I'm gonna go on a limb and say this isn't about him being alpha or having other girls on tap.

I feel like date lab is suppose to try to develop relationships with a little more meaning.

I'm gonna be like the woman and use race to justify myself.
most Asians I know have a strong work ethic.. or at least the ethic is drilled by the parents.

this girl is in her thirties and still trying to finish grad school.
like said above. no one wants to pick up a girl that is that old and still has no career.
she is a liability to a person that's already got some form of establishment and value.

at that age. you need to bring more to the table than good looks

To be completely fair to her, she is a classically-trained opera singer, which, while perhaps not being extremely lucrative, is a respectable accomplishment, especially for a woman, who might be expected, traditionally, to do something artsy instead of a career, if she didn't get married ASAP. She probably went to school as a music major, dallied around with opera for a few years until she realized that her life was going nowhere and she was most likely not going to become a broadway star, and then went back to school to study something much more practical, which she happened to enjoy.

From the sound of it, she likely bored him to tears talking about viruses and intracellular structures, and he thought to himself "she's pretty, but not pretty enough to justify putting up with this every time I want to hit it. Next!"

I was banging a girl who's close friend sang opera. If you could pick any profession where you'd expect people to be more cultured, this would be it. Yet this girl was a pretty typical American girl. It's always been true of America more than the Continent, and now more than ever, that high culture is extremely weak to non-existent. If you didn't know better, you might think that somewhere there is an upper class that is more educated and interested in these things, but there really isn't. It's a little startling how people can be so compartmentalized, to be involved with something like opera yet otherwise be so common.

Showing up late (though she did too), totally left-turning her frame, demonstrating the right type of value, short answers, letting her do most of the talking and of course, rating the date lower than she did...first-date generalship right there, all the best Asian players I know are aloof and low key like Zhibo. I guarantee he is, did, can or is going to shoot her a text message for a more discreet setting that she will jump on.

Datelab goes out of their way to set up people who are the exact same age, when they should aim for the natural cushion that occurs in nature (men older by 2-7 years), but of course, they're idiots. If he was 37 or she was 24, I guarantee things would have gone much differently.

Good take. I know a lot of guys think every girl over 30 is damaged goods, but I've met a few cool older broads.

The girl seemed quality. If I were 42-44 and looking to settle down with an educated girl so I could have status-climbing offspring, I'd be into her.

My guess: You don't get called into Date Lab right away. In some of the Date Lab's, the people got called a year after putting in an application.

It's likely he was seeing a girl somewhat "seriously," but not exclusively. When he got the Date Lab call, he told her was going to do it rather than miss out.

After the Lab, his girl put him on lockdown so he can't date around.
