Western Men Should Really Take More Risks
Being a man and not taking risks makes no sense.

It's almost a contradiction in terms.

It almost seems like it would be better to die than to live the beta 9-5 lifestyle, just because that kind of life is such a disgrace to the notion of masculinity.

I must qualify this, though.

I think a man can be a beta and live a reasonably happy life as long as he admits that he's a beta and doesn't claim to want anything else, sort of like a eunuch.

RE: Western Men Should Really Take More Risks
I'm sure that just about every man that's ever fought in warfare wouldn't mind being a 9 to 5 beta. Maybe it's just me, but anyone thinking that it might be better to die than to hold a steady job has probably never had to face death.

Have you ever had bullets whizzing over your head? I have (though not in a warzone), and it's fucking awful. Even if you don't believe in God you start to pray that if He lets you get home safely, you'll become a fucking monk, if He just lets you LIVE. A 9 to 5 job looks really nice when you're hunkered down in a creek bed being shot at.

I also don't understand your implication that a man working 9-5 is automatically "beta" (Jesus, what an overused term). And to automatically label a man that works a steady 9 to 5 job a "eunuch" is just sad.

Life is about ensuring that you make it tomorrow. If you can do that, you increase your odds of passing on your genetics. History has shown that the majority of risk takers are men that come from less than ideal backgrounds.

WTF? Why are 9 to 5 jobs Beta? It's just the most convenient time to work, not a sexual connotation.

I see what he's getting at. I never had a job I liked. The last five years I spent in a drunken haze too much of the time so I tolerate a day job, and could reach the point where my passive income meant not going the same place every day and do what someone else wanted me to do.

There is definitely something about working for someone else, about having some kind of "supervisor" telling me what to do and noting whether I made it into the office at 8:58 or 9:03 that I hate.

So I dropped out of that world and work for myself.

We can tell ourselves "It's just a job...I just do this to pay the bills..." but there is a certain personality (me) that hates being controlled by others. For me, it's a grating, soul-killing experience to work for somebody else.

I worked 9-5 for a few years and didn`t like it, now I work 12-16 hours a day, outdoors at a very physical job and much prefer it, especially since I only have to do that for 5-6 months each year then do whatever I want.

I agree with Scotian, and also with the OP. I think the work very hard, play very hard lifestyle is much more agreeable to the male temperament. The problem with 9-5 jobs is that they provide you with very little time to pursue big goals, whether they be productive, debauched or anything in between.

Just like there's a lot of talk about how to make the workplace more female friendly, I think we need to have a discussion on how to make it more male friendly too. Women with kids may want half day jobs. Many men, especially unattached men, will want half year jobs, so they have a block of time to pursue other interests.

Our standard of life is higher than ever before. When people get comfortable, they stop taking risks.

I would take more stock into that statement if it were coming out of the mouth of Richard Branson. I don't know the name of the man you are talking about, but I doubt he's put his life in any real danger. Anyone can take financial risk if they can afford it. The worst that happens in you wind up in some shelter or on a soup kitchen line. Not exactly the definition of bravery.

RE: Western Men Should Really Take More Risks
The problem is that we used to encounter risks all the time. Now, we have to seek them out, and so our idea of what's actually risky has changed. Working in a factory where your arm could get maimed, or a coal mine that could collapse used to be normal professions for men. Gruesome wars that affected large swaths of the population also happened more frequently. What's the biggest risk for a Western man now? Driving? Cigarettes? Drinking? What's considered risky now isn't even a real question of life or death, only a theoretical risk.

When you say risk, what exactly do you mean? Are you talking about taking physical risks, or simply trying new things in terms of career? Or both?

What I learned from this post:

A homeless drug addict is more of a man than me, since I'm just some poor schmuck trapped in a soul crushing job.

I'll keep that in mind while I go on a mini vacation this weekend.

RE: Western Men Should Really Take More Risks
Not all risks need to be death defying. Starting a business is a huge risk. Quitting your job and going freelance is a big risk. Traveling in South America for six months is a risk.

And yes, men are defined by risk-taking. Anytime someone invents a new gadget and applies for a patent, he's taken a risk. He's invested in an endeavor and applied himself for years. Because it's almost invariably a man.

I agree in that I think it is a natural instinct within men to take risks. I think that these days most blokes have evolved to not feel that need however some of the more primal among us still need to chase that buzz.

RE: Western Men Should Really Take More Risks
Ahaha when it comes to risk men are far away from the real risk we use to face. Since we got out of the food chain, we onl experience man made fear.

It doesn't really matter if you are a low class beta or a top Alpha, the truth is most of us don't really experience fear like our body is designed to.

True we have crazy wars everywhere that would test a man's fear.
But only a very few get to experience that.

We are like a bunch of mouses living in our extremely safe glass box and don't have to worry about being in the food chain anymore. The only fear we experience is when other mouses want to fight or some other thing like that.

There used to be a time when we were chased by saber tooth tigers, we had to protect ourselves at all times from whatever beast out there that saw us as food.
When you went to sleep at night you had to be sure to sleep with your legs spread apart so a huge snake could not try to swallow you alive.
You also had to wake up the next morning, find food without being killed and explore your territory for any rival tribe trying to get your shit.

Today the thought of approaching a women bring fear that many can't handle, the fear of rejection, the fear of failure. Why is that? Because we are animals who have been taken away from the real toughness of nature.

If a man had just spent his day hunting a beast 10x is size while at the same time looking out for a creature that could also be trying to eat him . Fought a couple of other tribes off his territory, pushed around some of his tribe members to show he is not weak.
He also might have to redo it all the next day, the last thing on his mind would be fear, fear has become a part of him.

So yes we do need more fear because it is part of our process. Nature created us with it and by removing that aspect of our lives many men do not become men, they become weak betas always complaining, not taking their lives in their hand and get humiliated by women who are just following their nature.

boredom is evil

Only women desire drama for the sake of drama, men are free to pursue strategies that mazimize their success and happiness.
