Since this is the active thread on Japan, I'll also ask my question in here: what's the cheapest way to get 3G on your phone. Apparently you can't just buy a pre-paid SIM card in Japan. I has to be registered and it comes at a cost of 25 dollars just for the registration alone. I will be here for about 2 weeks so I'm trying to avoid it. My wifi on my phone is busted so I can't use public wifi and I need 3G. Sucks, any info appriciated.

you should be ok, I never see guys hitting on girls at starbucks. Anywhere besides the street in 100x better. If you do street be prepared to put in some work. These dudes approach anywhere from 20 - 50 girls a day. And they love to keep track of their stats by using a number counter (not sure why). If they are a host I think they have to show how much work they do each day. guys who write on their nanpa blog also like to show how much they did that day.

@TravelHardcore. You can't get a phone anymore. They said foreigners were using easily accessible phones to commit crimes (?) and they made it super strict. You must have 2 forms of identification and a visa valid for the term of the contract... There are ways around this, but you'd be better off renting a SIM card. You can typically order online and have it waiting for you at the airport. It's not cheap (15 bucks a day if I recall correctly), but it's fast and you can tether your laptop and everything.

East Asians think foreigners rape and rob people left and right. It would be nice to have tit-for-tat reciprocal treatments.

Brazil does that in regards to visas.

Have you looked at b-mobile? 14 day unlimited data prepaid SIM card for 4000 yen.

I wouldn't worry about that. There aren't enough foreigners in Japan for that to be a significant concern, not to mention those who read game blogs.

I've seen it happen before. A (local) guy sat down near a girl who was next to me, preening, checking himself, fidgeting and eyeballing the fuck out of her. She got up to leave around the same time as me. Behind me on the escalator, I heard him mumble something in her ear. Didn't get far though.

A couple months before, I opened a girl at Starbucks by asking where a club was whose name someone had texted me. Most of the approaches I've seen were always the creepy old salary men.

At the bookstore they love to stand next to the pretty ladies and pretend there looking at novels conviently next to the girl . They are usually no threat and harmless.

Not really worried, just kind of poking fun at you guys (I see I forgot to use the adjective "tall" before to describe foreigners), because you say you are tall and Skoch is even taller. I think you guys would stand out, especially in Osaka which doesn't see as many Westerners as Tokyo. I don't happen to be that tall.

hey man, Im sorry to say but the Japanese are assholes when it comes to things like this. The general attitude seems to be 'bring lots of money, tour our charming country and GTFO'.

Even for the locals a lot of the plans are either voice OR data. No dice having both. Much like Canadians, they just take it.
Sometimes they rent you this little widget that gives you wifi but you have to plug it in into your phone. Its totally unnecesary, and therefore very japanese in a way.

And good luck finding someone who can unlock a phone or clip a SIM card for an iphone, unless you dig in Akibahara and maybe if the star align and you find someone that speaks english... it just doesnt happen easily, I have tried a lot.

So I second others advice to rent a number a suck it up, or else you will be incommunicado.

As Soma already mentioned, b-mobile is your best choice and even that is a pain in the ass to get, as they active it when they ship the SIM, your hotel might not accept it, getting it at their airport post office doesn't work when your flight is late etc. etc.

You can also buy a b-mobile SIM locally, however you need a local mobile number to activate it and few japanese people will do that for you, as they're all paranoid that it might get back to them if you do anything criminal.

If you just need voice, you can rent a SIM from Softbank but it's only for iPhones for some reason.

I feel your pain Sargon.

I went to Osaka for a month a few years ago, after having been to Tokyo before and it's just not a great place to pick up for foreigners.

The whole vibe in the city is very low class and blue colar, with the only foreigners having real game there being black guys.

Most clubs were hip hop clubs when I was there and all others aside from Triangle tended to be dead / saussage fests. Pure is the most popular pick up joint for foreigners but the place is about as low class as it gets, with an occasional gem and just not worth going to.

I can count the number of english speaking girls I met there on one hand, so fluent japanese is absolutely necessary.

Some locations you could try for pick ups are the large Mc Donalds in Amemura, which is near Shinsaibashi station and Tsutaya Ebisubashi, which is at the bridge with the glico guy near nanba station.

