Anyone spend time in Bali before? Specifically Ubud.

I know Bali (beach areas) gets a lot of drunken trash from Australia, but Ubud seems to be a hippie-ish kind of place from what I can tell.

Anyone know what the scene might be like there?

The consensus is that it's overrated. Regarding Ubud it is nice for the sightseeing/cultural experience though if you're into that. There's just not enough people there to make the logistics worth it however.

One of the other Indonesian islands.

Ubud is cooler than it gets credit for here. Avoid the monkey forest and work on the art scene - there's actually a pretty deep undercurrent you can tap into with the holistic and artsy crowd but you're going to need an in. If you show up as a random white dude and stay for a week you'll never see it.

A couple cool things: one, go to a cockfight; two, get some custom hand-made knives around Ubud or in Tanah Lot; three, go to the Reptile Park southwest of Ubud and fuck with the cobras. Unlike most zoos, the cages in the Bali Reptile Park aren't mirrored, so the snakes can see you... and will strike at the glass if you make sudden movements.
