Personally, I'm not a hostel kind of guy. That's just not my style since I'm not a backpacker. There are some places where staying at one can be smooth (with the private room option) and not a backpacker type of scene, but I don't think Rio is one of those places. Affordable lodging is so hard to come by and people want to go there so bad that the type of folks you find in hostels will impact your trip if you're looking to have a player experience. I mean do you really want to go to Rio to hook up with dingy gringas? You could do that in far less expensive locales! So, I'd say either do the private room if it's in a decent location and they allow visitors or put off Rio for another time. What are your goals for your trip?

Technically I don't think Miami is in the tropics, it's sub-tropical, but I know what you mean.

I actually knew a guy from DC who lived in South Beach (back when I was a teenager) and who told me how crazy Rio was and how it destroys South Beach. This was before I had been to either spots.

For all of Miami's latin influence, it's still an American city (segregated, etc). I'm a grateful American but Brazilian social culture destroys ours. I don't think most people who have been to both would ever give Miami props over Rio. Compared to cities in the US, it's great, but once you're talking about actual places in Latin America, that's where the discussion ends.

But to really answer your question, we should do a rundown of different factors where each city has the advantage. Here are a few. Add any that you think I've missed.

Food: Miami

Nightlife: Miami

Safety: Miami

Activities: Rio

Women: Rio

Beach culture: Rio

Logistics: Miami

Prices: Rio

Scenery: Rio

Car culture: Miami

Fitness: Rio

The Main Strip: Rio (Avenida Atlantica is more epic to me than Ocean Drive, unless you like cars, nothing like the Dos Irmaois backdrop on a sunny day).

Cultural Diversity: Miami (communities from every Latin American country)

Events: Rio. Miami may have WMC, but that has nothing on Carnaval.

Ease of swooping: Both aren't necessarily easy, but I gotta give it to Miami because of Spring Break and lack of a language barrier.

Ease of making friends/social circle/contacts: Rio. Brazilians are extremely sociable.

Best tail: Rio (greatest bundas in the world).

High stakes action: Rio (Fountainbleau gets its props, but there's much more going down in Copacabana Palace).

Strip clubs: Rio hands down. You get to fuck the strippers.

Soul: Rio. The favelas beset by the tourist areas is a real reminder of how much of the world's problems is a battle between the haves and have nots. Rio is real. The US hides its problems. Brazil puts them in your face.

Let me know of anything else you want to consider.

Ipanema is the first choice. It's safe, upscale, not as crowded as Copa, the most popular beach is there (Posto 9) and it has great logistics (btwn Copa and Leblon). The Arpoador is also there. Lots of chicks passing through as well. Just a great place to be.

Leblon is the most upscale out of all of them but too reclusive (and the people there want to keep it that way). I would compare it to Coronado in San Diego. They have a nice mall though and some decent places to grub. A lot of the high society live there. I would check it out at night but I wouldn't stay there.

Copacabana is too urban for me. It's a good place to stay for logistics but Ipanema is much more pleasant. It also has like 6 or 7 favelas so it's the least safest of them all. Most of the lodging in Rio is there however so it's the most accessible place. I'd stay there if I couldn't come up on something in Ipanema but try to stay in the part closest to Ipanema.

Barra de Tijuca is nice. A really good club called Nuth is there. Good place to go on Sundays. But it's not the best place for logistics because you're on the other side of the mountain from Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana.

Miami is definitely better than anything in Central America, no question. As for South America, I don't know. Venezuela is well-known for its beautiful women (lots of Miss Universes). Colombia is also bringing heat. Argentina has some damn fine women, especially Rosario and Cordoba. Brazil does as well. With Brazil, you have lots of racial mixing over its history so you see many very exotic women.

I was mainly talking about going out. The Real to the Dollar is 2:1 right now. Going out in Rio is definitely cheaper than Sobe. When you factor in cover charges, drink prices, etc Rio is MUCH cheaper.

Yeah I have no doubt about this one. Cariocas (residents in Rio) are very serious about their fitness game. Gyms are everywhere and people are always working out on the beach. They have a gym literally on the beach near Posto 10. Calisthenics stations are everywhere. They even have a sport they invented called footvolley which is basically volleyball without using your hands. You can only use your head, chest or legs. Anytime I've seen people playing this they were insanely ripped. I'm talking 8-packs, forget about 6.

