RE: Starbucks drink of choice
I got dragged into a Starbucks a couple weeks ago. It sucked. People acted pretentious, they fucked up my order of regular black, which was a shot of expresso with hot water added. People were talking loud and looking around to see who was listening to them.

So I made my chick pay for her own as punishment, and we went outside to smoke. There were signs all over the patio bragging how Starfucks was a complete smoke free facility. There so PC you can't even smoke outside?

And yes, real men drink regular black coffee. Us real men drink it to wake the fuck up, b/c we're on our way to a 12 hr day. And when we get off work, we go to the bar and drink alcohol, not a mochafaggafemipussylatte.

When you work a job that requires physical labor, you don't need a gym.

See, this guy is getting paid big union bucks to "pump iron" on the clock. How can it get any better than that?

The guy has a beer gut, but let him go toe-to-toe with a gym monkey of the same weight class. The ironworker would win. There is a big difference between "old man" strength and what you get on the bench press.

None anywhere close to where I lived. The closest one is Sunset and Eastern, but even that is a 15 minute drive.

I get my coffee from a burger van parked across the road behind school. 60 pence versus some extortionate bullshit price in a big chain brand. Unless it's really high quality, coffee is coffee.

Anyone take a flask with them?

Chocolate banana smoothie with 2 or 3 shots of espresso. Feel like a million bucks afterwards.

I can't really drink milk, so I just get some tea, or just a regular coffee. I use starbucks to do work. I choose my starbucks and sit usually at the long table if they have one, do my work, and any hotties that sit on the table, I eventually chat up.

It really doesn't matter what you drink to be honest, the tea is usually the cheapest, and has the least caffeine so I just get that.

The key is to find a starbucks in a high traffic area (i.e. tourist trap) and that has the right set up. Usually in tourist trap type places, there'll be a few in close prox to each other. just walk in and usually instantly you'll know if its a good place or not. Did this all the time in Tokyo, got myself Suited and booted, found a cafe in which it was 99% women (there's a few in Shibuya) and picked the same day, time and the same spot to do work over a few weeks, and after people got use to seeing me, opening hotties sitting next to me would be pretty easy. A lot of times I would get opened by them too, telling me "I see you around here a lot etc etc." A bit different in the states, as you don't need to wear a suit for one, just chill, do some work and chat up the hotties that sit at the table. . .be sociable.

easiest game ever plus you get work done.

P.S. Hi guys, that's an example of a constructive helpful response, rather than bashing the op about the thread. Worrying if "this" or "that" is beta is pretty silly. If you're confident, and KNOW that you are going places. . .and are acting on that. . . .that's not beta.

Yeah, Starbucks is a good place to relax in Tokyo. It seems to attract more young women than the Japanese chains (although the Shibuya branches are too crowded for me). Koots is even better since you can get drinkable green tea but they've all been shutting down recently.

And agreed on the "beta" criticisms. It seems to be a subset of SWPL behavior where people choose their tastes based on what other people will think - "I'm too refined/manly to go to Starbucks so I drink coffee from a hidden gem/bum's ass". People need to lighten up and be more secure in their tastes. Yes, we all know Starbucks isn't the best. It also isn't the worst and is convenient when they are on every block (although I do think it is acceptable to ridicule people who drink the sugar-filled milkshake type drinks - those things look foul and are basically poison).

Something that concerns me is that a lot of the times the coffee is consistent in taste across a huge area.. How does that shit work? Perfect quality control? Kinda doubt that... Gotta be processed to some extent

Ha, I was at Mad House today. They have a location on Eastern, but I haven't been. The people who run Holley's are really cool ex-Cirque performers. Sambalatte is hit or miss - it's either so busy that you have to get it to go, or totally dead. The only time I've seen it remotely in-between the one girl who was worth approaching was surrounded by her five fatter friends.

I will have to look into Sunrise Coffee - it's not far from panevino, which is one of my favorite loungey bar spots. A friend knows the owner of Grouchy John's, too, so I should check it out as well. Pretty good info.

Las Vegas' coffee scene sucks compared to some places I've lived, but it's much better than I thought it would be.

Who wants to go to the same coffee shop all the time and hand over like 6 bucks to some megabucks corporation.

I'd rather make my own coffee, tastes better, not full of sugar and powdered stuff.

Machine 600 hundred, runs for about 4 years on average. Seperate grinder, 40 (machines never grind properly no matter how you teak them), coffee beans, costs me maybe 50 a year max. so that's 8+100+50, maybe 190 a year including milk as opposed to 360*6.

RE: Starbucks drink of choice
I happen to take coffee very f*cking seriously since my family is from the part of the world where it was discovered. I grew up drinking it like water, especially on weekends when guests would come over and it was made in the traditionally ceremonial way.

That being said, I can't do Starbucks or even the vast majority of mom and pop places. In fact, good coffee is hard to find in America which is unbelievable since it's like crack for most people.

For those in DC, there's only one place you need to go for the "puro" gold standard of coffee.

Peregrine Espresso.

You're welcome.

Get the "Finca El Puente" that's on tap (from Honduras). It comes in only one regular sized cup. I guess that would be a "grande" in Starbucks vernacular.

Only $2.50. And get this, they make your actual cup for you. It takes a few minutes actually. They literally will grind the beans, place a filter over a beaker, and then periodically pour very hot water every several seconds. They also have it brewed ready to go and some baristas might assume you're in a hurry and go for that instead so make sure you tell them you want it made from scratch just to be safe (assuming you're willing to wait). They don't mind at all. They just do whatever you prefer, but they don't always ask.

Trust me, this is the best coffee you will probably ever have in the US. The flavors are so vibrant that you won't even need milk/cream/sugar to go along with it. It's basically sex in your mouth.

The owner of Peregrine earned his cred in the coffee game by starting from the bottom. He's done a great service to DC.

I actually went to Peregrine this am and saw a couple of construction workers in there with their cups of Finca. They know what's up. You'll be good off just one cup for the whole day.

Yeah. Europeans are dead serious about coffee. Anytime I've met someone who has complained about the quality of coffee in the States it is typically a European...

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I have had coffee in Europe, and yes, it is 1) the right portion size, 2) tastes 10x better. Why is this? It can't be because of the equipment or the beans; both of those are surely equally available here. I'm guessing it has to do with the operating structure of the corporate coffee houses in the US and since Americans basically don't give a shit (in most places), there is no incentive to make "good" coffee.

Coffee in Ethiopian restaurants is also often good, but this is Ethiopian-style of course.

Rarely go to Starbucks, when I do espresso is the only thing I drink. Not defending SB but around here SB haters crack me up we have dunkin donuts every 100 feet and their coffee sucks and a medium dunks costs more then a double espresso at SB. But you can be a macho dunks customer drinking sugar crap coffee for more $ then OK espresso. Besides I'm convinced dunks coffee has the same addictive shit in it diet coke has.

Also - I see more hot chicks in Starbucks than I do in any other shop.

I never do anything about it since I am the type to get pepper-sprayed by a chick rather than a digit close.
