2. Mosul- Yep, pretty dangerous. Used to go up there back in the hey day.

3. New Orleans- Used to work in LA, and made weekend trips over. Place has some rough areas.

4. San Salvador- Has gotten worse. Shame, cause if it was safer I'd be there now. Confused

Well that all I got on that list. Have been all over Iraq and Afghan though.

Ali, you are light weight staying in the DR so long. Get down to Brazil razz So you can triple that number fast.

Brazil is starting to peak my curiosity. Need 3 more months tightening up my Spanish, and probably 3 to get down some basic Portuguese. We'll see.

Interesting stuff, especially looking at smaller cities. For example, at a 2009 murder index of ~115 Knoxville TN is in the top 5 dangerous cities in the world by this standard.

looking for a new signature.

None. Zero. Nada. I'm chicken.

It's a wonder how all of those cities are more dangerous than Baghdad and Kabul. If this is accurate, Brazil, Colombia and South Africa must be really fucked up.

It should really be called the 50 most dangerous cities that you would consider visiting.

While driving to California, me and my friend stopped to get gas in Ciudad Juarez. Is that the same place as Juarez?

Nuevo Juarez is the border city with El Paso. Been there pre drug war.

RE: 50 most dangerous cities in the world
I've been to

Maceio, Brazil (Number 3) - booked the tickets and hotel first, then found murder rate stats - highest in Brazil.
Medellin (14)
New Orleans (21)
Salvador, Brazil (22)
Baltimore (48)

I am surprised that there aren't many African cities on the list, except for South Africa, one of the most developed African countries. What's up with that? I thought Africa was more dangerous than Central and South America. My friends traveled to Kenya and told me it was extremely dangerous. In Africa, I've only been to Egypt (Cairo+coastal towns), but I guess that doesn't really count as Africa.

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea has always been renowned for its lack of safety, and I didn't see it on the list

5 for me...according to this list, which may not be that accurate in the 1st place. Detroit, St. Louis, New Orleans, Curitiba, and Belo Horizonte.

Bullshit list. Nairobbery is not on it, nor Baghdad, nor Kandahar. Since they have some small municipalities, how about Ramadi or Baquba, too?

I've been to 7 of those on the list - did not feel threatened in most of them.

Just because a bunch of gangsters are killing each other in a place does not make it dangerous to the average resident or traveler.

No surprise that these cities are a mayor part of drug trafficking.

Spent a month in Medellin and maybe two in Vitoria, Brazil.

Regarding Africa, this list is going by homicide rates. War related violence isn't counted here. Though I've heard places like Caracas are more dangerous than Iraq was during the war at some points.

Lived in Guatemala City and San Salvador. Guatemala wasn't too bad, some guys did try to rob me but it didn't work out for them because I figured out what they were up to before they got a chance to do anything.

San Salvador though, I vividly remember everything shutting down at sunset because no one was safe after that. Cab drivers would charge double in some areas of the city after dark.

If you are going to impose your will on the world, you must have control over what you believe.

Surprised to see Medellin so high up there, thought it had stabilized since the 90`s

Yea, Iam also putting in question the accuracy of that ranking, I can see some places in Africa like Nigeria higher than places in South America.

Colombia isnt that dangerous anymore, at least less than Brazil.

16 US cities foreign governments warn their citizens about.

The ones you expect but still interesting.

Music RE: 50 most dangerous cities in the world
Hmm... anyone know what these symbols are that I have pointed a big black arrow at? They are the 'back' and 'next' buttons.

I get them appear on my 12" netbook on the new fucked-up Yahoo mail but now noticed they are also here on this article on my main 17" laptop.

Seems very odd that I would see them on 2 different computers and two different websites.

Any web nerds know what the fuck is going on?!

Thanks!
