It seems classic shit like the rest of the places, but the environment can be still a much better place and the women more feminine, I'm guessing. The rule for all places:

-Some guys go, get lucky/good timing/opportunities; others just have a bad run because of season, weather, logistics, etc.
-To truly increase probabilities, you need to be around and show you aren't just a fly-by-night guy
-Everything you do and have enhances that (style, money, humor, exotic factor), but remember only TIME increases or leverages probability

I'm not sure I'm feeling this place - it's very.... harsh, shall we say.

Mainly because of how it looks - the brutalist Communist architecture is very oppressive - by design. And there is just so much of it. No wonder people think Romania is some satellite of Russia. There are loads and loads of beautiful old French buildings from before the communist era but they are overshadowed, everywhere, by these black and grey concrete monoliths.

Concrete is a like the saxophone - in the wrong hands, it is the Devil's own instrument.

There are parks here, quite a few actually, but they seem a bit skanky. In London we have two kinds of parks - beautiful ones like Green Park and Regent's Park but we also have those shitty little ones you find in housing projects, with mud where there used to be grass, dog shit and winos drinking meths and white cider.

The parks here seem to be the size of Hyde Park but the latter shittier kind!

I mean, the thing is, they're not that bad, but they just have that feel about them, a kind of 1970s grimness.

Overall, the people seem friendly and cultured on the whole - lots of wine shops, good supermarkets with a good ranges of foods, prices vary but are reasonable. Nice looking shops, bars and restaurant tucked down all the side streets, a lot like Paris actually.

I'm currently looking at flats to rent (apartments) but most are in these old shitty commie blocks with graffiti all over them and cat-piss smelling hallways... it makes Bangkok and Saigon seem so fucking 1st world lol. The interior decor leaves a LOT to be desired - bizarre furniture buying choices, and they all (95%) have baths instead of stand-up shower cubicles - I fucking hate baths with little hand held showers, no can do!

The girls - not that many hot ones around to be honest, about the same as London so far I'd say. It's true though, that if you are an ass-man, it's a good city! There is a high proportion of tight little buns everywhere.

Tinder - for me, it's been bad so far. First girl was an obvious gypsy scam artist who I played along for some amusement. Then some 31 year old (ugh) blonde, seemed ok but has gone quiet. Now a late-twenties tall raven haired girl who seems much more upbeat... and that's about it other than a few 30+ Ugs I unmatched.

I got a similar feeling of "something ain't quite right here" when I moved to Vietnam. Vietnam was ok, I met some nice girls and did some cool things but I stayed far too long and should have quit when my gut told me too - well, my gut is kinda telling me too here as well. It could just be that it's too early to tell but.. I dunno. I have another week of this air bnb... might use the time to see more flats, discover more areas, try to get the flag, try the food, see if my mind changes...

Or maybe just try a different EE city - any suggestions?

What’s Romania like during the colder months of Feb/March? I’ve been banging this Romanian girl and I’ve got the urge to check out Romania but not București, I’ve already been warned away from that alledged hellhole by the girl!

My thoughts are Iași with the ability to visit Moldova or Cluj-Napoca, is there any benefit to learning basic Romanian or is English (plus French) enough? I’m being semi-forced to learn but may take it more seriously if there’s a benefit.

If you avoid Bucharest I'd say Romania is quite good. It doesn't get hordes of tourists so there is still some exotic factor. Problem is that girls are very social circle oriented. It feels like you need to win over her friends before you get the bang. I also hate the fact that everybody smokes, I would rank it as one of the worst countries for non-smokers.

Bikal I don’t know why that girl scared u off Bucharest. It’s not a hellhole. Maybe if someone lived in a saint tropez beach club all his life he’d think Bucharest is a hellhole. It’s a normal city with a decent center and residential suburbs and decent parks. It’s kinda boring in the day though and taxis are assholes but that’s about it.

It's all perspective. I've been to Romania twice and I quite like the country and the people. I must admit that I didn't enjoy Bucharest that much but I did have some enjoyable nights because I infiltrated a couple social circles.

I've been to Cluj, Brasov, Bran and Oradea. As someone referenced earlier, cities other than Bucharest aren't that heavily populated but they can be quaint and you can have a good time with the right mindset and meeting the right people. Needless to say, as a black man, I stood out but not in a bad way. Naturally I had good and bad experiences due to my ethnicity but overall my experience was great. It definitely helped that I was American as that is a doubly rare to not only meet an American but also to meet a brotha.

