I have no problem with how His Honor handled this one. I would have hoped that if she had to actually appear live in court her attorney would have checked her silly behavior, but obviously the fact that she was in jail in an orange jumpsuit didn't convince her of the gravity of the situation she was in. She thought it was funny. The judge reminded her that it wasn't a joke. People have gotten contempt charges for a lot less than what she said - he brushed aside the silliness, but you can't curse out a judge. Maybe the 30 days, and possibly getting her ass whipped and being forced to eat out a bull dyke will wipe the smile off her face.

He's a judge, not a king. Yeah, the girl was a fucking idiot, but the judge sinks to her level by acting catty with an arbitrary sentence because he felt disrespected.

I don't know, my opinion here may be biased by my deep anti-authoritarian streak. The idea of walking into a special room where you have to practically genuflect and call another human being "your honor" in the year 2013 or else he can arbitrarily throw you in jail for a month is ridiculous to me.

Why do we have judges? Is is to sentence people who break the law so that society operates smoothly? Or is it to give these special people the opportunity to throw people in jail because they personally don't like them?

The only thing I hate more than a stupid, entitled cunt is an arrogant, power-tripping government official.

The whole point of a bond hearing is to assess whether or not the Defendant has a fixed address, fixed employment, is on parole or probation, has any prior failures to appear, has any prior criminal record, or if there is anything disturbing in the Statement of Probable cause. Anything else or any other conduct by the Defendant which is unrelated to those factors is unhelpful, disruptive, and slows down the judicial process. I side with the judge here.

Direct contempt can be defined simply as an incredibly stupid act which occurs in the presence of the judge. She was held in direct criminal contempt because her disrespect and stupidity occurred in the judge's presence.

This occurred in Miami-Dade County and I have seen multiple other acts of stupidity at bond hearings in that jurisdiction. This judge was only recently appointed to the bench and it is somewhat interesting to me that he was a former congressman.

You're right now that I think about it more. I was initially looking at it from the perspective of him sentencing her because she disrespected HIM personally, which was fucked up. But if you look at like he is sentencing her for disrespecting the court (hence the name of the charge - contempt of court) and law itself, then it becomes clear he was in the right. It's his duty as a judge to preserve the integrity of the judicial process and ensure compliance and respect for the law.

I feel better about it looking at it from that perspective. I really just hate the idea of government officials abusing power for personal reasons, so I'm always quick to look for that sort of thing. Definitely won't be shedding any tear for this bitch though, she needed to be checked hard like that.

This is what happens to girls who never deal with the judicial system and really think it's all a game like the free world is for them (can pretty much do whatever they want out here with no consequences). I think most guys are smart enough to know that you should be polite and nice to cops, judges, etc if you ever caught up in something unless you don't care about sitting in jail. Of course there's those dumbasses who mouth off to cops and act surprised when they're getting beat on the ground. Or maybe she's just a hoodrat who's always in and out of jail and doesn't care.

I think it is more important to consider what would happen had the judge NOT gotten in her ass when she got out of line.

This video goes out (probably not nearly as viral, but still) and shows the judge/legal authority taking shit from some punk kid. In addition to this little dumbass thinking she can get away with ANYTHING since even a judicial official won't check her, thousands (millions?) of like-minded little shits are gonna think that the legal system is a joke for them to mess with.

30 days in county won't be a picnic, but this judge did what he needed to do to protect the integrity of the system.

Haha, I'm actually on the girl's side in this case, due to my own anti-authoritarian streak. I have genuine contempt for cops, judges, courts, and the whole legal system. They never show me any respect, so why should I show them any? Just because the rest of society says they have authority and jurisdiction over me? I was never consulted on any laws, nor have I consented to most of them being imposed on me. Of course, I doubt this girl has ever considered the legal system in a philosophical approach like me, but still.

First, she was arrested on a drug charge on laws I don't agree with. Then the judge is condescending toward her the whole time, like some nervous 18-year-old is supposed to just know formal court procedures and why they're asking her about her jewelry. I got the impression her giggling and touching her hair was more out of nervousness than trying to be flirty. Then the judge initially doesn't even formally dismiss her, just waves her off with "bye bye" and seems to take offense she responds with "adios" and matches his tone.

