Yeah, if a haircut is a major financial decision, there are probably more important things that need to be focused on.

The other day I cut my hair myself for the first time with a small body hair shaver. Wouldn't recommend it or do it again. Have always wanted to cut my hair myself at least once but it won't be an ongoing thing especially since Estonia and cheap prices are on the horizon.

I got this mirror and it's awesome!

http://www.selfcutsystem.com/

Only thing is it's kind of expensive for what it is, I'm sure it costs $8 landed cost to the USA. When I got mine it was a bit dinged up and dented so I sent them photos and they refunded me $30!

It allows you to see every angle easily, anywhere!

Much easier to cut hair now since you hang it on any door and can adjust the height to yours. It folds into a thick laptop size and I travel with it now too so can cut my hair anywhere. I even found an old school laptop case that fits it perfectly. I can't live without it now either!

I've gotten so good at cutting hair I now do friends and family too at home!

RE: Guys, stop paying someone to cut your hair!
I was doing this for a long time - giving myself a fade. There is a learning curve for anything more complicated than a buzz, especially when you get to the back, but I figured it out and actually got lots of compliments.

One thing that annoys me about barbers is that it's so often a roll of the dice when I go into a new place. Not sure why, but they're excellent at fucking up a simple short haircut. And since I'm always on the move, it's hard to stick with a good one when I find them.

It's also a matter of convenience. One of my pet peeves is waiting in line at the barber, and I'm shit at planning ahead so appointments don't really work for me. Because of that, I often put off my haircut to where it starts looking shitty by the time I go in.

I mostly stopped because I hate cleaning up the hair afterwards. It's especially a bitch in hotels where I don't have cleaning supplies on hand.

I agree with the argument against doing it for budget reasons though. Focus on making money if you're concerned about such a small expense. I guess that's easy for me to say since a cut is only $1.25 where I'm at right now, but still...

Another kudos to gay male barbers being the shit at cutting hair, by the way. If there's a gay guy in the joint, I always get him to do my cut.

Beyond All Seas

To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes
frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." - Kipling

i get my hair cut every two weeks at $45 per.

compliments abound. fashion forward and kept tight. the idea of cutting my own hair no matter how adept i might be seems absurd. you need a stylist to keep you styled.

I get my head shaved once a year.

If I buy a set of hair clippers - is this the sort of thing which is easy to do yourself?

Or will I keep missing a bit - and end up with an uneven finish?

I used to cut my own hair and ended up looking quite thuggish. Earlier this year, I started visiting a traditional barber who cuts my hair for $15. (Yes, he's traditional, not a Gay stylist)

Worth every penny. I advise every other forum member to do this as well. It makes a real difference in the way people look at you.

I went the other way as well. Used to cut my own hair, then grew it out with stylist, now shorter with stylist.

$30 with tip (you could get it less, but I've known the girl for years, so I'm willing to pay her well) ever 6 weeks. That's about $250 per year. And I look fan-fuckin-tastic...worth it. It makes a huge difference in how I look.

To compare, I spend about $250 on alcohol/bars every 2 weeks.

RE: Guys, stop paying someone to cut your hair!
For the past year or so I was basically shaving my head and doing it myself. It was a big money savings. Assuming your a guy with shorter hair you need a haircut every 6 weeks at most if you want to really stay looking crisp and sharp every 3-4 weeks. Even a discount haircut for like $15 bucks it adds up over the course of a year. I pesonally see no value in going to these $50 for a mens haircut places unless you have long hair or some unique style hair.

If I do pay for a haircut I'm going to a great clips or lady janes or something for $12 to $15. Anyhow, I was shaving my head for the past year, saving some money plus I can do it myself once or twice a week and always have it looking fresh and doesn't cost me anything. Recently however decided to grow it out a bit and go get a haircut, went to lady janes and got a pretty good cut for $12.

I'm totally in agreement with cutting your own hair if your gonna go short for a while. If its anything more than a buzz I'll pay for it. You don't have to go to some high priced salon, just try out a few cheaper places until you find a stylist who does a good job on your hair and then keep going back to them.

If you shave your head or get a buzz cut/military style, there's no reason to go to a barber shop.

If you allow a cheap Supercuts girl to buzz you and then do 30 seconds of scissor work, you should be doing it yourself.

However, I have a full head of hair that I like to keep clean. I like keeping my fade tight as well. I have a barber shop on lock that's $20 for everything including a great beard trim. I go once a month. $240 a year? No problem.

It's also good to go shoot the shit. Barber shops (with licensed barbers) are a remaining pillar of masculinity, one of the few places that women haven't completely invaded. The barber license process is much more rigorous than hair stylist or beautician, so a true barber will have much more experience. In Louisiana, an apprentice is required to log 4000 hours before getting his license. Support your barbers.

I was never very satisfied with how my hair looked when getting McBarber's to cut it. So I started doing it myself. I love the way it looks. I spend about 45 minutes cutting everything tight and even. It's important that you do it right and really spend time on the back and the hard-to-reach places. Otherwise yeah, just get a stylist to do that good job for you if you can't do it.

That said, I get complimented on my hair all the time. People are surprised that I do it myself. It took me a couple tries to get it right.

About 22mm or 25mm is a good length for guys, once a month. I don't know what a stylist would do differently for my hair type, kind of curly unless I cut it regularly.

That said, some guys have hair that may be less amenable to a straight up buzz of 22mm or 25mm, so I can see them going to a stylist.

Fortunate enough where my head shape is perfect for a baldy. Used to rock a low ceasar cut

Had a favorite barber I would enjoy dropping in on for the atmosphere/jokes/game, plus I was the only customer who went with the clean shaved look.

That was nearly 15 years back, still miss the camraderie but I shave myself with a triple-blade nowadays

15 minutes tops

Use a hot towel and alcohol to soothe my head from any possible "nicks"

Viola! Shiny baldy look - The Ultimate masculine look

*Ladies love the touch it

Ya know I'm all for being economical in areas of life that are unimportant.

Sometimes though, you just gotta spend a few coins!

Unless you have a shaven/clipped style, it's just ridiculous to skimp on something that women value so highly.

My friends laugh at me for spending £50 ($80) every 4-6 weeks getting a cut but it makes you feel great; far better than an equivalent spend elsewhere imho.

I used to do this, shaving my head about once a year.

I always missed something, which is why I learned the hard way to not shave just once, but rather to shave 2 or maybe even 3 days in a row. For example, I'd shave Friday night, shower then sleep, wake up in the morning and shave my head again, then Sunday morning shave my hair again.

By the third shave I usually managed to get everything and if I did miss something it wasn't immediately obvious, and I'd be good for another year.
