Sure, a lot of these places, it's easy to make a comfortable living. But in many of these places you aren't gonna see a doctor with a 4 car garage like you will see in the states. These places are good places to be an average citizen. But if you want to make real big bucks, there's no where better to make your business other than the good ol' US of A. "America, fuck yeah! Kiss my ass and suck on my balls."

But seriously. I guess it all comes down to preference when you are talking about the greatest country on earth. But if you look at it in terms of economics, military, and technology, America has all 3. There are countries that can compete with America in one category, but fall behind in one or two of the other.

Saying you find Americans more violent and aggressive, is that from watching TV or actual experience. My experience is that you will meet some of the warmest people in the world, although I will say the place is very segregated.

I am Canadian, so I consider myself neutral. The only real negative about USA is the Healthcare, which I still don't understand.

I love it when the typical American bitches about the country, because they traveled Europe for two weeks and saw some sights. It's like visiting DisneyWorld, but they never saw what was behind the scenes.

I've talked to countless immigrants here in the U.S. If it's so bad, why don't they return? I'm not talking just about those from shitholes in Africa, but from prominent European countries.

There's another thing I noticed in the USA. People are much more segregated in a way that is shocking for a Western European.

Blacks and whites mix socially far less and interracial unions are still rare

Ok, you're right, the upper class in scandinavia are paying for the middle class. Whichever way you look at it, it makes it much harder for you to make big bucks. Yeah they have good public services, but the downside is it doesn't encourage people to be independent. I've talked to mad Swedes that talk about how people take advantage of the system. I know it happens here in the states, but on a smaller scale.

As far as Switzerland goes, I'm not concerned about my safety one bit in the US. I've never been mugged or robbed or anything like that. Here and there maybe you have to worry about a punk at a bar or maybe being in a bad area of town, but to be honest, I enjoy that sense of uncertainty. I don't want to live somewhere where I've always sure I'm 100% safe. That sounds boring. I like watching a bar fight break out here and there, it adds a little spice to my night . Yeah, I do hear the clubs are alright, but mostly on the weekends and other than that, there is nothing to do in Zurich. My girl lives in Zurich, and she can't stand the place. Everyone else I've talked to that wasn't Swiss that lived there thought it was boring as hell. I'm actually going to be there in July, so I'll be able to better assess the place.

I can guarantee that people look out for one another on a far bigger scale than in many places in Europe. The thing is with all the free hand outs from the government in Europe, people don't need to look out for each other, the government does that for them. Here in the states, what you have is earned, not handed to you. I can't tell you how many times I've loaned friends money or paid their cover to get into a club, or threw them money for gas. I can go on and on. Americans are very friendly and open people. Much more open than the Germanic language speaking or Scandinavian people that I have met. I have plenty of friends from those places, and they are cool cats. And many of them are open, of course there are exceptions to the rule. But by and large, people from those countries are much colder than Americans.

And people in the US are more violent and aggressive than anywhere in the world? You've been to South America? I've never been held at knife point for my wallet here in the states, but definitely have in South America.

InternationalPlayboy - The Scandinavian may not be as openly friendly as say an American, but he isn't going to jack me or tie me to a pickup truck and drive down some country lane. Yes we can agree on South America having a certain amount of violence, but there are many no go areas in a lot of major American cities. I agree America is a great country, but the murder rates and the crime turns off a lot of people, myself included.
Europeans on a whole are not fake, if they don't like you then they will tell you. If they like you then they will fight alongside you, I believe someone here stated how they don't like stupid weather talk. I have friends in the UK that are different races and backgrounds, I don't see that sort of thing in the USA.

By Dog eat Dog I mean if you lose your job in North America you are basically screwed, in Europe they have a social system to help the people. Although I will say I believe this is part of the reason why Europe is broke and the real reason is so the people don't start to riot, which is happening now.

I think the violence is over hyped. It is very very rare that I feel uncomfortable anywhere in the US. of course there are hoods you need to stay out of, but that's true in Europe as well. A good friend of mine just got robbed in Brussels a couple months ago and has never had anything happen to her in the states. I know we have more crime, but it's not like it's a big issue. The average person in the states doesn't get robbed or shot. I know very few people who have been robbed in the US, if any. The whole "tie me to a pickup truck and drive down some country lane" thing is completely extreme. Probably something that has happened one time. I can find some extremely fucked up shit that has happened in Europe as well.

