Gonna bump this thread instead of making a new one, my question is pretty similar.

I've decided to make the move to the oil sands and from what I've read its best to have your own car, preferably a truck because you're more hireable.

In my area trucks + SUVs are dirt cheap (you can get a brand new truck for 20k). I'm looking for something that will do well in the cold, offroad, and will hold up traveling for long road trips. I like the look of the older model trucks (80s/90s), but a guy at work was telling me early 00s are well made.

Either way, what would you guys suggest for a ~$5000 budget (honestly, this thing would only have to last me 6mths until I start stacking oil money and can get a newer model or something that fits the lifestyle I'll be living). SUV suggestions are also welcome.

You dont really need a truck, a car would be fine. $5000 will get you shit for a truck. But if you only need it for 6 months..... than $5000 could do you.

4x4 is not necessary unless it will be a work truck, which I doubt you would need. Though it is more fun.

A front wheel drive German car is much safer and reliable on the highways as well.

I had one of these. I loved it, but I spent too much time wrenching on it and I swear the fuel just evaporated out of the tank. A pig on fuel. But you could get one for $5000.

Pick up a nissan 350z if you can afford to run it. Its what I drive, I picked mine up fairly cheap.so far its cost me nothing to maintain but its pretty costly on the fuel. but to date its been the most impressive car towards girls. The sound , the look is damn near a porsche 911. its interior is full trimmed napa leather. its got a DVD player, steering wheel controls and all the other things that have a girls underwear slipping off before you get them back to your place.

I was going to suggest this because it is an amazing car, but you likely aren't getting that late of a model for under 10k unless it has a ton of miles on it.

not as good in terms of power and spec but inside there isnt a huge difference. I prefer the styling of the 350z to be honest. however a 350z will cost you half the price of the a 370z and girls will still think that youre driving a porsche.

Avoid the 6MT 2006 350z at all costs (they have the oil burning issue due to improperly manufactured piston rings). The 5AT 2006 cars are fine.

If you can swing it try to get an 07-08 350z. You wont regret it.
