The issue of childhood obesity has become a strong talking point for many in recent years, with organizations set up to help introduce school-age children to better exercise and eating habits. With technology moving as quickly as it has in the past decade, kids need guidance more than ever on how to put down the MP3 players, tablets, laptops, and smartphones and get active.

When obesity sets in at an early age, it’s especially important to change certain habits in order to keep lifelong issues from developing, such as diabetes. At 189 pounds, 9-year old Breanna Bond was bullied at school and facing health problems when her mother stepped in and changed the entire family’s day-to-day activities, as well as their diet.

“Everybody at school would call me names,” Breanna said of her bullies. “They would call me fatty, they would call me fat head.”

That soon changed, however, with daily walks and the introduction of a treadmill into the family’s routine. Breanna also changed her caloric intake and watched the amount of fat she was consuming, resulting in a 66-pound weight loss. It has truly become a lifestyle change, and led to Breanna joining school sports rather than being left out because of her size.

“She is an inspiration to the world and all children who are having weight issues across America, that you can do it with a pair of tennis shoes and motivation,” her mother, Heidi, said. “It’s totally changed the course of her whole life.”

Yeah, really. When I grew up I'd never heard of "fat acceptance" and if I had, I definitely would've called bullshit on it, even as a kid.

I'd say that at my elementary school, 19 out of the 20 kids in class were of normal size and all of them routinely picked on the fatty.

I can believe the anti bullying campaign didn't step in and put a stop to this shaming. Then she could have gone on to live to the ripe old age of 30. I wonder what all those campaigners think about bullying and the harmful effect it has had on this poor girls life. I mean now she can play sports and probably grab male attention. This is an outright atrocity, how do they sit by and allow someone to improve themselves.

I remember the fat kids being real nice and friendly because they knew people wouldn't stop fucking with them if they weren't. I'm sure it's completely different now days.

This just goes to show that getting and maintaining a healthy weight starts at home. If a kid is fat then 9/10 times it's the parents' own fault.

Childhood obesity isn't as serious as most people think. The years of puberty can cause most girls or boys to lose 50-60% of their body weight in no time at all.

I'm sure the fatties pick on kids of average size these days.

Reminds me of a stand-up comedian wondering when exactly peanut butter became "the most dangerous food substance known to mankind" (as he put it). He also had a bit wondering when exactly kids with asthma became the majority and not the minority.

This is true but there is a threshold where things get out of hand. Her 66lbs lighter still puts her 30lbs or so above her healthy weight. At age 9 I don't even think I cracked 100lbs and I was hovering in the 90lbs range. She weighs as much at age 9 as I did as a grade 9 Football player.

I had the same thought earlier. If she previously weighed 189 lbs. and lost 66 lbs., that puts her at 123 lbs. I probably didn't weigh that much until age 13 or 14, minimum.

Inspirational. And reactions from fatties are as hilarious as always ("she encourages other girls to have body image issues"). I sure don't think that she should have been bullied for being fat, but anyone who presents her weight loss as something negative is an idiot.

In my opinion, the only women who should weigh 190 pounds are chicks 6'5 and above.

I was fat in middle school and it still motivates me as an adult to stay fit. Fat shaming works.

But then again by today's standards I'd be considered skinny compared to all the honey boo boos these monsters are making their kids into.