In regards to people not mixing with different races and backgrounds in the states, if you went on my facebook right now you would see me hanging with black people, white people, latin people, asian people. There are many white people like me that will mix in the US. Maybe it's not as common in the US as UK, but for example, growing up I had latino friends but very few black friends, only because a mere 10-15 black kids went to my school, and most of their friends were white kids. I hung out with a couple of them, and for the others, the reason I didn't hang out with them had nothing to do with them being black and everything to do with us not having the same interests or personalities.

We do have unemployment benefits in the states, though we don't receive close to the pay that you would receive in Switzerland. My girl is jobless right now in Switzerland and makes $4500 a month. That shit's crazy! Them doctors are paying her to stay at home and make big bucks. You think that encourages her to get a job? When she's making $4500 a month?! Hell no it's not! Why get a job when you make just as much sitting at home?

It may well not be the *best* [how/why is best?] country in the world, but would say its one of the very top ones for sure.

Going through a tough time at the moment, your country will learn form that.

You have MIT, so its not possible for your country to go down the toilet, besides you have a huge population, that will help you guys no end.

As an example of segregation in prisons in the USA, blacks and whites don't mix and there are rules on conduct. In prison in France, the UK, etc this would be unthinkable

The main reason people lock their doors where I am now is so bears don't break into their houses.

There have been 0 murders in 10 years.

There's an average of about 5 rapes a year (Per 100000 people), 1 robbery, 15 assaults, 40 burglaries, 300 thefts, 12 auto thefts,
1 arson. That's per year...

It seems the most common "crime" here is drug use. There is a decent flow of cocaine through here, but that probably has to do with a lot of powerful and rich people living here. I would say marijuana use, but it's legal here, so it's not even a criminal act anymore. Either way, non of the drug use is hurting anyone. If anything it is making for a fun time.

I think the United States is a great country. I can't really see how one can rank what is the "best" country given there are so many variables as to what one values.

There is no cookie cutter approach to happiness.


Reasons why I like America:

1. Government- Yes, our government sucks in regards to democracy and democratic participation;however, I challenge anyone to find me a better run country of similar size.

From the roads being clean and accessible to the good road side services, ease of getting residency at the DMV (try that in Russia), student loans, the military, our rights (yes they are constantly challenged and infringed on but we have a framework), I think we are definitely the best.

We can pick other examples of European countries that can challenge us on roads, ease of obtaining permanent residency, government handouts, etc, but in regards to our size, there isn't any other country that can compare.

2. Goods availability- Yep. We can get all the latest products for cheap. I am sure I'd be paying a 20% tax on an IPHONE or GOOGLE Phone if I bought it in France or Brazil.

I got Netflix at my doorstep, can download all the latest shows on a 200 dollar laptop, can get almost any kind of repair job done for cheap by hopping on craigslist.

Accessibility is a nice thing.

Oh, and yeah, lets not underestimate the value of customer service.

3. Diversity- Many European countries are pretty monolithic in make up.

America has great access to different cultures (from the actual people from different cultures to expressions of cultures including food, dance, ways of life, etc).

4. Health care- The most expensive but the best in terms of treatment.

Try getting an MRI in Europe or Russia on demand. You will be put on a waiting list.

Yes it is expensive. But honestly, if you are paying 100 bucks for a smartphone plan you can afford health care in the United States. I think a lot of the people who don't have health care, assuming they have a job, choose not to pay for health care. I think most people if working full time can afford a high deductible plan.

5. Food- Almost every cuisine is available in the United States.

6.Business Opportunity- America is the only place I know of where you can fuck up your life multiple times and still have a shot at a decent life (within reason). There are examples of men who come from prison and end up starting their own business and making lots of money.

Reasons I don't like America:

1. Racism- There is not a country on planet earth where Racism is more important than the United States, from history to present day, even with a black president. I could go more into this but I have no desire to engage in a race debate online.

2. Superficial/Materialistic culture- A by product of a successful capitalist economy. We worship people with wealth more than people with character.

Read The Great Gatsby for more insight into this phenomenon.

3.Religion/Conservatism- I honestly wonder if we are one of the most fundamentalist countries in the world. I know that our media loves to pick on Iran and Saudi Arabia but some of the shit I see, even in progressive cities like New York and Los Angeles, makes me wonder if I live in the Western version of Saudi Arabia living in the U.S.

I mean, we almost got rid of a good president (not that I like him but compared to other presidents the 90s was not bad) because he got a blow job.

