I just did and also took a little interest in French revolution.

French lit = Balzac, especially "Lost Illusions," and Baudelaire. Montaigne can not be recommended enough. Napolean-related intrigue: Dumas, but shallow.

I posted some stuff about France when I was going through this phase about war documentaries. I recommend some videos on YouTube if you haven't checked them out already.

One video called Icons of Power is about Napoleon; arguably the most ambitious individual of all time. It talks about the circumstances in France after the revolution that set the stage for his rise.





This doc is also informative





As for books, I recommend A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. Classic.

This is probably the closest to what you're looking for. It's mostly based on firsthand accounts of what went down and isn't trying to be overly scholarly in its approach.

And if you don't mind a fictional treatment, of course there's also A Tale of Two Cities if you want to get a feel for what living through the French Revolution was like.
