Once you have gained some knowledge with home study i recommend traveling to cental america to take private lessons, because they are dirt cheap! I took classes in nicaragua, honduras and el salvador, and usually you´ll pay $6 hr for privates. no joke. I heard guatemala is good also. I was in san juan del sur, nicaragua, last year, and i took a week of classes for 2 hours a day, and i improved greatly, there are a ton of cheap hostels there also. just don´t expect to be the only gringo, it is packed with them, which can take away a bit of the experience, i admit.

Have any of you guys tried the language hacking guide from http://www.fluentin3months.com ???? seems interesting, the guy speaks something like 8 languages fluently (I can say his French is excellent) and he was a unilingual anglophone until he began learning languages at age 21!

Check out this site its quite interesting! (I saw it posted on here a couple months ago somewhere).

I have used books for Verb Conjugation, attended classes, taking private lessons from a tutor etc etc Apps on I-Phone. My Vocabulary is getting higher and I can speak much better then I can understand Spanish.

Listening Comprehension is what I need to work on, Watching movies, tele novas in Spanish might help. I was recommended this site by a friend , looks promising, thought I should share .....

What is the best way to just get vocabulary? Especially Latin American. I have an app on my phone that is great but a lot of the vocabulary is for Spain Spanish. So sometimes when I say things in Spanish to my latino friends they are like what? Then they tell me what the correct word is. Most of the words are correct but there are some that aren't. I hate studying words that are wrong.

Just talk to your Latino friends. Force yourself to engage in convo in that language. It will hurt your head for about a month and a half and then something will pop and you will find it easier to speak in the target language. If you get headaches and fall asleep prematurely, it means it's working.

I've been using DuoLingo.com to learn Spanish the last 4 months. It's a great free startup. Rosetta is way overpriced. So is Pimlseur but I use the Pimsleur audio I use when I'm exercising. I also have started listening to more music in Spanish and watching Spanish movies.

Another cool website is FluentIn3Months.com. The guy is an inspiration for learning languages.

I'm also trying to use my friends who are fluent to practice and am making language exchange partners (sólo chicas, claro) on the internet who are in latin american countries to practice Spanish with over text and skype.

I thought I'd bump this thread to see if anyone knows of any new apps to learn Spanish. I started Spanish 2 months ago. I do it for about 30 minutes a day - wish I could do more but I work long hours so that's all I can devote on a daily basis.

I'm about 1/3rd through Duolingo. I find it very useful. But it gets a bit monotonous. It would be great to have another app or two to mix it up a bit. I tried the Michael Thomas app but didn't warm up to it.

I think Duolingo is good - especially for building vocabulary. I find Michel Thomas better for developing a secure understanding of grammar and sentence construction.

I bought the Michel Thomas Complete Spanish CD box set which was quite expensive, but the whole thing seems to be on youtube in a playlist at the moment. If I were you, I'd save the videos though, as these sort of things are often removed before too long.

Thanks for responding so quickly. Do you remember when you bought the CD Box set? I listened to the first 10 minutes of the video you embedded and it is identical to first lesson on the Michel Thomas app that I downloaded a few weeks ago. The app was free. I'm a bit puzzled because they seem to be giving away the store for nothing. Perhaps the competition is high so they can't charge for the app and the CDs don't sell any more?

I also like Mekorig's idea of creating a practice group but I would suggest that it be stratified (beginner, intermediate, advanced etc.). Otherwise, beginners like myself will slow down those who are ahead.

I think I bought it online a couple of years ago. I'd guess it's still on sale there, as I saw it in another book shop only yesterday.

I'm not sure about the app. Perhaps they're only giving away the lessons up to a point and then you have to pay, once you're hooked? It would seem strange to give it away as I'm sure it still sells some.

Of course, the best way to learn a language is immersion. If you get to a decent level you will the come on leaps and bounds when you're abroad chatting to lovely latinas. Two birds, one stone!

I completed Level 1 of Pimsleur Spanish but then switched to Learn Spanish Like Crazy, it is much faster and engaging compared to boring Pimsleur, on top of that it is South American Spanish.

Get Easy Spanish step-by-step by Barbara Bregstein, it is an excellent book for anyone trying to learn Spanish.


Key here is in managing your expectations, don't expect to become fluent using these programs and books BUT they will give you good foundations

Has anyone used an online tutor?

I'm having trouble with studying consistently. Weekly skype sessions with a tutor would commit time and money to this, while also increasing speech experience.

I use 121 Spanish (121spanish.com). It's $15 - $18 for 55 minutes, depending on how many classes you prepurchase, and the tutors are from all over Latin America and Spain. The company provides the booking and payment engine and you use Skype to communicate with the tutors. I'm highly proficient already and I use it primarily to practice before traveling to a Spanish speaking country rather than an every week sort of thing, but I've been a satisfied customer.
