RE: Debunking the Paleo diet
Yet another diet discussion where nobody can agree on something as fundamental as what humans should be eating. Fuck.

It's at the point where it seems like you got to do a doctorate's worth of research on nutrition and biology to be qualified to open your refrigerator. And once you have your e-PhD in foodology, you can't help but write a book or blog about it, contributing yet another conflicting diet ideology to the whirling clusterfuck of confusion, and leaving poor layman boobs like myself to gnaw on boiled leather for fear of anything else fucking up my "insulin resistance", giving me "metabolic syndrome", being riddled with "anti-nutrients", wiping out my "good" gut flora, taking me out of (or putting me too far into) "ketosis", ruining my skin, dropping my testosterone, aging me prematurely, giving me manboobs, making my heart explode, or being miracle-grow for cancer.

Fuck, I'm hungry. I think I'll roll the dice and go eat a banana. Hope I don't collapse from surprise-diabetes and die.

RE: Debunking the Paleo diet
@Rah, that's exactly why physicians usually won't recommend any specific diets, be it Paleo, Atkins, low carb etc... there is simply no concluding evidence that these extreme diets are beneficial even though diet gurus claim otherwise and laugh all the way to the bank selling their seminars, workshops, books, dvds, oils and what not.

Just watched a documentary on supercentenarians, i.e. people of 110 years and older in small Italian villages. They eat a plant based diet, vegetable oils and hardly any meat.

So you might wanna think twice before eating that rib eye steak every day for lunch for the next 30+ years because your ancestors allegedly did so or throwing large chunks of butter in your coffee every day, lol. The final verdict is still out.

Diet is actually super easy.

Just go Ketosis or bust.

RE: Debunking the Paleo diet
I like the high-protein low-carb diet known as paleo.

But that's because I followed Paleoplan.com. Paid for weekly menus and shopping lists, saved me a shitload of planning and I ate a varied diet with some pretty interesting recipes. Others less so. I don't give fuck what you call it. The ingredients were varied, the menus simple, and the food tasty.

Lost about 2lbs of fat every three weeks and retained my muscle mass (I did crossfit 3x a week at the same time).

That's better than 99% of fatsos out there. I will definitely be doing it again in the future.

RE: Debunking the Paleo diet
I have the best diet ever known to man. It's called 'eat what makes you feel your best'.

When you eat food ask your self how you feel ten minutes after the meal, thirty minutes after the meal, an hour after the meal and so on. If you feel like shit, that's a great indicator that your diet is shit. If you feel good and look good dont fuck with what works. It's really simple.

A lot of people's problem is stress. They stress what they eat. They stress what they wear. They stress what they say. I don't care how good you eat or how well you dress, if you're stressed you're going backwards. Stress kills. Stop worrying so much. Some of the most jacked guys I know eat sour patched kids and McDonald's everyday. They just don't give a fuck and no one can tell them nothing and they go hard as fuck in the gym.

If that is the litmus test, I would only eat E-tabs.

Haha! Me too.

I'm not the type that can get away with eating candy and McDonald's. I'd rather eat right and not be a slave to the gym. To each his own though. Whole point is if paleo works for you why change it? I've done strict paleo and after a month I was getting dizzy as fuck all the time. Had to start eating rice and beans and healthy carbs more.

If I'm chilling with an Italian broad and she brings me some of her grandmas homemade pizza I'm not gonna be like, "nah I'm paleo." I'm going to destroy that pizza than that pussy.

Check out PlantPositive on YouTube. Full disclosure: He is vegan, but he destroys the like of Gary Taubes, Loren Cordain and other paleo promoters. Highly recommended for anyone. The dude has ~100 videos, spelling out everything wrong with the paleo diet.

What to you is his single best argument against paleo? Give me a genuine chink in the armour here.

IF you tolerate rice and potatoes well you could try Perfect Health Diet. I think this is even better in the long run.

Hey, sorry for the late reply. Hmm, I personally think I would do a disservice to PlantPositive if I tried to summarize his argument or just provide the single best argument. I would highly recommend watching at least the first 5-6 videos of his Primitive Nutrition videos. Those videos by themselves debunk the scientific arguments for the Paleo Diet (i.e. it's what we're suppose to eat etc.). It also seems Gary Taubes is big in the paleo community, PlantPositive goes on a full attack on Taubes' 'Good Calories Bad Calories' book. Definitely worth checking out his first few videos on Gary Taubes.

That being said, correct me if I'm wrong, but the paleo diet seems to have two main arguments:
1. It's the diet our ancestors ate and thus something we should eat as well.
2. It is a healthy diet

In a bit over 60 videos (around ~10 hours worth of information), he debunks both claims. He argues extremely well for example that humans have been eating grains (wild version though) far longer than for the time we've been sedentary. He also has other arguments, although I admit it's been over a year since I watched the videos, so I don't remember them all.