At the Mc Donalds at all times of the days there are single girls around just reading manga or doing school work (obviously make a good judgement regarding the underage status ) and you'll find groups as well. Just sit down, chat them up and see how they respond.

At the Tsutaya they have american series on DVD, which is the right place to chat up girls about them.

Tokyo is a whole other world btw. and you should really head to Roppongi. If you're too broke for the Shinkansen, you can go by bus. Willer Express charges about 5500 Yen roundtrip.

Newb here nice to meet you all. The great white Myth rears its ugly head once again in Japan, I lived in Japan and I'm a brown guy, I got more tail then my white brothers. Actually when I would ask Japanese girls what do they prefer lots of them said they like black guys because of black American culture in the media they think that shit is cool. In the end you have to give Asian women more credit now a days they are smarter and way more open minded then you think.

With that said Japanese women are a delight! They are polite, and respectful when you talk to them unlike the women in Toronto and yes I'm from Toronto.

Point of contrast:

Osaka: Stayed for 4 days and not even a makeout. I approached in street, bar and clubs (when they were actually open...sigh) and had no luck at all. Got a few numbers from flakey girls that went nowhere. This was especially annoying considering we were staying in a nice hotel suite that my friend hooked me up with. What a waste!

Tokyo (where I live): During my summer break last month I banged 5 new girls in 8 days (2 club SNL's, 1 club D1, 2 bar D1's). Not trying to brag here but...yeah, Tokyo is a different animal.

Anyway, keep up the reports! Props for the honesty.

P.S If you want to experience some decent nightlife sometime I'd be happy to show you around Tokyo.

Was already crappy when I was there, when clubs were still closing at 5 or 6am. Just not a good city for foreigners. Kobe and Kyoto aren't great either, with foreigners, aside from english teachers and black guys that game hard all day, getting little love there.

I'm still here, just been lying low for the time being, partially because I am BROKE AS FUCK, but also because a break has done me good. Went on about three dates recently: one with the Taiwanese girl I met in Kyoto, another with the Chinese girl from before and another with a 19 year old J-girl, the last two are most likely still in the works, but I'll wait until next payday til I start gaming seriously again. As far as "Don't Bang Osaka": I wouldn't want to hate on a place just because I have trouble getting laid there, though I have been tempted.

I'm also still somewhat confused as to how much my getting blueballed here have been due to my own mistakes (or just vibing badly with the locals) and how much of it is due to the city/region itself. I've still never been to Tokyo, so I have no comparisson.

I'm pretty sure race and looks can be ruled out as having negative influences on my success here, as I've seen average-looking white, black and other foreign guys with local women here (though only rarely do I see them with really attractive women). As far as looks, I may be no underwear model, but I definitely would not consider myself bad-looking, and I was told that physically, I'm actually the type women in this country would normally go for. Of course there are probably still some changes I can make in my overall style and how I present myself, but I still can't see either o these as being major causes for getting blueballed.

Whether it's due to game and overall skill is a trickier question: I've never been James Bond when it comes to pulling, but I wouldn't say I'm an absolute chump either. I've already gone into my average success rates in other countries, so it's unlikely that I'm falling flat merely because I'm a chump who just can't get laid. However, it looks like others here -- such as Skotch and IP -- have been able to get laid in Osaka with relative consistency, so it seems to work at least for some guys here. My only conclusion as of yet is that Osaka can be a Toronto for some guys and SEA for others. But I've still got other avenues to exploit, so late September and early October will be interesting.

A long overdue update. Did my first approaches during the past few days after nearly a month long hybernation due to being broke as fuck.

At Starbucks:
Headed off to Umeda for an international party at Owl, which was scheduled to start at 18:00. Sat down at a Starbucks near Kitashinchi and opened my laptop. The place is always filled to the brim with suits and briefcases, not exactly my crowd, but what the hell. After about thirty or so minutes, a woman in her mid twenties sits down next to me in a blue trenchcoat, beige scarf and her hair tied back in a pony tail. She's thin and has an average face; I'd give her a 6. Just for the hell of it, I whip out my phone, rummage through old messages and open, by asking for the reading of a particular kanji. She explains it pretty good English, much better than the average Japanese. I ask her if she's been to an English speaking country. She says she lived and Canada and England for a while. A conversation proceeds from there for about twenty minutes, I'd say. Eventually we switch to mostly English. Before I get ready to leave I suggest exchanging numbers. She leaves her Facebook instead. Fine by me.