I'm not defending the girl because of white-knighting, but because I'd be pissed off if a judge acted the same way toward me. I suspect that's also the reason behind the reddit commenters defending her. I'd be just as pissed off as her if he doubled my fine too in the same manner. Yes, I'm smart enough to know I need to control my emotions in a courtroom. But I find there is a sweet vicarious pleasure in seeing someone flip off the judge the way I would be internally seething to.

And well you should. I just finished reading the February 4th issue of Sports Illustrated. On the last page of each issue, there's a column called "Point After," usually written by a journalist who writes about some sports issue he finds relevant or moving for some reason. The column in this issue was written by someone named Jeff Deskovic, who from age 17 to 33 was in Elmira State Prison in NY. He wrote about how sports, both on tv and playing in the yard with fellow inmates, sustained him. He was wrongfully convicted of the rape and murder of a classmate at Peekskill High School. He was 16 at the time, and his confession was coerced. His case was filled with prosecutorial misconduct and fraudulent testimony, but he still lost all appeals and was refused parole. In '06, he was cleared when The Innocence Project used the DNA evidence to find the actual perpetrator, a career criminal who had actually killed another woman 3 years after Peskovic was locked up. An ambitious prosecutor will bury evidence that he knows will exonerate a defendant, because they care more about conviction rates than getting the actual perpetrator of a crime. Then they resist all efforts to review or retest evidence because they don't want the conviction overturned, because it will expose either incompetence or corruption. We all remember the Central Park Jogger case, where the same thing happened. The boys that were arrested weren't "innocents" (they were in the park that night robbing people), but they weren't guilty of THAT crime. There was plenty of DNA collected, and NONE of it belonged to those boys. They found out the actual perpetrator was locked up already for another crime. Linda Fairstein, the sex crimes prosecutor, used that case for two failed runs for Manhattan DA, and has written novels and been consulted for tons of tv shows, as well as personal appearances. Those kids made for great defendants, and she knew they could get quick, easy convictions with their coerced confessions - some extracted before the boys got legal counsel. There's no excuse NOT to test DNA to make sure you've got the right guy.

I had to leave, so I don't know what kind of discussion they had about it, but her behavior was so extreme that this has ended up widely circulated. It's highly unusual for a defendant to behave this way in front of a judge.

While I'll agree that it is a more fair outcome, I can't understand why the system would do a 180 on a decision it already made like that; only one day had passed and most cases get lost in red tape for at least a few weeks/months.

I'm on her side simply because I'm on the side of anyone who's being bullied by the courts. Yes, it was a bitch move for her to flip off the judge, but the judge made the first bitch move by doubling her fine after she nervously said "adios". If a judge was an asshole to me, I'd want to flip him off too. I have no respect for the court system. I would restrain myself, because I know the judge has unchecked authority to imprison me, not because I respect the legal system. So I can't judge this girl for reacting the same way I would want to react. Hell, in some ways she has bigger balls than I do for actually going through with flipping him off.

But I think that's why we have defense lawyers, because so many people would want to respond the same way. So we have lawyers to speak for us and remind us to keep our nervous tics in check and how to behave in the courtroom. Really, this girl should've had legal counsel available before going in front of the judge, especially since she's a stupid 18-year-old kid. I'm not sure why she was denied at least a public defender. I'm sure her behavior would've been much different with a lawyer speaking on her behalf.

Normally if somebody is being a dick to me, I'll flip them off, punch them, etc. Maybe I'll win the fight, maybe they will. But at least I theoretically always have a means of recourse against them. But with the courts? There's nothing I can do to them that they can't do tenfold back to me. They have free reign to be the biggest dicks on the planet, and I have no choice but to submit to them. That shit pisses me off to no end, which is why I will defend anyone, cute girl or not, being bullied by the courts.

Also, for those of you who believe "good for the judge, checking that entitled bitch's attitude", how is that different than in court cases where a father is ordered to pay unreasonable child support and feminists respond with "good for the judge, checking that deadbeat dad's attitude"? I try to be consistent in my defense of parties being bullied by the court system in all cases.
