For those of you who are looking to get the new Kindle Paperwhite, I just received mine today. Costs 119.00.

For starters, I already love it. I had the basic kindle before and I loved that too.

I also bought the case too. 39.99. Magnetic close and turns the Kindle on when you open it and turns it off when you close it. Convenient. Doesn't add too much bulk to it either. Fits in the hand ok, not great, but ok. Probably won't fit in your pocket anymore though.

I never really noticed this before, but having the lit screen actually makes a big difference. Even in just regular light I think it makes it easier to see the screen. Some of the reviews on Amazon said that the LEDs on the bottom cast a shadow in between the lights. They do, but it is pretty insignificant. More noticeable in the dark, but still insignificant.

The light is supposed to be a big deal because it is shining down on the page rather than shining at the reader like a tablet or computer screen. If you spend a a decent amount of time reading it will definitely be easier on the eyes.

Battery life is supposedly 8 weeks based on 30 minutes of reading a day, wifi off, and light setting at 10. Having the light at 10 is a little dim (recommended for low light setting) and I think 15-20 is going to be the normal range. Even so, pretty crazy battery life. The basic Kindle was supposed to have a battery life of 1 month so it is supposed to be an improvement even with the light.

I think the paperwhite is a little faster than the basic Kindle. Not so much that you really notice it though.

The paperwhite is a little bit heavier. Still pretty light.

Screen responds to both touch to turn page (touch the right 75% of the screen to go forward and the left 25% of the screen to go back) and also to swipe gestures.

It has some cool features like touch and hold can easily bring up definitions of words, you can access information about characters of the book, highlight and save phrases (I think you can post them to Facebook or twitter, not sure, didn't link my Kindle to my FB account), and pull up information about the author.

The homepage gives a photo of the book cover rather than the basic just giving a line of title and author.

Overall I think it is awesome. I ordered it a few weeks ago and it was on backorder, but it arrived weeks before the initial scheduled delivery date. If you have an older Kindle and you primarily read during the day in good lighting then I don't think it is necessary to upgrade. The touchscreen is nice and I think the light makes even daytime reading easier, but 120$ is still 120$.

Man they put out new models like every 3 months. I just recently got the new Kindle Touch so I won't be upgrading for a while, but the paperwhite does look like a nice improvement.

I may sell my kindle 3g for this. I'm always looking for a light source. Is the construction still solid? And is 3g still free and usable in multiple countries along with the "experimental" browser?

Do they only sell these in the USA and on Amazon? ... Been looking for one for ages...

3g model is 179. It says free 3g and works globally. There is still an experimental browser so I'd assume it works the same. I have the wifi model so I can't account for the above.

It is a little heavier than the original kindle so I'd say it feels a little more solid. Normally I don't buy cases, but I bought the case for this one for the open to turn on and close to turn off so I'm not to concerned with the construction.

I believe they are going to be sold in stores. Everything on Amazon is backordered so I have no idea when they will be in stores. I think I heard WalMart will no longer carry Kindles too. As I mentioned though, my initial delivery date was Nov 16-29th and I ended up receiving it on the 3rd so who knows what the schedule is exactly.

As far as out of the US, no clue. Not familiar with Amazon and international shipping either so you'd have to research that on your own.

Currently only in the US from Amazon. If you wait several months, Amazon should release it internationally.

Evidently you can only web surf over wifi. This guy found a work-around to do it over 3G.

Reading on a kindle is way fucking different from reading on your phone. I've had my Kindle Touch for many months and have no regrets, have read way more during this time than the last few years. It's a completely different experience.

I'm a bit peeved that the paperwhite came out already, but expecting shipping to Australia to be delayed for another few months. Right now i'm comforting myself with the sour-grapes notion that reading in the dark is probably bad for your eyes anyway >.>

I have a Kobo Glo with the same technology, because I did not want get sucked into the Amazon ecosystem. It is a pleasure to read so I highly recommend an e-reader with backlight LED.

P.S.: Use Calibre (freeware) to manage your epub ebooks. There is also a plugin to convert DRM-Amazom books to epubs so I can still buy books on azon if needed (e.g. Roosh).

I have downloaded a lot of ebooks that I read with FBreader on my computer. I assume it's easy peasy to transfer those to the kindle. Here's hoping I'm not wrong.

Yes, it is easy to transfer any kind of ebook to kindle. Just use Calibre to convert them to the .MOBI format that the Kindle supports. There are a lot of plugins for Calibre out there that can remove DRM if needed.

I am considering buying one of these.

Is the 3G functionality worth the additional $? I did check that my area is covered (you can check at http://client0.cellmaps.com/viewer.html?cov=1 ), however not sure what does this mean, does that mean free access internet even when no wifi present or that i can download my books stored on "the cloud"?

I also heard that the original Kindle is better than PaperWhite with page browsing as it is easier to do with the buttons than with the touchscreen.

A forum member ordered the Kindle Paperwhite for me and send it to me in Europe a few months ago. (Thanks again buddy)

Easily one of the best purchases I did last year. Enjoying it a lot.

Currently reading a few books on screenwriting. The screenplays I converted from pdf aren't showing that well but a screenplay has a weird format anyway. I can use my laptop for that too.

You can order a Kindle to Europe from amazon.com without issues.

Anyway, I've had luck with k2pdfopt in making PDFs more readable on Kindle.
