Just wanted to share this short article by Seth Godin. It has some brilliant tips on how to make your presentations better. It is the sort of thinking that Steve Jobs probably used when designing his excellent product launches.

It is funny. I have never owned an Apple product. But I really loved Steve Jobs. The recent biography on him was really good.

95% of that doc was talking about what a bad ppt looks like and 5% was a very vague example of "good" ones.

The problem is nobody reads reports, which is how most information should probably be passed around a corporation. Instead people create docuslides which are meant to convey all the information that'd be in a good report but jam it onto PowerPoint slides. These are meant to be passed around via email so that managers can flip through them at their liesure. A lot of people take these slides and try and present off of them in meetings which is a disaster.

My solution is to create two sets of slides. One set is what I email people if they ask for a copy of my presentation. The other is a much slimmer set which I use to give talks. It's a little more work but I'm a much more effective communicator for it.

You are doing PowerPoint wrong by opening the program.

Use Prezi if you have to give a multimedia presentation.

Bezos (genius founder of Amazon) banned Power Point presentation because he claimed it was a crutch for people that didn't truly understand their material.

I actually tried this out and made a presentation with it that I had to do for work (who would otherwise be in ppt). I'm hoping it will be well received because our entire upper echelon lives and dies by ppts.

His point about removing a third of your material after you've written everything you have to say is about right. People like being told things they already know. And they'll learn more effectively by figuring out the punch line on their own. Unfortunately not all of our bosses are Jeff Bezos and many of us corporate drones are stuck using PowerPoint for the time being. You can make it into a useful tool, you just have to put in the extra work.
