I tried searching the forum for thoughts on ridiculous tie-knots, but alas couldn't find anything specifically on it.

Here goes... Anybody tie this type of stuff? Is this just too gaudy?





I am not a suit and tie (or pocket square) type of guy, but this forum is starting to rub off on me. Im starting to get fashion-fever.

How do you stop the pocket squares from ruining the lines of the jacket by stretching out the pocket? My pockets are sewn shut,but if I cut the stitching and add a silk pocket square will it not bulge out the pocket and damage the suit slightly?

Interested to hear opinions on how to avoid that issue.

A pocket square doesn't weigh enough to stretch a pocket.

They're not meant to stay that way. Jackets are shipped with their pocket sewn shit to prevent stretching during transit. Once you buy it, you are supposed to remove the stitching.

No, it doesn't way enough, the jacket will contour slightly and safely.

It's things like keys or cell phones which weigh too much and distort jackets.

How long do you think a suit lasts? Don't treat it like something you keep in plastic wrap and never use. They are meant to be enjoyed, enjoy it.

A little update- I've been rocking the square going out at night. And its been a uniform success. Context- Los Angeles

A couple thoughts for the night-
1) Skip the white square "presidential fold". Its just too bland, and its not "flashy enough". I would do the multi-step fold instead.



2) Puff or Reverse Puff seem to be the most fun, spontaneous way to rock the square. The folds and texture change on the square are visually very cool. Lots of girls will look once, then sneak another peek to check the square. Something about the "controlled chaos" throws their heads for a spin.

3) The combo that seems to work w/me is have a low-contrast jacket/pants/shirt that emphasizes my physique (broad shoulders, narrow waist, height) w/a loud pocket square.



^^^ That square is LOUD. I love the flair.

I have gotten almost nothing but compliments. A couple girls will outright walk up to talk to you. A few will gawk and stare. I've also gotten negative attention from fatties and other dudes (usually sloppily dressed), but haters gonna hate. Cute and beautiful girls love the flash and whimisical nature of a loud, fun square.

Couple thoughts on the above pictures. Somehow a couple elements looked "off" to me. You guys are free to correct me, or chime in.

I am no fashion expert, but heres what I see at a glance-

1) UL- Dude didnt button up his shirt all the way and it is a button-down- sloppy. Tie is peaking through- color continuity break (not sure what can be done about this). Overly large watch. Square could be rocked cooler. Good things- I like the jacket and shirt. Cool colors.
2) UR- Maybe a bad picture, but the suit looks too tight. He looks like a stuffed sausage (look at the X-marks on the midsection). Maybe he had a big meal. Good things- Cool tie, nice fit on jacket around shoulders/arms, like the color combinations.
3) LL- Dude on the left has the same "stuffed sausage" look (X-marks are extremely visible on midsection), but not as bad as UR. The ties of both men dont seem to harmonize w/the suits.
4) LR- On the surface it all fits, but I dont like his look. Maybe his facial expression??? Narrow lapels? Can't really pinpoint what it is.

I have a grey suit and I'm wearing a black shirt with it.
Not sure about tie and pocket square color though? I was thinking about getting a purple tie, what do you guys think of this?
And what kind of square would go well with this? Maybe a black one?

Study the color wheel. If your clothes fit well and match/complement each other, your doing great.

I like my stuff pretty analogous. With one piece "poppin" out.

Usually its either the shirt or the square. If I'm wearing a flashy shirt I will keep the square more low key and neutral. If the I'm wearing a flashy square, the shirt is more low key and neutral.

Essentially you want to look well put together with one or two items that are meant to draw the eye to them. I normally use my hair, a square, or a belt buckle for that. If I feel like having a real blast out on the town I'll suit up, make my hair look sick, throw in a flashy square, and put on a loud belt buckle. Haters are gonna hate anyways, you may as well give them something worth hating on.

Went out on Friday night and killed it.
Paisley silver and blue pocket square with a matching tie on a bright blue shirt with a light grey suit. Had different women coming up to me all night complimenting me on it.
The woman I was with was not happy...



All the other guys were wearing sweaters and plaid button ups. They never had a chance!

Question for you guys, my silk squares can't seem to hold much of a fold for long and it seems to be a waste of time doing anything other than picking them up from the middle and shoving them in. Is there a technique for this that I don't know? I'm about to just go with heavier fabrics from here on out.

I had a hard time with that too. Just go with cotton squares if you want to fold them and keep a crisper look. I've rocked a silk square by trying to square it up but it just billows like a cloud out of the pocket.

I got a nice medium grey suit, and a lighter, more pale cream one. I usually wear with black or white shirt.

Looking forward for these to make them pop.

Fabric is one issue, but it also depends on the size of the square and the size of your jacket pocket (which usually goes by lapel size). 10.5x10.5 is too small for anything other than shoving in your pocket, 13x13 is optimal, 16x16 for intricate folds, though they will bulge with a normal fold. Ideally the square should flair out of the pocket but not bulge inside the pocket.

That blue paisley you have is an attention grabber so I would say have it puffy and flaired out. If you have neutral solid colors, folded and neat is classic, though I find cotton is better to hold the fold. What kind of fold are you using on what sort of pattern?

Love grey suits; great for all occasions. I need a white one in my arsenal for the summer. I also like the reverse contrast of white on black. What kind of squares are you throwing with those?

Long story short- She flipped out on me, when another girl asked to get her an OJ from the bar (at a house party).
