Observation of American Blacks in Argentina
What are your observations on how African Americans are treated when they travel to South America? Im going to Argentina for the first time in the later part of this year and Im wondering... How are Americans (especially African Americans) viewed in Argentina?

It's been discussed already pretty extensively in a few different threads, search back. I was never treated with any rudeness. You should be okay. I've spoken to a few black women that have been to Argentina and they get pounced on by Argentine guys. I wish the women were like that too.

RE: Observation of American Blacks in Argentina
Race is a touchy subject, to put it mildly, in almost all Latin American countries. However, depending on where you go the issues are different. Brazil is incredibly diverse, with a huge degree of racial mixing. As a general rule, the whiter you are, the richer you are - yes, there are exceptions, but overall race is a good indicator of social class.

Argentina by contrast is probably the most homogeneous country I've ever been in (blacks make up about 0.1% of the population). It is incredibly rare to see a black or Asian person, and any non-whites I met were foreign. None of them complained of any racism, either overt or discrete, but that's not to say they didn't encounter any problems there. I went out one night in B.A. with a group including one black American guy, but he was pretty quiet and didn't approach, so I can't say from personal experience how Argentine girls react to black guys. Nobody gave him any hassle though. I also met a really good-looking English black girl in Brazil who'd been to B.A. and she said the Argies were all over her in clubs etc.

There are tons of Asians in Argentina...there's even a mini "China town" in Buenos Aires.

I didn't see Chinatown when I was in B.A. No doubt there's a significant minority, but compared to the Chinatowns in places like NYC or London it would probably be quite small (correct me if I'm wrong though).

The most common minority I saw in Buenos Aires were mestizo and/or indigenous S. Americans from poorer countries like Bolivia. There were certainly quite a few particularly in working class barrios like La Boca.

However in many other neighbourhoods or the city centre, there were many times I was walking down the street and literally everbody was white. Where I live is far more homogeneous than the US, but in the bigger cities it is still normal to see people of Pakistani, Indian, Chinese or Afro-Carribean backgrounds. There is a more noticable presence of Asian people in Scotland or England than in Argentina.

I don't know about "tons of Asians", that's pushing it. I don't recall seeing a single Asian during my week and a half in Argentina. You're probably talking about a fraction of 1% of the population. Keep in mind though that Chinese people are EVERYWHERE, which is one benefit to being 1/4th world's population. Even in the middle of Africa, there's Chinese people.

I know that we all know at least 97% of Argentina is white. I misspoke saying that are "tons of asians".

In anecdotal terms ,I saw asians pretty often when I lived in Buenos Aires. Of course in the Chinatown, but also in other places ranging from asian owned grocery stores, hundreds at the immigration center, some friends of friends who are asian, etc.

RE: Observation of American Blacks in Argentina
I had a black friend visit Buenos Aires as he really liked it. At a club, chicks crowded all over him wanting to dance bc they thought he was a stylish Brazilian dude but in reality was American. These were testimonies from peers we know as I have never been to Argentina.

I also had a Sri Lankan friend who looks kinda Latin too. He apparently killed it down there while doing a graduate project for ASU, but was also sort of a muscular pretty boy type who loved playing the Asian card.

My other friend who was Eastern Asian like me...did not kill it down there however, haha. I still wanna go badly.

RE: Observation of American Blacks in Argentina
Not to say that people are welcoming everywhere, but Black Americans need to get on the plane with their luggage, but leave the racial baggage at home.

People are curious about you because for them you are exotic. They want to touch your hair, your skin, and the women assume you're suave with tight mouthpieces and magic sticks. Moreover, you are not like the disenfranchised Blacks in their countries -- if they have them. You are the most educated and richest Black people on the planet. You fought for what was rightfully yours. Meanwhile, other people hop on boats and planes as soon as they can to get away from their oppression, instead of fighting it. Civil Rights changed the whole world. Without that, people like myself would not even have the opportunity to come to the U.S.

The level of racism you experience in a country where your voting rights have to be extended every 25 years by Congress, will pale in comparison to anything you could possibly experience in Latin America -- just don't live up the stereotypes that your society has created and diffused all over the whole world via movies and hip-hop.

Just so you know, the national hero of Argentina is a Black man named Antonio Ruiz. That man and many other Blacks like him helped fight for their country's independence from Spain. In Buenos Aires, there is a statue erected in his honor.

One of the main reasons there are no longer at lot of Black Argentines is because of manumission. They made Blacks fight in their wars for their freedom, unfortunately very few actually survived to experience it.

The reason you hear about Argentina being so tough for gaming is because there's no white boy worship down there. If you really want to know what a lot of those girls like, come to Miami and go to a Dominican club like Tipico, and on some nights you'll find more Argentinas in there than you will Dominicanas.

RE: Observation of American Blacks in Argentina
I've heard mixed reviews. Some black dudes said they were showered with attention from women. Personally, in my week there I was not. I thought I'd at least be getting a lot of stares from people given how homogenous Argentina is but I didn't even get stared at. I felt I was treated with benign indifference. Argentines that I met there and abroad have never really struck me as hostile and racist people. What racism they have seems to mainly be directed at indigenous Bolivians, not blacks. So I think a black dude can probably do well there if he's spending some time, making connections and putting in work. I wasn't there long enough to do much of this and frankly I mostly hung out with other English speakers in my hostel in between sight-seeing. I'd love to sometime give AR another try though and do things differently. Only thing is Argentine girls aren't known for being easy lays so I don't know how much a return on investment you'll get from a short trip. YMMV.

RE: Observation of American Blacks in Argentina
In South America, the racism is usually on a white - native scale rather than a white - black scale. Hence the word "Indio" being a common insult. This applies in Spain also, who don't have any colonial guilt. The exception to this seems to be Brazil, which from my experience with white Brazilians in Europe, seems to be almost post-racial. That said, I'm sure the political elite in Brazil is white, but I mean to the average Brazilian, race is not an issue. They're very much Brazilian first, and probably Catholic second...and their race is probably 10th or something!

But yeah, Argentina is a white European country, perhaps not in the USA-WASP sense, but it's almost like it was picked up from Europe and dumped on another continent. I'm not sure how racist to black people it is, but I know the Spanish (as in from Spain) are a fucking hell of a lot more racist than Brits are. I had a few Spanish mates in Uni, and some of their remarks shocked me. I hate political correctness, but I didn't feel comfortable with that.

Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. - H L Mencken

I haven't seen much blatant racism towards "American Blacks" in Argentina, more curiosity than anything else. Much more racism is directed towards Bolivians, Paraguayans, and Peruvians. They will probably assume you are wealthy and that you are from Brasil.

Interestingly, Argentina is not 97% white.

Argentinians are mixed. Onn average theyre 79% white, 17% indigenous, 4% African.

Thats much whiter than the South Americna average. In South America it really is rare to find people beyond recent immigrants who arent mixed. But being relatively lighter than your neighbors there makes you "white" there.

Dont tell an Argentinian this. Ther self conception is that theyre basically all white. Hearing a foreigner challenge a national myth theyve belieged all theor life wont go over well, probably. But its interesting to know anyway

The double-standard with race never makes sense to me. Black Americans are about 80% African and we are considered black. But people who are nearly 80% European aren't considered white. If Argentines aren't white, then Denzel Washington isn't black.