We are willing to elect the most incompetent political leaders since they love Jesus and have family values.

I honestly think over half the country is waiting for the triple six beast to rise out of the Pacific ocean.

I am so not joking.


4. Completely controlled population- It is funny how Americans champion their freedom when most of them live under private tyrannies (called corporations).

Americans are controlled by their jobs because their labor is sold to an employer which takes their freedom (you do what the employer says so long as he is paying you).

The employer pays them money so they can then become controlled by their possessions (which is marketed by the same employers who create wants for their workers to buy, all money spent going back to the employer).

Americans then build their lives based on this uneven arrangement and now the stability of their family, their possessions, their drug habits, whatever, is based on a servile existence.

If the employees bitch about management they risk losing their job. which means losing their possessions, which mean loss of status, which means watching their kids starve, which means loss of family.

Americans. for the most part, accept whatever the employer wants or whatever price the market dictates (which employers largely control).

The unions of the past have all been destroyed.

America is a business run society without question.

So yeah, Americans are taught to shut the fuck up, work the levers, take your salary or hourly wage, and you can have a great slave life.

Honestly, I think America has created the greatest form of national control that has ever existed.

But I digress.

Just to say I was researching yesterday which countries had the highest murder rate after Chavez's death cos Caracas was supposed to be no 1

My earlier statement that I felt more threatened in the USA than anywhere poor in Africa is borne out by the stats. The exceptions are South Africa, the DRC and Somalia

Actually, your argument isn't borne out at all by the stats. As most of us would expect, Africa and South and Central America are much more dangerous. Look at the country data:

I lived in Vitoria (#17) for a couple months, nothing ever happened to me there, and only one of my many friends who have grown up there has every had anything happened to them there.

I spent a month in Medellin (#14) and was robbed for about $20 and a crappy wallet.

Conclusion: I believe I would still rather live in either of those cities than a majority of safer European cities. I haven't been to Europe yet and can't be sure of that, but judging from the people I've met from both places, I'm picking Vitoria and Medellin. Is safety really that big of an issue for you? Would you be hanging out in the ghettos of the US if you lived here? I sure don't, and never have a fear for my safety. Most of these murders are between gang members and people who put themselves in bad situations. The average person isn't a part of these statistics.

Side note: Brazil and Mexico dominate that list.

America is great if you want to make some money. If you're looking for love, you're looking in the wrong place.

I'm pretty sure that if I grew up in legit abject poverty, I wouldn't give two fucks about love. I still don't as much as some people think they do.

I've also tried explaining our system of feminism to foreigners from all over and they have no idea what the fuck I'm talking about.

They think feminism is a country where a stay at home wife is the norm because they know that the choice between working and staying at home to raise a family is a privilege. They weren't even "red pill", they were just old fashioned.

The biggest thing that would keep me from expatriating in the future would be the language barrier. After four months in Europe, my brain got pretty fucking tired of German. Mainland Europeans have a pretty big advantage in that respect; there's plenty of them who have been exposed to different languages since they were infants.

There's not much point talking about homicide rate in the US without also considering geographic data, demographic data, and motive along with it.

For the most part, the US is not violent for visitors unless you are around people who are drinking and belligerent. Certain city neighborhoods are extremely dangerous, but most are not. Almost no rural areas are dangerous unless you deliberately go looking for trouble (or get into an accident).

PS I have no experience in the southwest or any rural area with lots of illegal immigrants.

Where IS the best country in the world if America is not?

Why are we arguing over America being the best country or not and not China or Russia? Because we already know there are too many things way to fucked up with those countries. No one else is even putting effort into a thread with the tittle "Russia is the best country in the world." Because the idea would get shut down faster than you could type the thread.

Don't see how you can ignore the crime, it a part of the country. I have been to hoods in the USA and I can tell you a lot of dudes on this forum wouldn't even venture into them.
Generally, no country is dangerous for visitors. I had friend's years ago that were driving back from Florida and stopped in a restaurant in Georgia, they were not served and decided to get mouthy. They were greeted with shotguns and got the hell out of there, never to return.
I think a lot of people live in lilywhite suburbs and aren't painting the whole picture.
My aunt lived in Brooklyn years ago, she had 7 locks on her apartment door. She went on holiday and they still broke into her apartment and stole stuff, she then moved to Long Island.
Again I am not saying it is a bad country, I think it has a lot of great things going for it.
I will say you can make money there, where as in Europe people seem to be born into a class and it is very hard to break out of that class.
