Yeah correct, they are belt grinders which makers use, not belt sanders. I am not familiar with English names for all tools and their accessories and I simply translate everything from Croatian where we say for both machines "belt sanding machine".

So how does the backing pad looks which holds these fibre types you linked? Are ceramic ones also mounted on same pad or you need a separate one?

Lastly, are you a sword maker or a knife maker?

I'd go 125mm- much better value for money than 115mm and is rapidly becoming the new standard in industry.

The ceramic backing pad needs to be fairly firm, as hard pressure is necessary for rapid stock removal and breakdown of the self sharpening abrasive. The best ones have a sort of ribbed surface, which draws air in under the fibre disc and help keep things cool:

I checked out today bow that will be featured in the bow building datasheet and it appears it got crack throughout the handle. I am not 100% sure yet how to go about this.

On one hand I think it doesn't matter. Area where handle transitions to limbs has crack but it also has lot of excess wood and when I remove this excess I will also remove crack there. Handle area where you hold bow (which also has crack) will lose the crack when I shape it fully at the end of tutorial.

On the other hand if crack goes over into limbs, then I am screwed. In that case I will have to post final part of datasheet where other bow (ash one featured on previous pages) will serve as showpiece.

That is what bow building is. Sometimes you work with nice "behaving" wood and surprises you like this as I don't really know why the crack appeared. I did same process many times and everything was always alright, like it was on the ash one. Sometimes you work with shit wood that constantly challenges you and at the end gives up and you get a nice shooter.

For what you are doing yes, rigid would be best. If I'm doing something like car bodywork, I will choose a more flexible backing pad.

Japanese waterstones are great for getting a really fine edge- it can become an all consuming hobby. I'm happy with the edge just a normal wet grinding wheel produces, as I lean towards efficiency and speed rather than a perfect edge. So long as it will cut normal paper I'm happy. Cutting tissue paper is a cool party trick but of no practical use to me.

I have a new grinding wheel coming for my high speed 8" grinding wheel. Cost me £160. It's cubic boron nitride- should cut cool, never need dressing and remove stock fast. I'm hoping it will be ideal for sharpening drill bits and wood chisels. Bit pricey but I'm fed up with cheap wheels that need dressing every two minutes and heat things up to quick.

What do you think of using washing machine electric motor for making a belt grinder? Construction would be pretty simple but I would need to find wheels for the belt.
Are your belt machine custom made by you or have you bought it?

This is a must do project for me as I plan to do lot of wood and metal work in the near future.

I had a new experience by volunteering at a community garden. Doesnt really sound manly, but youre planting food, meeting new people and working in the dirt so I felt good.

I did actually make a disc grinder by welding a frame and safety guards round a big angle grinder and wall mounting it, with a ceramic sanding disc on it. I'd be temped to make a belt grinder if I needed one.

I don't reckon a washing machine motor would be up to the task. Most belt grinders are 3+HP if single phase.

I would have to find it and check it out. Even though I said its a washing machine motor, I am actually not sure. So you say it has to be more than 3 HP motor in order to work? Any other special things related to motor, or wheels for belt, some kind of substitutes, etc?

I played 1 on 1 against an athletic 6'5" kid I met doing ball handling drills at the gym. I was completely outmatched - he beat me 11-5 then 11-0, blocking my three-pointers and playing above the rim (I'm 5'8"). I came back and won the next two.

His mom (also 6'5" ) who was watching us play congratulated me and thanked me for keeping his ego in check. She also told me he'll be playing D-1 ball next year for one of those schools that get a 15 or 16 seed in the NCAA tournament every once in a while.

Had to brag somewhere about this. I turned 30 last month and have been feeling a little bummed that I'm just not as quick or agile as I used to be. Felt really good afterwards.

Not so much manly as rather stupid but here goes the story:

Was wondering why people never swim in the close by lake, which addmitelly is quite swampy and so as its getting really hot I thought it'd be great to explore.
I came out of one shore with some weird flatworms clinging to my feet (strangely enough none got in my doggie) which I shaved off with my knife because it felt cool (not that I couldnt have plucked them out with my fingers).
People asked me if they were leeches and I said I wasnt sure since I saw no mouth, wikipedia article later I guess I am more likely to concede they were leeches but of a none blood sucking kind.
I also did my good citizen service of the day and removed a shopping cart that some drunken assholes threw in there 4 months ago, it looked like the shopping cart Davy Jones from POTC would use if he was a hobo...

Yesterday:

Planted a bunch of flowers
Drank lots of beer and mead
Grilled and ate steak and venison
Made out with some dude's fiancee in her car

Just got a baby copperhead out of the pool and sent him to the creek.

I did this work yesterday as I don't make anything on Sunday. Here is a throwing axe. Definitely not my best work, but also not the worst. Axe head was old and rusty and had slightly different look. I used angle grinder to bring it more in shape and to remove the rust.
Handle was made from European ash and its elliptical in cross section. This ensures proper grip. Handle length is 50 cm. Wrap is made from some twine, I am not sure if its hemp or yucca.

I definitely plan to make a tomahawk some time in the future. But I am not sure how I will make the axe head. There are couple of possibilities. First is that I use existing axe head (our thick and broad style) and reshape it with grinding and cutting wheels.
Second is that I make it with welding a separately made blade and sleeve together, than heat treat it. This is a bit of a easier method but not sure if its smart to do that.
People here tend to do axe heads that way, but they have a lot of more "meat" on them, unlike tomahawk which is very slim and lightweight.






This is the continuation of the work on the Ash bow featured couple of pages ago in this thread. Final drying was over so I removed the clamps and shaped the handle, cleaned the back, belly and edges.
I need to cut in string grooves and its ready for the tillering. Probably going to do that next week.

I said earlier that this bow had some "red alerts". I have removed a lot of those but one is still there. Its a brownish in color discoloration of wood. I am not sure what to make of it, but I bet if the bow breaks (God forbid) it will break there.
That brownish wood seems harder in consistency than the rest of the wood so maybe this will cause breaking. Not sure, we will see soon what happens.

I've started addressing the lack of interaction between guys in a different gym I've recently joined. Most seem to avoid each other, and are glued to their phones in between sets. I see the gym not only as a place to train and improve fitness, but also as a place for like-minded blokes to interact, share information and strike up friendships.

Because there is so little interaction, it makes approaching the girls in there very difficult as you stick out like a sore thumb. Therefore, introducing a more relaxed, friendly environment works in everyone's favour.

I've addressed it by simply going up to the biggest guys in the gym and striking up simple conversation. As I've often noted in gyms in the UK, many of the biggest guys are the most shy (often taking up lifting to become more physically imposing) and are actually happy that someone is talking to them. It's working like a charm so far and the atmosphere in the gym has improved noticeably as a result.

Today I shot a deer that was eating my garden directly in the asshole with a bb gun. Frankly I was surprised at my marksmanship. Now I feel like it was too easy, and the only true test of a hunter would be to shoot something in the asshole that could shoot you in the asshole back....Man....

Not me, obviously, but this man has my respect. The daughter should show him a little more.

Took my girl to a strip club. Got her a lap dance from a stripper she had a dance from last weekend. Escalates to Choking, finger sucking etc.

Drag stripper home with us. Throw them straight in the Jacuzzi with some bubbles.