The second claim (paleo diet = healthy diet) he completely destroys. He goes through Loren Cordain, Taubes, Minger, etc etc and demonstrates that animal products are indeed unhealthy for you in the long run, why cholesterol is bad for you. Furthermore, he debunks Weston Price's theory and he also demonstrates why people such as the Masai can live off a very large percentage of animal products (hint: they don't eat much, so 50% animal fat diet where you only get 800 calories can't implied a 50% animal fat diet consisting of 3000 calories per day is healthy).

Disclaimer: I haven't actually fact checked everything he says. Though can anyone really? How many people really have the time to go through the hundreds of scientific papers experts cite? Ironically though, that's exactly what PlantPositive does. He finds all the papers Cordain, Taubes etc cite and demonstrates why these authors are misrepresenting the facts and/or cherry picking studies to suit their needs. He shows the papers in his videos, highlighting parts that the Paleo authors conveniently leave out. I can't say the same of Cordain or Taubes, so for that reason I trust PlantPositive's videos far more than I trust any Paleo author/expert.

the only basic rule for the paleo diet is varied, natural, mostly unprocessed food. be it plants or animals(their diet has to be natural too).
you can do high carb, low carb, high fat, high protein whatever paleo diet.

Is that really true? I only ask because I've read a lot of paleo people hate on grains and starchy foods. Perhaps I'm mistaken or perhaps the paleo diet has evolved to include many different diets, but I was under the impression the key elements of the paleo diet are:
- a lot of meat, dairy and eggs
- nuts and non-starchy vegetables, fruits should be included
- no starchy vegetables or grains

I am certain our ancestors digged up starchy tubers (sweet potatoes), because they could and they provide calories. Grains have some defense mechanisms that are not very friendly to your body and Gluten can be a problem. Personally, I avoid grains and dairy when I can, they fuck me up. Dairy products are somehow allowed by some paleo gurus, but to me drinking milk from another species is not very "natural". Potatoes and parboiled rice is not "absolute paleo", because my ancestors most likely did not eat them, but are fine as a relatively clean carb source for me.

a) ditch almost all processed junk food
b) identify foods you cant tolerate or specific intolerances

Dunno, the Roman army survived on grain and wine, they did pretty fucking fine I'd say.

Ancient grains are different than the modern species. They doubled or triple the chromosomes of wheat in the 1950s to make it grow smaller and faster. They also up to recently would soak and sprout the grains as well. Grains always did take a lot of work to make into edible foods, so you didn't eat as huge of quantities as you do now.

RE: Debunking the Paleo diet
The video title is flame-bait and irritating. She is contending simply that it shouldn't be called the "Paleo Diet" from an anthropological viewpoint. That's fine. People are taking it to mean the diet itself is bullshit, which is the farthest thing from the truth.

Paleo basically minimizes grains, legumes, and pasteurized dairy (all considered inflammatory), and puts emphasis on organic meats, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and starches. I don't know where the "potatoes and sweet potatoes aren't Paleo" thing came from. French fries sure as hell aren't Paleo, but good luck achieving any kind of athletic performance without some starchy carbs to replenish your glycogen stores. John Welbourne does a good job of cutting the BS and making it pretty simple (though he does allow for more dairy than Wolf does but that's because he's trying to build football players).

The biggest problem in nutrition today is the misconception that you need "balance" in your diet. You don't. You need to cycle your diet based on your work output. Heavy squat day? Carb up after, preferably with something other than refined grains. Rest day? Ultra-low carb. The idea that 30-40% of your daily calories should be carbohydrates regardless of your work output is just moronic.

Kiefer actually wrote a good piece on this recently.

As I am not constantly in Ketosis due to carbs in my diet, I can't really workout in a "fasted" state. If I then make 3x10 squats as my last exercise, I feel dizzy and almost ready to puke due to extremely low glycogen/blood sugar levels.

RE: Debunking the Paleo diet
Really, the paleo diet seems like a religion of ancestor-worship sometimes.

If something is healthy, it doesn't matter if it has the blessing of our ancestors having eaten it. Just eat it.

Eating tons of vegetables and all natural meats sure is a lot healthier for you than the Standard American Diet. So who cares if our ancestors ate it or not?

Chickens, Cows, Pigs, Sheep and Goats weren't eaten by the ancestors of people outside of Eurasia. Doesn't mean that they should be avoided by Native Americans.

Tomatoes weren't eaten by the ancestors of people outside the Americas. Doesn't mean Italians should swear off tomatoes.

Of course, Mark's Daily Apple doesn't foreswear foods we didn't used to eat. Butter and protein powder definitely weren't on a caveman's menu. Yet he loves that shit.

Paleo is so over the top IMO but do whatever makes you happy.

For me, that includes pizza, tacos, pasta etc.
