Kindles are great. I own two of them, a dirt-cheap Kindle Fire I got for 35 bucks over Christmas, and an old kindle keyboard. Probably 80% of my reading (of actual books) is done on either of these.

I have a few tips for optimizing Kindle usage.

Emailing Stuff to your Kindle
1. You can go into your Amazon settings and manage your kindle. Books are more easily managed and deleted here. To email books and documents to your kindle ->

Go to "Manage Content and Devices", click the "Settings" tab, and you should be able to find your "Personal Document Settings halfway down the page. Right there is the specific email address of each kindle. For instance "[email protected]". You can drag and drop documents and have them emailed to your kindle via wifi.

Make sure to update your Approved Personal Document Email List!

You can also use Calibre to convert PDFs to .azw format. That way you can zoom in and out though some of the formatting might be lost.

Send to Kindle App
2. You can install an app on your computer or phone to quickly drag and drop stuff right into your kindle. For instance, MikeCF's Fit Juice books went directly into my kindle with this app.

Sometimes I print really good blog posts straight to PDF and drag and drop via the app. It's great.

Comparisons
3. My ghetto old kindle keyboard gets way more use (in terms of hours of reading) than my new kindle. The battery hardly ever dies. PDFs and books emailed to it are all in one place, as opposed to the Kindle Fire, which has a separate documents and downloads tab (annoying as fuck). Newer isn't always better. If you want the best e-reader on the market, get an old ass kindle keyboard before they all disappear.

Is anybody familiar with writing notes on the kindle? I'm figuring this out yet. Still using a pen and paper to take notes.

Yeah, you can back them up on an SD card (or even on the regular storage but since there's only 8gb it's not a wise move). I have a copy of "The Mist".

It's only good for 30 days (presumably to prevent piracy? licensing?)

Just click on the video in the Prime Video app, and right below "Watch Now" is "Download".

The Fire is a tablet.

Kindle with a keyboard, Paperwhite, and Kindle are ebook readers. They display text with e-ink.

Just trying to point out the difference. Kindle's are the shit.

You should use Calibre as a library for all your books. It has an additional DRM-removal tool if you want to share a book with family, for example. PM me and I'll send you some more info on it

Edit: There is an extension for Chrome called "Send to Kindle (by klip.me)", which easily sends articles to your kindle directly

Are there anyone who has a good way to get the notes you have taken from books on the Kindle paperwhite on to your computer?

Calibre is a good way to manage your torrented books.

Kindles (minus the Fire model) are great. They use e-ink so it's just like reading on paper.
-Battery last many weeks
-You can have dozen (or hundreds) of books on your device
-Read under direct sunlight
-It's lighter than an actual (physical) book
-With the Paperwhite model, you can read it at night.

I use Calibre to organize my ebooks. The most known formats are PDFs (stay away from them), ePub (best ones) and .mobi (Amazon format).
The problem with PDFs is that it is already formatted. If you try to convert it to ePub or mobi (to read on your iPhone, tablet, kindle, etc) you'll find plenty of errors. PDFs are for printing.
If you're not going to buy from the Amazon store, look for ePub format elsewhere. Copy to Calibre and convert to mobi (takes seconds) and you can transfer to your kindle without any formatting problem.

I love my old Kindle. Its the one with buttons but not the keyboard, I think I'll buy the same model if I need to replace because I don't like the new touchscreen ones.

Reading on airplanes, trains, and buses is much more convenient with a Kindle. Even a small dead-tree book would feel unwieldy now.

I love my Kindle Paperwhite. If you sign into your Amazon account on your laptop and go to the e-book section of the store, you can go to any category of books that's there and then filter the results by price. There are hundreds of free books and sales to be found. Also the daily "Best Seller" section has the 100 top best paid & top best free, so that's another resource for deals. You can also view your Wish List using the price filter and see when there are major price drops or a book becomes free. (These things might sound obvious to some people but I've been amazed at how many people I know who have just never explored these features on their own and needed me to explain that they existed). Just loaded a few movies for my trip. Super easy actually. Not all movies that are free to watch on Prime can be downloaded but close enough.

I have a Kindle Fire HD that I mostly keep on my end table to stream shows while I'm winding down to go to sleep. I haven't been able to get my head around a single function device, but I know people who have Kindles and love them. I usually keep books on my phone or iPad.

Also use Calibre. Great program for storing books and pdfs. I keep my Calibre library on OneDrive. I'll have to play around with converting from one format to another more.

Anyone know how to get notes from a .mobi file on a Kindle Fire off? Not an Amazon purchased book; those are on your Kindle page. But a .mobi you acquired outside Amazon, transferred to the Fire, and read and highlighted there.
