I've also heard a few of those foreigners with no morals that go to China and break hearts of naive and innocent girls. I remember reading about (and I just had to re-verify it) the British guy who was executed in 2009 for smuggling 4 kg. of heroin into Xinjiang. If you smuggle drugs into ANY Asian country you run the risk of being put to death or spending years wasting away in prison. I wasn't talking about smuggling drugs though, just smoking a joint that someone else procured and rolled. Hell, in Yunnan there is wild cannabis growing everywhere. You'll see it growing in gardens in Kunming. Walk up the side of Cangshan and you'll see a great deal of wild marijuana. In Old Dali, little old ladies are slinging it out of the back of their noodle and souvenir shops. There are stores selling giant bongs and meter-long pipes. They claim it's for tobacco but, c'mon. When I was on the bus headed down to Xishaungbanna I saw a local guy hitting a giant bong on the side of the road. Perhaps, it was just tobacco...

I'm not talking about walking down Qianmen Lu in Beijing with a spliff. Obviously, that's going to get you in trouble and you would have to be very stupid to use drugs in populated public places. Also, I've heard the closer to Beijing you are, the more closely the official party line is followed. Out in the far reaches of the country, laws are less relevant, as BadWolf has already described.

As a traveler, you can smoke but you just have to be extremely cautious and don't go looking for it---it always has just kind of found me. When you travel, you don't have connections in a city so it's a lot easier to get away with some things in my opinion. If I were living in China there is no way I would mess around with anything illegal because if people find out, they can use it against you. In that sense, I agree wholeheartedly with your cautionary tone, BadWolf. Don't disrespect China and don't give the Chinese a reason to look down on foreigners.

However, if you're traveling, you're onto the next city before you know it and chances are you're not going to be doing drugs with other Chinese people. You'll be flying under the radar. You just have to be very cautious. Don't buy hash from those Arab street dealers in Shanghai.

When I was in Dali I was talking to a Polish expat who was married to a local girl and was running a coffee shop that helped raise money for a charity in one of the poorer areas of Yunnan. He explained that if you got caught with weed in Dali you would have to pay a bribe but you wouldn't see jail time or get deported, provided that you could come up with the money. I don't know exactly how much money is needed to buy your way out though.

The Polish guy told me there was a Canadian guy who had been living in Dali who had turned his house into a giant grow-op. The guy had been flying under the radar until he sold weed to some teenagers vacationing from Beijing. I guess the teenagers brought some of the weed back with them to Beijing and got busted at the airport. They fessed up and told the authorities where they bought it and the guy got arrested on orders from Beijing. According to the Polish coffee shop owner, the guy was doing to two-years at the local jail in New Dali and then would be deported back to Canada. Supposedly, since that happened there has been more of a police presence from Beijing in Dali to clamp down on the drug tourism in the area. But anyhow, that's just hearsay. Tons of drugs still get trafficked out of Laos and Myanmar through Yunnan and out of Chinese ports every year. I'm just saying it's there.

My main point is that you most likely won't be executed for smoking a joint, it's just that the rules (like lots of things in developing parts of Asia) are still blurry and undefined. Now that I'm a couple years older, I do have to agree though, drugs aren't worth the risk in China. Just take a vacation to Laos or Cambodia if want to get into the substances.

I'm sure you have more experience with China than many of us, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I got the impression that your post was a bit black and white and polarised Chinse women into two groups. In my experience, the reality is far more complex.

Quite a few of the girls I encountered in BJ (admittedly, only about six months total, and another two months in NE China) basically comprised a fairly new middle class who had been brought up watching sex and the city or similar garbage, and as such, they had few hangups about sport fucking (they just told their parents they were still virgins, even if they've already been with multiple guys). This is so true. On DC metro when train stops, people stand to the sides of the doors and wait for people to exit, then get on. On BJ metro, it's a mad rush to get in and out and you just kind of muscle your way through.

I think he's just trying to emphasize the point that this is a culturally completely different place than the West. This is a family based culture, kids and close to their parents.
I don't usually get along with english teachers for the reasons badwolf mentioned. They come here, they feel like rockstars, and they try to rack up as many notches as possible with zero understanding of chinese culture and it annoys the other laowai (this is not to say that all students/workers are perfect and all english teachers are like this, i'm generalizing based on my experiences, which may be very different from other peoples) because then we get lumped into that category.

when you walk into a resteraunt, you will be ignored until you yell for the waiter. when he comes over, he just says "what do you want?" get used to this and roll with it. chinese people don't line up, this means that when you cut them, they don't get upset because everyone else is doing it. whatever they do, agree and amplify

generally speaking, if shit gets bad, it shouldn't be too much of an extra cost. for example, healthcare is really cheap and up to standard.not as good as an american hospital, but you won't die and it's clean. i had a friend who fell and split his head open, two days in the hospital,stitches, cat scan, medicine, ect. all came out to under 1000 kuai, or a little over 150$

I did some research and checked some airbnb places and found some (surprisingly) nice ones for $20 the night. Now I find this really great but after staying month/2 months it really adds up...

I was thinking on finding some sort of small side gig, like helping a local with stuff, english, spanish, etc. in exchange for some money or something. How common and easy it is to find these kind of opportunities?

(his wife is a hot 26 year old with a uni education)

It's pretty easy to get a job here teaching English. Basic qualifications typically include being foreign and breathing. Food might be a little more expensive in Beijing but you can still find meals for US$2 or so. If you're really on a budget you can get packs of instant noodles for 2rmb.

Leisure can get pricey, it depends on what you want to do. Most things are cheaper than the US but still expensive by Chinese standards.

The subway is 2rmb, buses are 1rmb. You can buy a scooter for 1600rmb. A pedal bike will run up from 500rmb.

What about jobs teaching English without contract involved? Let's say I plan on staying 1 or 2 months, obviously no hiring with contract involved would take place. Would it be possible to still get the gig for the time being ?
