Yeah, it really is due to a number of factors.

1) Puritan influence that our country was founded on (even though many of the founding fathers themselves completely disagreed with most religious ideals, John Adams was an atheist).

2) After they repealed prohibition, the federal government gave the power to regulate alcohol to the states. Keep in mind that prohibition came about because of huge populus movements. So, despite the rise in Al Capone types that came about because of prohibition, many of these populus movements lobbied their state legislatures to put strict laws on the books.

3) Modern times we owe the continuation of these policies to lobbying groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Fraternal Brotherhood of Police, etc.


Thinking about it, damn, being a bootlegger in 1920s would have been an awesome racket. I think I heard somewhere that bootlegging is how the Kennedy's made their money.

That is my understanding as well.

US cities are quite sprawled , so usually there won't be too many residents near a club , or are there?

I know that such a law also exists in UK, but given that they take their drinking culture to the extreme, it may be better so for their own health lol.

Although alot of things are quite regulated here of course, but far as I know there's no such law in Germany.
E.g. there's tons of clubs and bars here in Cologne in the city center, which is quite small although with a big population (16 km² / 130.000 inhabitants), and the rents still are one of the highest in Germany and the demand is very high. Many clubs have open almost everyday.

In addition to the previously mentioned, I think it also has to do with the increased cost of having to have more city personnel like police, firemen, paramedics, etc on the clock to ensure some kind of reasonable attention to public safety issues.

what's weird that I've found is that people still head out to go to the popular clubs at the SAME TIME REGARDLESS OF if last call is earlier or later.

i.e. beautiful people still only start crowdin the cool clubs at 11-11:30 whether you're in so shitty 1:30AM last call or some cool 4AM last call. you'd think at a 2 AM closing people would head out earlier...but no.

I tend to agree with guerilla on this one.

Southern California is 11-12 for nightclub crowd with closing time at 1:30.

Miami is 12 for nightclub crowd with closing at 5 am.

Not exact, but very similar start time, and very different end time.

The beauty of Miami is that from 5pm till 12am it is going off as well. Then from 12am to 5 am.

If you can't get it done in those hours, you aren't going to get it done.

Yeah, you may be right about that in SoCal. I think in CO people tend to go out earlier because it's rare to have after (or house) parties, at least where I am. It may be different in Denver. When I lived here a while back, I would work until 11 and wouldn't be able to get to town until 12 because of how the buses ran. I hated only having an hour and 45 min to party. Many people here though will start even earlier, around 8 or 9 at a restaurant bar, and then do their rounds at the places with the younger crowd around 10-11. It was pretty common for me and my main crew to head out at 1 am in Miami.

I went to school in Delaware, where bars close at a pitiful 1am and spawned a weird drinking culture. If you're under age, you go to house parties from 1030-2am, and if you're 21+ you go to the bars either from 5pm-til or 10pm-1am.

I moved from there to Baton Rouge (did not take advantage of LSU at all which was stupid), and then to New Orleans where I currently live.

If drinking until whenever is important to you, there is no substitute for NOLA. The laws for drinking are:

1) You can drink outside, wherever, whenever in the whole city, as long as it's not in a glass bottle (unless you're in a park or something then it's cool).

There's a unique term that Im not sure how I ever survived without: "to-go cup". Every bar, and every restaurant that has a bar which is most, has plastic cups either at the bar or near the door so if you have a good raft beer or anything in a glass, you just dump it in a to-go cup or ask or one at the bar, and you do the most liberating thing in the world. You walk out and leave with your drink.

On a sunny day, you can get a daiquiri (not just traditional, if you're from the south you know they have in excess of 20 flavors, it's more like an alcohol slushy delivery system than anything). They actually have special driving rules for daqs because we have drive-thru daiquiri shops. No that wasn't a typo.

2) Many bars close when all the customers are gone, whenever they feel like it, never, or 2am at the earliest on weekdays at weakbars.

3) Not really a law, but there aren't very many liquor stores. Reason being there are 1300 in greater NOLA, plus they sell any kind of alcohol at most gas stations and all grocery stores.

4) Again not a law, but it's easy to find cheap drinks. There are a lot of separate spots for bars, but unless you're in a hotel bar or on bourbon you're not paying more than $5 for a beer or well. If you drink high life, $2 is standard.

5) Again not a law, but because there are so many bars, except for near Tulane/Loyola there aren't many house parties. Why fuck up your house and spend a ton of money when you don't have to? I've been to over 100 bars in the two years I've lived here, and I discover new ones on the regular.

In retrospect, NOLA drinking scene might need a separate post.

Bottom line: alcohol is everywhere and you can drink anywhere any time at any price point and tier and everyone drinks.