At Owl:
It takes me forever to find Owl, because no one seems to know where it is. Eventually I find the place and walk inside. Not bad. It has a similar atmosphere to Giraffe. Due to the Whynot event there are gaikokujin everywhere. Basically about 40% foreign guys, 40% Japanese girls, 8% J-guys and 2% foreign Girls. Not bad ratios. Looking around, I'm reminded of a simple fact: most foreign guys in Japan dress like absolute losers. Japanese guys may be more feminine, but in terms of overall style, they've got us beat.

Since I haven't been to a club in what feels like ages, I warm up by chatting with foreign guys. I spot a Japanese girl standing by herself in the corner: slightly unattractive. I'd give her a 5.5, but after over two months of drought, I care more about ease than anything else. We Chat for about half an hour. She's an English teacher going on 38. We go for another drink and sit down on the couch, where I start escalating. She starts saying I'm too young for her, however, saying she's old enough to be my mother (at 37, she'd have to have been 12 when she had me, if that's the case). She starts suggesting that I go over and hit on the other Girls, so I take a hint and go back to the bar.

I approach a younger girl, who upon closer inspection, looks a bit...too young. Seriously, if I didn't know better, she could literally pass as eleven. Despite the typical Japanese faux cuteness, you can tell by the way she talks that she's probably in her early 20s, so I continue anyway. Not much interest from that one, so I bail when her friend walks up looking like she's ready to cockblock. There are quite a few open prospects around here, and it looks like a pretty good hunting ground, only the staff walks up to me, Points at my shoes and holds up a sign reading "Our establishment has a strict dress code. As your attire does not fit that dress code we regret that we will have to ask you to leave the premises immediately." Shit. I knew my shoes looked like shit, but normally they can't even be seen in the dark especially on the dancefloor. From here, I head off to Bar One in Shinsaibashi.

At Bar One:
Inside, there's a facepainting gimmick going on, where you can get your face painted for free (same thing at Owl, only I'd passed up there). I walk up and ask the woman which design she recommends, so she paints some tribal pattern on the right side of my face. I'd made friends with two groups of Americans upon walking in, so I proceed to sit beside one of them and chat a bit. There are two cute J-girls at the table next to us, whom we approach together. One of the girl's name is Maya.

I take her to the dancefloor and we make out for about three hours while her friend goes off to do...something. We're practically fucking through our clothes on the dancefloor: kissing, biting, groping, licking and whatnot. My buddy has no such luck, however. To the outside, it would seem like we're moments away from going off to some dark corner to fuck. Still, she won't leave with me and won't cough up the number. We make out some more until she decidess to leave with her friend. One last attempt to get contact info. Nothing.

I make two more attempts, but can't get anything popping. Leave at about 5:00 in the morning.

Today, Tuesday 1st October, 2013

About two and a half hours ago at the Starbucks in front of Hikkake-Bashi (where I'm typing this at the moment), I open a girl sitting next to me with the old "kanji-on-my-phone-opener." Can't get much started from there, but reopen when I ask her what language it is she's studying (she's writing vocabulary and has one of those electronic dictionaries, but I can't see the script well enough).
"英語/English" she answers.
We chat for about twenty minutes. She seems very interested and asks me for my name, where I'm from, etc. Pretty engaging body language, though I know by now not to think that means anything when it comes from a Japanese. Nice face and body. I'd give her a 7 in my book. When she gets a call from her friend waiting outside, I suggest exchanging contact info. Email first, then decide it's easier if we exchange numbers. As is typical of Japanese girls, she gets hesitant, but gives me it anyway. A common sign that she'll flake. We bid eachother farewell.

So far that makes...

You are right. Seems like you are pretty well adjusted to the girls here.

Why are you asking for phone numbers though? Japanese girls hardly even use the phone function now anyway unless it is their mum calling them to ask where they are LOL. Plus they probably have bad experience of some asshole stalker that called them 100 times and forced them to change their number.

I ask for LINE info these days. I don't even like LINE but it's less hassle and I get less resistance. No Facebook anymore because I don't like the shit storm of drama it can produce further along the line.
