La Nuit was the cologne I wore when I wanted to attract cougars. They loved it.

I finished my bottle of Comme De Garcons. I got a lot of positive complements on it, but I'm changing my cologne everytime. May go with another bottle of CDG with a different scent, probably the Kyoto Incense or this Zagorsk:

I wore drakkar noir in high school. That was 25 years ago.

I bought Acqua di Gio back in '97/'98. I could never get into it. I know it's hugely popular, but it's not for me. I've got the nose of a bloodhound, so smell is an insanely powerful trigger for me. It triggers memories of drinking lukewarm beer, hangovers, and sleep deprivation.

I bought Armani Code back in '02 when it first came out. I was lost in those days and dealing with difficult stuff. I bought because they had discontinued my standard. Bad move on my part.

In '99 I first read about Tweed GIT, and Acqua di Parma in an issue of GQ. Searching for this stuff in those days was a chore. I lived in an area that lacked "high end retailers." I found a bottle of Acqua di Parma. I bought it. I wasn't impressed. It smells old IMO. I may still have it upstairs. Reading this thread just now reminded me of Creed GIT and that it's available nearby. I may have to check it out.

I started wearing emporio Armani back in '99. They've discontinued it and brought it back a time or two. I always thought it had a unique smell that I liked although I have received few compliments. For the most part, over the past ten years, I haven't worn any.

If someone made a scent that smelled like fiberglass layup, creosote, ocean water, with hints of leaded non detergent gasoline, I'd be inclined to buy it. I'd probably just huff it and live in a state of childhood nostalgia.

Just got Burberry London. Wasn't impressed to begin with but its scent has grown on me. It has this kind of manly, kind of feminine twist. It starts out with a tobacco and leather type of smell then evolves into a soft, powdery smell.

Just bought another bottle of La Nuit, like the last two it's watered down compared to 2013 and before, like 25% as strong and lasts maybe an hour. At this point I'm about to just shill out the $300 or so for a vintage bottle on Ebay. :/

Timely.

Recently used up the last of my bottle of Obsession, which has been my go-to since about 1998 I think. Wary of buying more of it, though, as I've developed this suspicion that it's the 2010s equivalent of Old Spice: overplayed, tacky, the easy choice for those with little taste. But damn, I love that combination of vanilla and citrus, and it smells right on me. Most others I've tried carry a faint whiff of disinfectant or cleaning solvent even at the end of the day, apart from Obsession Dark and Gucci Sport which I wear but am not crazy about.

Suggestions for alternatives?

Someone up-thread mentioned how you should wear it. I was taught to spray directly onto the skin, as it will mix with your natural smell and form something unique (which means experimentation, since what you think will smell good on you might not), and being under your clothing will moderate it a bit.

My current cologne stack:

Calvin Klein Eternity Intense - great scent but doesn't last at all even if I slather myself in it.

Lacoste Intense - more musky, rather masculine, lasts a bit longer than CK

Drakkar Noir - old school classic that has good staying power. People hate on DK but I love it.

Cool Water - scent is not dark enough for me but the scent sticks to your skin and lasts all day.

What I wear at the moment:

• YSL La Nuit De L'Homme (parfum) - great fall/winter scent or for a breezy night. Powdery type masculine smell, but very pleasant. I've gotten compliments from friends and girls on this one. Good projection/longevity.
• Creed Aventus - I bought a decant and let me tell you this scent is the shit! A "Smokey-Pineapple" is the most notable smell I can relate it to. I only wear it on first dates, or special occasions. Never fails to land a compliment -- seriously. Good projection/longevity.
• Reyane Insurrection Pure II - My daily scent. I heard it's an Aventus clone so I picked it up. It's pretty close but not quite as sexy-smoky. I'd say it's like a soft Aventus. And this scent has weak projection, longevity is decent. But hey it's really cheap. 1 on each side of the neck before I head out in the morning.

Cool Water by Davidoff - Heard it's a Creed Green Irish Tweed clone, maybe somebody who has tried both can confirm or deny this?

Got a sample of Tuscan Leather by Tom Ford Signature from Nordstrom. This scent is insane - lasts forever and transforms from crackwhore's cigarette ashtray covered leather couch to a softer raspberry scent over time. It's pretty crazy, I'm going to be honest, scent made me nauseous at first but it grows on you. I'm not sure if I would use as a daily driver, it's like a Trump card. Only for use when going balls to the wall.

I've never bought cologne before, and need help making one decision before purchasing four bottles to start off. I can either buy:

1. 6.8 ounces of Dior Sauvage, or
2. 2 ounces of Dior Sauvage and 4.2 oz of Dior Homme Cologne.
I've tried both on my skin, and love Homme Cologne, but Homme Cologne isn't as well liked by others as Sauvage. Dior Homme Cologne smells like a lemon at first, but immediately starts its hour long transition to smelling more like grapefruit, with a nice shaving cream (with a little bar of soap) smell. After a couple hours, it starts smelling increasingly like a clean white musk, and at about the fourth hour almost purely smells like that musk. After about three hours, it has a strong silage (you can smell where I've been). The fragrance gives at least an eight hour performance (on my skin).

Any advice? If it helps, here are the other fragrances I'm planning on: F By Ferragamo Black, and Mont Blanc Individuel.

IMO, Dior Homme is a better choice than Sauvage. Regarding Ferragamo Black, you like it at first but it is a very intense and sweet smell that will repulse anyone in near vicinity, so stay away. I used it a couple of times and never got a compliment.