Nice solid list, good info

I'll add that most casino clubs in Atlantic City close at 4, but security tries to start pushing people out by 3:30. (Mixx and Anthem stay open later I know)

Drinks are flowing all the time on the casino floors though, except for like 1 hour (5am or 6am I think) when things close down for a quick cleanup

Baton Rouge: it is a HUGE college town, so if that is your scene you'll be in heaven (45,000 students at LSU). If you're looking for something classier, the downtown sucks and should be avoided like the plague. It's a capital city, so think DC but much smaller.

Drinking goes until 2am, and unless it's a tailgating day you can't drink in public. I spent most of my weekends in NOLA for this reason, an easy 1 hr drive that on the way back you can get off at HWY 30 so you don't hit all the cops coming in to BR.

Downtown

Avoid on weekdays, it's completely empty. On weekends it's yuppies but aggressive because it's the South, which just means many of the girls are married and there with their husbands/fiance's and large groups. Singles scene downtown is shitty. The hottest girls will be the bartenders, so if you're able to get them they are your best bet, although they probably go to LSU so you may be better off just staying away entirely. In any case it's where I spent the majority of my drinking time, which in retrospect was extremely stupid but I was a bitch who just hung out with friends so whatever.

LOFT WINE BAR: Sushi, expensive, lounge atmosphere. Balcony you can walk around outside and see Mississippi River, really nice view. Wouldn't recommend picking up there, but a solid date spot for light dinner and drinks.

M BAR: Club atmosphere, deck outside overlooks river. Not huge, but expensive. Girls are usually pretty hot, has a dress code. Wannabe LA people here. Brought girls here instead of met them there, typical club game. Has a dance floor, wraparound bar. Not terrible, not great.

PUNCHER'S SPORTS BAR: Typical sports bar, not worth mentioning.

RED STAR BAR: Really fun dive bar, has karaoke and probably only place with reliably single girls, although they are usually hipsters so that's according to taste.

600 MAIN: Good salsa bar, sexy latinas and other non-caucasians that can dance are here, so if you can dance this is where you should be. Dress well and get ready to shove out some 60 year old latino and black men pseudo-dancing with young idiots.

HAPPY'S: Typical Irish pub but with bartenders/waitresses dressed in short skirts and sports bras. Hit on them I guess? Never had success but who knows.

TIGER LAND

Just off of Nicholson on Bob Pettit Dr, if you're into drunk underage college girls this is where it's at. I didn't spend NEARLY enough time there. I lived less than 100 yards from the four bars (didn't bother learning their names, they get shut down and reopened for underage drinking pretty often), probably one of the biggest opportunities I've ever wasted.

Tiger Land bars are the kind of bars that the floors are black, although it's probably from dirt, alcohol and vomit in lieu of actual paint. There are frequently parking lots closed off for overflow tents, and on tailgating days it's easy to walk down to the stadium. They are shitty college apartments, but Tiger Plaza is where you want to live if your goal is bouncing them straight from the bars.

Other bars include:

SPANISH MOON- solid spot, pulled a couple of times. In the hood, so don't leave your car overnight. Usually around $10 cover. Themed nights pretty often, great dance floor, sometimes live music, and upstairs bar that looks down on the dancing. If you're looking for an easy place to hook up, check it out. Only problem is bouncing because it's nowhere near anything, but that's the problem with most of LSU bars so if someone figures out a way around this let me know (because I'm curious, not because I'll ever go back to living there).

THE BULLDOG: Similar crowd to the two Bulldogs in NOLA, mostly yuppies a year or two out of school. Good bar food, lots of kinds of beer, and some single women.

I-10 OVERPASS @ PERKINS RD: Underneath the overpass there are a handful of bars. Ivar's, some martini bar, Chelsea's is decent for food and music I guess. Pretty chill spot.

HIGHLAND + STATE ST

THE CHIMES, and a couple other bars around the corner. They have decent food, but never really hung out around there at night.

There are some decent gay bars if you're into butch femme/slutty bi girls. CAJUN COVE is one, I just go with some gay dudes and they play defense while I hit on their straight friends. SPLASH is a dance club with all that implies. Pretty tight knit gay scene, so if you're in you're good. Also one on the way to downtown, just ask a gay dude and he'll give you a rundown of the different spots.

I know there are a couple awesome streets to live on close to campus, but I didn't go to school there so I have no idea what they were. Halloween I almost got in a threesome by accident but I was too fucked up on Four Loko to pull the trigger. I was mostly hooking up with this smoking hot piece of trailer trash from Denham Springs and a thick black phlebotomist from Gonzales that asked me out after she took my blood. Also my tiny asian roommate one time.

There are some other places, but they are even more isolated in terms and even harder to pull directly from because everyone has to drive there.

As far as spitting game during the day, the campus is enormous and provides plenty of opportunities. No reason to go anywhere else.
