Teaching English abroad is probably the easiest way to find employment abroad, and probably one of the least profitable ways too.

Bright side, for the slacker and hustler alike, is that it affords you ample free time.

What kinds of side-hustles have you guys teaching English abroad successfully used to up your income, or even transition out of teaching English into another field completely? Import/Export?

not if you are a proper teacher. takes over ur life-meetings, preparation, marking etc etc

Hustle is such a stupid word/term.

A side-income is the same whatever main job you have. Simply put, if you can start a business which isn't full time it doesn't matter what you do 9-5.

And you can pretty much do anything as a side-business.

If you're teaching English, odds are you're decent at writing English. Writing articles on a contract basis is a tried a true location independent contract gig, but can be a little grueling and the entry level pay rate isn't spectacular unless you're good at selling yourself and finding the right clients. Beyond Borders dropped some intel on this. Someone else did a while back too I think but I can't find the thread.

I did this for a little while after college and charged way too little so I kind of burned out, but it wasn't hard to find work on sites like warrior forum, wickedfire, digitalpoint, and there's always the freelance sites.

No idea how ESL courses are taught, but do you give writing assignments? Could be a way to outsource some of the work, hah. You'd be editing them for corrections anyway, right.

Come on man, this is a total non-response that adds zero value. Teaching english abroad is a common trade for guys here looking for ways to live internationally and making money isn't always going to be as straight forward as it is at home.

What do you do for side income while abroad?

OP, I've heard of guys selling things on eBay back to the states. I believe livingthai.org has a guide on selling things on eBay from Thailand.

That's a brilliant idea. If you could assign your students each different topics, you could make an extra 100 bucks or so a week doing that. You would also have to verify the articles aren't plagiarized, but that's cheap to do, and it would also make you a better teacher in being able to stop plagiarism.

Not to rain on your parade here but teaching English is probably the most profitable thing you can do while abroad. Also the easiest with the most opportunity.

You will be overloaded with hours to sell, if you teach privately you can expect around 80 bucks an hour... your main side hustle should be scouting out single women and looking for a quality wife. Having a woman in said country opens up tremendous opportunities for you. I know all the married guys here have side jobs that bring them big money. You can't function in most countries without the proper visa though, so an ESL job is usually your first priority. If you are not a native speaker in said country, expect to be taken advantage of and swindled constantly. Your best line of defense against crap business people is your secretary...erhm wife.

One of my friends whom I met at EF, got a girl pregnant in his first week in China. He was a door to door salesman in the UK and said the most he ever managed to make was 400 pounds per week. He was pretty stressed about it but the girl was really nice and they ended up getting married a few months later. Now he lives in her hometown with her and his daughter, because he has links to the UK he was able to import baby food to sell to the locals through his wife. I think they bring in an extra 5000 dollars a month that way. Without his wife and halfie child, the Chinese would NEVER buy from him. He makes about 1500 bucks a month through his school and their monthly expenses are kept to about 700 bucks. She cooks, cleans, brings the kid up and runs the business on the side.

My wife is the same way, I get super cheap deals on stuff when I'm with her that would otherwise cost me double to ten times the price. There is a lot to be said for making your wife your 'side hustle', she will probably save you more money than a business will bring you, introduce you to opportunities you never knew existed and if your business partner fvcks you for money, it will likely be in bed.

Chinese wives for a better life, do your part, join the PRC!

ESL provides you with a lot of time to think of any other side hustles. Come to Saudi Arabia and you'll have nothing to do but think of ways to make money to get the hell out of here....unless you tap into the underground scene, of course. In all honesty, try to find an ESL gig that'll provide you with extra time to get your side hustles in order. Or you could follow BadWolf's advice on getting a wife in your host country along with learning your target language. It opens tons of doors along with the legs of more women.

Personally, I've been building a few websites, trying to make a bit of extra money off Adsense and Clickbank products. Nothing big so far but working on pushing it further.

Also, planning on building an eBay store with outsourced products from various freelance websites along with creating auto-blogs for others.