The colognes I like and owned in descending order:

1. Creed Aventus -- This is the pinnacle of perfumes and will never disappoint on any occasion.
2. Dior Fahrenheit -- A classic that you put on when gaming cougars. It smells like leather and gasoline but is very refreshing.
3. Voyage d'Hermes -- Very good perfume for warm weather. It has a very unique smell that will stay in your nostrils for a long time. Plus, it is not as widely used as other perfumes.
4.Fuel for Life by Diesel -- A sweet smell that is not too sweet.
5. Versace Pour Homme -- An alternative to Acqua Di Gio or Cool Water.
6. Bleu De Chanel -- Can serve as a replacement for Aventus if you are on a budget.
7. Drakkar Noir -- When in doubt put on Drakkar Noir.
8. Acqua Di Gio -- Great scent but too overused.

Right now I wear Paco Rabanne 1 Million. I always get complimented when I wear it and it stays around without being overpowering.

Before that I wore Polo Blue and Kenneth Cole Reaction.

Thanks speculator, I'll stay away. I appreciate it Kieran. I did't like the smell of Dior Homme EDT, but I'll try it again. About Sauvage, I haven't tried applying fragrance to anywhere but my wrist, and the result was a little overwhelming to some, so I put on a sample spray of Sauvage on my chest today, and couldn't smell anything, so I put on another. No one could smell anything. I was wearing an undershirt and suit though. I was desperate, so I even asked a woman who gave me a hug if she could smell anything. Nothing, unless she put her nose right up to my chest (awkward).

This has taught me two things:
1. So this is why people usually apply more than one spray. I'll need more fragrance than I thought.
2. I'm a massive noob. At least a little more experience, learning, and asking questions will be necessary before I buy anything.

I'll go back to square one with deciding on a first fragrance. How should I spray the Sauvage sample?

I picked up a sample of this on a weekend trip to Hong Kong a couple years ago. It blew me away. By the time I got home, even after a shower that evening, it still lingered. It's all I used for two years. You're right about it being heavy, though. I ended up grabbing a bottle of Tobacco Vanille for lighter occasions. I still mostly wear the Tuscan Leather.

The thing I particularly like about musky/smoky parfumes is, due to their concentration, the scent will sink into your clothes, especially outerwear that doesn't get cleaned often, and become part of your signature scent. It's especially noticable when you find something that matches your body chemistry and personality. People literally know when YOU have entered the room, and not in that "he bathed in a vat of cologne" kind of way.

DH EDT is generally the best regarded one from the DH range. Cologne has a lower intensity and is more suited for like wearing to the office etc.

With regards to number of sprays, It's something I've wondered about as well because you want people to notice, without it being too much. I've settled with putting one on my lower neck at the front just below my adams apple, and one behind each ear. I tried putting one on each wrist too but I felt like it was too much.

My current lineup:

Bleu de Chanel - all-around crowd pleaser. Can't go wrong with this one.

Perry Ellis Code Red - Very underrated. Resembles Acqua di Gio and garners tons of compliments for me. Best part is you can get it mad cheap, around $20 I think.

One Million - Sweet and a longevity beast. Good for clubbing, nights out with friends, and when you're actively gaming.

D&G The One - my favorite scent. Every girl that's smelled it on me has loved it. It would be the greatest frag of all time if it weren't for its poor performance and lasting power.

Thierry Mugler Pure Malt - recent purchase, I love it. Boozy but probably more suitable for hot weather.

Givenchy Play Intense - Coffee-ish scent. Very pleasant fragrance, bitches love it.

Kouros Silver by YSL - Interesting frag but definitely an acquired taste. It was an impulse buy for me and can't say that I love it.

Eau D'Issey Pour Homme - Lemony, aqua scent. Another acquired taste, I have not received compliments on it. May be more suitable for older, 40+ dudes.

Nautica Voyage - one of my favorite aqua scents. Super cheap and gets me compliments more than any other fragrance.

Yep I've had Sauvage for a few months now too and I'm finding it difficult to find the right amount. I usually just do one or two sprays. And although personally I love the smell of it, I don't think I have been complimented once on it. Frustrating.

My other is the overused Aqua Di Gio. I am trying to get away from it but I was complimented on it so many times. I even had a girl way back in March tell me she loved the smell because it "reminded her of being 17 again and in love". So that is an advantage of using these old stand by colognes. If you can tickle that nostalgia brain clitoris, then you're already 75% in the door.

Was out and about today and got a sniff of drakkar noir. First time I've smelled the stuff in 20+ years. As has been mentioned already, people hate on it. I think it has to do with being such a heavy throwback to the late 80s/early 90s. Its a decent smell. There's a reason the stuff still occupies the shelves at many department stores.

I also took tried Creed virgin island water. Think coconut and lines. The lime comes on strong at first but gives way to the coconut. It's definitely a warm weather scent and possibly a bit feminine. It smells like the lobby at The Post Card Inn in st Pete beach. Not something I'd wear on a Saturday night in January. It's definitely a warm weather scent.

I'm a creeds user. I like it.

They used to make one called Burberry weekend, and I loved it. But no more. Those discount places have it sometimes but I always wonder if that shit is somehow a fraud.

Every time I've looked at stuff from those discount places, I've noticed shit like the seals broken on the packages, and that the stuff always smells weak, like it's been cut.