Last but not least, I have always had great times dating Romanian women. They have a certain charm that most women in the west lack.

i experience having dated 2 in my life is they have amazing tight bodies, typically very charming pleasing personality but also extremely crazy. One of them was into BDSM and never wanted to be looked at during sex. Other one refused to plan more than 1 day in advance. I dated one Romanian about a year ago and it was one of the strangest experiences of my life. We went on about three dates, even getting her back to my apartment, but she resisted any and all escalation attempts (rare for me; if I get them back to my place they're getting fucked and I never get LMR).

After the third date she texted this the next day out of the blue - and I'll never forget it: "Just met the man of my dreams and I can't believe how fast things are moving! Wow! Anyway, take care and best of luck in the future!"

We had our dates and time together. I left the country but we kept up the flirtation/sexting for half a year and then found out of the blue she's now married to a Romanian guy. My reaction to her was "wtf... maybe you could've given me a warning? What city would be the best location, if i wanted to use it as a base to explore the most beautiful spots, hiking options and nature?

Want to spend at least a few months in Romania this summer really getting into nature, clearing my mind, working independently and being healthy. Obviously if there's as much a balance between that and daily standard of life, girls, shops, facilities, decent enough food options etc, i'd want that too. Ideally i'm thinking of a city of around 3-500k that can use as a base, whilst exploring the region.

I know pretty much nothing about the place as it stands beyond a) Bucharest is ugly and grim and, b) the carpathians are stunning. But i'm sure there's more to it all. Any tips appreciated.

Also - and i'm guessing this is a long shot - but one that isn't overly populous is Gypsies would be good.

Heard Siubi is decent shout, around 500k, and pretty central. Any thoughts?

The Balkans are on my mind as well. Can anyone comment with first-hand experience on what it takes for a non-EU citizen to establish residency in Romania? Specifically, how much income do you have to prove?

The Bulgarian consulate in Washington DC said you have to prove $300/mo. in income to establish long-term residency in Bulgaria. Not sure I trust that...seems low.

Sibiu the city has 150k pop., the whole county including the villages and the other small towns has 400k.
Brasov is twice as big, is closer to the good treks and its right in the middle of the country, and being twice bigger and atracting more tourists has a better nightlife naturally
They are both touristy so prices close, you can check rents and stuff like that on olx . ro

I'm here for work as a non-EU citizen. I recently got approved for residency here, however, I work for a multinational company. It was not an easy process and am not sure how you would do it on your own.

One possibility may be to contact a local law firm to set up what is essentially a shell company as an "entrepreneur". Should cost a few thousand dollars. It's not a particularly foreign friendly country in terms of immigration.

Not that I know of and I highly doubt it. Infrastructure outside of decent sized cities is quite lacking. The only decent towns outside of Brasov are touristy towns which it seems like you want to avoid. Brasov is very pleasant though--was just there a couple weeks ago and it was a much needed break from Bucharest. Why wouldnt you want to be there though? Seems like it would fit what you're looking for in terms of size and location.

Yea well Brasov is the least touristy in the area, the only thing to visit there is the old town which is a small part of the city, in the commie blocks life is normal, the biggest tourists spots, Bran, Rasnov Castle, Peless palace, the mountains and whatever are like 30-50 km's away.
Romania is safe all round even with the gypsies that are still there, most of the criminals are in the west now, any place in Romania is probably ten times safer than the center of Paris or London.
You need to take care in the woods around Brasov though, theres quite a few bears and wolves still around, bears come even in the city sometimes to feed from garbage containers.

City has seen extreme development the last few years and it is becoming a leftist hub for Romania with hipster and career women flocking to the city.

If you want traditional romanian girls it is best to be avoided and head to Iasi/Timisoara.
If you just want to have fun and know good game Cluj is a good city for that.

Best precaution is to stay alert so they dont sneak up on you and the classic pepper spray or some crackers/whistle for noise, also wandering in a group if possible.

Yeah that's the impression i got from the Romanian guy i know. Said it was full of hipsters anyway. I find them very tiresome frankly, and thats the non-overtly political ones.

Think Brasov sounds like the place for me. Is the general standard of English there OK? I've been told that Romanians (in general) have a high English knowledge, for the region at least.
