RE: What are you listening to?

I figured I'd listen to Metallica's new release - and of course, on principle, I torrented it. Banana

It's not half bad. Death Magnetic tried too hard to recreate their first four thrash albums, I think, and was only 75% successful. This has the commercial feel of the Black Album (and the better parts of Load/Reload), but some thrashy grooves are thrown in there to keep that old spirit alive.

Overlong, though - it's just under 80 minutes, and I have trouble even sitting through an album that's an hour long. (The perfect length is around forty minutes, I think - the LP record could only hold so much music, and kept artists on a leash. Unless they wanted to take a risk and release a double, or, god forbid, triple LP set.)

So far I've only listened to the hits and a few album tracks and I'm pretty confident it's going to be stuffed with filler.

RE: What are you listening to?
Why does it sound so... slow?

Compare it to even this random-ass megadeth track, from the period in their career that they all try to forget, and it sounds like everybody in Metallica is playing inside a giant vat of molasses.

Easy - because when it comes to technical precision and speed, Megadeth ALWAYS beats Metallica. This is even more pronounced in 2017. (Metallica's albums are more consistent; that's the only edge they have on Megadeth. I guess Mustaine's not a very good singer, either, but Hetfield's only decent himself.)

At this point in Mustaine's career, he can still melt faces with his guitar solos. Metallica, no. They're too old and it shows in their music.

RE: What are you listening to?
That's an interesting theory. I hadn't considered that he might just be too old. Does guitar skill really degrade like that?
I mean, Mustaine put out the greatest metal album ever, "United Abominations", at the age of 43 or something, and that was after a career of brutally mistreating himself along with terrible and supposedly near-permanent nerve damage.

I still think this, for example, is among the top five songs ever written.

RE: What are you listening to?
It probably depends on the guitarist and how talented he is. Mustaine's one of the greatest metal guitarists of all time, Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield were just very solid I'd say. (Their dead bassist, Cliff Burton, was the real savant of the band.)

Mustaine can still outplay Hammett after years of reckless drug abuse, and after that early 2000s arm injury. That's impressive stuff.

Don't judge me but for the past two weeks I have listened to this song at least 4 or 5 times a day... Something about some of this chicks songs draws me in an doesn't let go.

Same thing happened a few years ago when I found this song from Grimes... its still in heavy rotation.

Confused me too. Well, this one in particular. There are some truly magical moments in this video.

I've been to many concerts and festivals and seen a lot of amazing artist. However the one that really stands out is when I saw Girl Talk live.... the energy at that show was crazy, plus its such a diverse mix of music. I'll never forget it.

RE: What are you listening to?

Based Wisconsin talk show host Mark Belling (occasional substitute for Rush Limbaugh) had this playing on his show today. Great stuff - spooky. I should get more into Procol Harum and their side projects.

(Procol Harum is one of those late 1960s groups I always overlooked because they sound like prog-rock but aren't. As much of a soft spot I have for Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull, some of the progressive rock groups like Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer could be pretty unbearably overblown.)

RE: What are you listening to?
Ever since the Max payne 2's credits lead me to them , Poets of the fall has been an on and off guilty pleasure of mine as I have a soft spot for gothic aesthethics.
Though I havent listened to their stuff in a while I just stumbled on their latest music vid.
I am positive that whoever makes these clips is a big game buff.

In this the latest clip , look at the Singer's persona:

Compare with the Harlequin character from Shadowrun returns:

And in my favorite vid they've done so far , Carnival of rust:

The face paint and general aesthethics (aside from creepy circuses being a trope) are suspiciously similar to those found on the "Circus of Fools" level in the old school game Sanitarium

Lyrics in this are great.

God, Family, Country. The three things in life worth fighting for. Except for God; all are dead. Now it's just me, the road and God. Don't know where it will lead, but for right now...
May there always be a road!
