Chemicals that smell fishy are generally amines and basic. You can get rid of the smell quickly with a small bit of acid, start with citric acid, then step on up to acetic (white vinegar/apple cider vinegar) if it's really bad.

In terms of telling the chick. I've successfully approached it with a LTR by asking if she'd been to her OB/GYN recently. Totally played it from a health angle and she was cool about it. She got a cream that fixed it right up.
