The Red Wings and chukkas are good suggestions. Boots are one of those things that are worth investing in as they should last you a very long time. Part of buying a pair of leather boots is waterproofing them with mink oil and other synthetic options.

I just got these Thousand Mile Boots from Wolverine in the Rust color a month ago and they've been awesome this fall. Perfect on the motorcycle, in the rain in the Northwest, hunting, they can dress up a bit but are right at home in the most casual environments too.

Nordstrom and Zappos both have free shipping and returns. Not sure about Nordstrom, but Zappos even has free shipping both ways. So you can order a few different pairs, or sizes, and send back what you don't want and get your money back.

Resurrecting the thread since I dont like starting a new one for a simple question.

Why would you wear shoes over boot in any circumstance (EXCEPT WHEN ITS HOT/going boating/pool party)?

People on this thread and this /thread-23838....light=boot
have offered excellent suggestion for boot. I used boot and shoes myself but nowadays I just dont see why you would wear shoes over boot, unless its hot or you are taking a cruise on a boat, or are wearing shorts (but shorts generally dont look good on guys anyway)

From my experience, today's boots can do everything shoes can. Some dress boots are even sexier than dress shoes and are entirely appropriate for tuxedo events. And boots have the following advantages:

-Better construction.
-Much more comfort due to the above.
-Some are very convenient to take on/off with a side zipper
-Masculine as fuck
-Height boosting effect without being too obvious
-Warm as fuck
-Tough motherfucker. If you ever need to run in a dress boot, its entirely possible though not recommended. I broke a good pair of dress shoes once for hurrying to catch the train, but my dress boots been through some shit and still walking fine.
-Versatile due to the above
-Usually cheaper than shoes everything being equal. No idea why

Of course its hotter, but for a lot of people living in NY or Europe I dont think its a problem.

Is there anything I should pay attention to before going full on boots?

For those of you who are not brand specific or wanna save some money Target actually has some pretty nice boots for super cheap, granted you get what you pay for in terms of quality but last year I got a pair of suede boots looked almost identical to those maddens on first page of this thread. Obviously overall quality was a bit lacking but I got some on clearance for like $16 they lasted almost a year before heel started falling apart and that was probably since htey were a size too big and I walked a bit improperly in them. I've seen some other pretty sharp boots there as well. Didn't have any fake plasticy leather either I believe it was real suede I think merona. okay found a pic, I think mine were maybe a diff shade but pretty similar

I can't do boots with heels. Even not very big heels cause me to have all sorts of toe pain.

Any good flat-soled boots to recommend that can stand up to rain and snow and still look good in an urban environment?

I spent like $300 on some leather boots which just soaked up all the rain and snow last winter, and hurt my feet. Retarded.

I've been rocking these Cole Haans for the last month or two. They're very versatile because of the neutral colored suede, but attract attention because of the colorful sole. They're a great way to dress up an otherwise fairly neutral and conservative or classic look like black slacks and a black shirt. You can also get them in some other colors. And, super comfortable...



You can buy these at Nordstrom Rack for $60-80.

My co-worker wears Ariats and he says they're great, so that's what I'll be shopping for. I don't know if there's anything special to them like buying a size smaller or anything...

I just got some LL Bean engineer boots which are rebranded Chippewas. They seem decent, though I haven't fully broken them in yet. Kind of a pain to put on since they use eyelets all the way up. They have an old-school look to them which I like.

Love these boots, William Lennon 'Traditional Work Boot'. Wore these across Dartmoor, in South Africa and in Nepal. It's a poshed up combat boot basically. They're hand made in Derbyshire, and still made on the same lasts they used to make army boots in ww2.

Sizes run large to accommodate winter socks, and are slightly wider than usual. They're not as comfy as dedicated hiking boots, but they'll definitely last longer. They make various different boots, even with hobnails, but most of them are the same shape as these. These are the cheapest at £110, which you just can't beat for boots made in England.

Got some kick ass wingtip brogue brown boots. They go up past my ankle.

I'm short, so is it better to pull the boots over the jeans military-style? Look masculine but the boots height eat up almost 2/5 of my leg, so I have the impression it makes me look shorter.

Or should I pull my jeans over them?