Split decision. I still go with Rio because Brazil is diverse like the US as well and they have FAR more racial mixing. Many supermodels are Brazilian and those genes that gave birth to them have made their way to Rio. Rio is also the center of Brazil's television and film industry. There's also a huge market for sex tourism which attracts a lot of high end tail. Rio still wins. The girls are more accessible than Sobe as well.

Nightlife, easily Miami. Miami is one of those spots like Vegas and NYC where clubs go off til' the am and there's stuff to do many nights out of the week. Rio isn't like that. They have that California 2am thing going on. Venues are hit or miss and they just aren't as organized. Rio is also very casual. It's not the place to wear a suit. You could probably get into most places wearing nice looking gym clothes, no lie.

Sao Paulo is far better for nightlife. It's a work hard, play hard city. They have lists, covers, specific venues for different niches, etc.

As for art/architecture, Sobe wins hands downs. Lots of the buildings in Rio are rundown or antiquated. Not too many modern structures. The Art Deco section of Sobe is nice. Rio's strength is its spectacular natural setting, not the architecture.

Interesting, i have been to florida and california before, and this post seems familiar with the Socal/Miami eternal discussion. For me Socal blows Miami out of the water, i would like to see how it measures against Rio de Janeiro..

No problem man. It's really apple and oranges though. Rio is a great place to visit and is one of the most unique cities in the world. Rio has more to keep you busy and stimulated than Miami. Most people get bored of just partying in Sobe after a few days. Rio is more complex. Even Mixx seemed to be tired of Miami and spent a lot of time going back and forth to Colombia. He was always warning guys against moving to Miami long-term.

What Miami does have going for it is the convenience factor of living in the US (first world services), diverse latin (and european) culture, tons of chicks, and geographical proximity to many points in Latin America & The Caribbean. That makes it better as a "home base" if you have the mobility to travel around. Rio is better to visit though.

Yeah, so much of this comes down to perspective.

It depends if you are talking a weekend, a week, a month, 5 months or home base.

Each of those are different things and should be kept in context.

Also, a guy like Mixx was in Miami for 20 years or more. It is easy to get jaded on a place after that kind of time frame. Hell, I got jaded with California. Whereas someone on their first week in Santa Monica or La Jolla might be doing backflips.

Also, I don't think Mixx had ever been to California, whereas I have and that is what I compare Miami to.

So that perspective is very different as well.

easy, i liked miami a lot but i felt that it was a city that didnt offer too much to do or see. Socal has much more to offer IMHO...

As for the Miami Beach vs Socal comparison, MB would get old quick whereas Socal has enough other things going on to keep you occupied other than going to the beach and partying. Even just geographically, Florida is a boring state. No mountains, no hills, no variety in scenery. No real outdoors culture. Wanna go skiing or mountain biking, good luck. Cali blows Florida out of the water on all fronts other than nightlife and ease of access to Europe/S. America.

I agree. Not to derail this thread, but California is the coolest state by far. No state remotely comes close. Miami definitely gets old quick. I'm pretty much burned out after 3-4 days in Sobe. The main thing I don't like about CA is its isolation from the rest of the country and the world. You've got to spend at least a few hours on a plane to get anywhere.

Also, Rio is most definitely a required stop for the international playboy. Very necessary. Top place in all of Latin America.

And South Beach alone destroys CA on the girl front. South Beach alone destroys whole California cities and whole California counties, not to mention a similar sized equivalent. Hell, the Publix, the Whole Foods and airport in Miami alone destroys whole cities in California.

Unless you need to surf or ski everyday CA, makes zero sense. And Miami is a pretty damn quick plane ride to Costa Rica or Panama for that.

But the thing is, South Beach is the ONLY thing going on in the ENTIRE state of Florida. I mean nobody here is talking about setting up base in Tallahassee, Orlando or Jacksonville. Socal has 3 major cities worth visiting in their own right and Vegas is right in our backyard. Plus a lot of smaller but cool towns like Santa Barbara, Napa, Santa Cruz, etc. The isolation and distance "from everything else" is a downer, but it could be worse. Try telling that to our boy Kona. Now that's isolation.

Anyway, not to derail the thread. Having been to both Rio and Miami, I don't think there's any comparison in overall experience. Mardi Gras might be the closest thing in the U.S. to a good night out in Lapa.

Given all the love G Manifesto throws to Miami it's not a surprise this thread turned to SOBE vs RIO real fast. I've said many times on RVF South Beach in the winter is fucking amazing.