Maybe crawl around through WarriorForum for some random inspiration of other things you can do.

As for hustles. Teaching something other than English perhaps. A lot of ESL students have a background in a completely unrelated field that may be useful. Eg. Lawyers could tutor US bound lawyer hopefuls to prepare them for the LSAT.

I got a buddy who teaches english and scuba diving on the side. I think it took him 2 months to become certified and he did it while he was in central america. So now when he takes off for a year at a time he gets a teaching job and a scuba instruction job. He mainly travels in central and south america doing this kind of work and he doesn't even know a lick of spanish. It is hilarious when I meet up with him and he usually has a couple months head start on me and he still barely knows the basics by the time I get there.

Put 10 kids in a 'classroom' and charge each ones parents $15 bucks for the hour. I'm located in the mainland, the people who learn english privately can afford to shell out the big bucks. English is expensive. What would you pay for an expensive starbucks coffee or a pizza... a gourmet pizza in the main land? Its 100 rmb here for a pizza. Foreign/Imported goods and services are expensive.

This is only really possible with kids because everyone and their mother HATES teaching kids. I suppose in the comfort of your own house it might be a better deal...but 8 kids... yuck. A typical class consists of you playing boring games with flashcards and then yelling the word on the flashcard at the top of your lungs. If you can stomach this kind of sh1t on your days off then you will probably make bank. The kids teachers are typically the highest paid and the most in demand. 300 rmb seems to be the going rate for teaching adults per hour... thats about 45 bucks. Usually the schools pay enough so that you dont have to do extra work on the side...theres nowhere here to spend it anyway... once you've got a woman, apartment, computer and video game system... what else do you spend your money on? Anything that I don't spend on food or rent now just goes right into the bank.

Another 'hustle' would be to recruit teachers for interviews. I get 15 bucks for every teacher I find and recommend to the school. Usually I just approach every white guy I see walking through the railway station.

Private lessons are the main side job for most teachers. If you are REALLY good at getting lessons and schmoozing with CEOs then you can recruit a bunch of people and pay them on their days off to work a couple classes for you. I use to teach in Brazil for a guy who ran a 'school' out of his house. He hired me out to his private students and would pay me about 35 bucks a class, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Later, I found out that he was charging 100 bucks per class for the students... I was still happy though, got tons of work from him. He absolutely loved money, also drugs...which is what eventually sank his business. If it weren't for that, he'd probably be making crazy $$$ right now.

Private lessons are a great way to make extra cash because you are selling your time... and if you teach adults, usually a lesson consists of talking to someone about what they did last night, thier bf/gf or a movie/videogame they played recently. In my current job, I talk about sports/games/whatever for a 45 minute session and make about 25 bucks. I also do kids classes....ugh. Having game really helps here because you can basically just run game on a woman for 45 minutes and get paid for it. At least all of this studying hasn't gone to waste right.

If there are any advertising agencies around you can try freelance writing.

Some people also freelance for media (like writing news stories and stuff), which is how I got my start. I ultimately gave up on it because it was a pain in the ass and didn't pay well enough to justify the effort, but some people seem to get a thrill out of seeing their name published.

You have not been, zillions of Chinese are uber rich and wealthy.

Most likely Shanghai or Beijing, never seen so many luxo shops and luxo cars as in China, they have bags and bags of money, love bling, and spend spend spend, no recession in China.

EVERY luxo brand has China to thank for saving there ass during the GFC

Over the years i have been, early days they moved around on push bikes, they are all gone now, its min. a scooter, car or limo

Well worth a visit, God knows what the joint will be like in 10 years time

You are right. I haven't been to mainland China, only Hong Kong. I should get myself there sometime to check it out, but so many places to go.

What do you and ^^^ Bad Wolf think about teaching something other than English? Like tutoring people for the LSAT (in China) for example. I'd say the stakes are much higher (potentially ivy league vs university X) so people would be prepared to pay more for this kind of instruction than ESL. Though obviously the market would be much smaller.
