Book: The Glass Ceiling Delusion
Was listening to the radio this morning and the author of this book was debating against a feminist about the regulation that's being considered by the European Commission that there should be at least 40% women on the boards of public companies.

Here's a summary:

Quote:Women are right. There SHOULD be more women in senior positions and in the boardroom. But they need to recognise the implications of a simple reality: individuals are promoted to senior positions, not groups. So why are many women seeking to progress collectively through gender equality initiatives rather than through their individual merits? Talented women who reach the boardroom typically find such initiatives patronising. Some widely-held assertions about the genders in the workplace: - women's progression into the upper levels of organisations has long been hampered by overt and covert discrimination against women exercised by the men (and sometimes the women) already holding senior positions - the 'glass ceiling' - men aren't more likely than women to have qualities which make them fit for senior positions. Women, conversely, are more likely than men to have such qualities, including higher emotional intelligence, consensual decision-making styles... - more women would seek advancement if they felt inspired by more role models (but who will be the role models' role models?) A former business executive with over 30 years' experience in major corporations and business consultancy critiques 30 assertions about men and women generally and in the workplace - including 'the glass ceiling' - and finds them all to be variously delusions, fantasies, lies or myths. He reveals the real reasons why more women don't reach senior positions. More gender equality will result when more hardworking talented women recognise that to progress they will have to do so individually, not collectively. How hard can that be? Harder than beating the drum for gender equality initiatives, certainly, but possibly more effective too? Corporations pursuing gender equality initiatives are engaging in a social engineering experiment which could prove ruinous both for them and for society at large. Militant feminists - a small but vocal band of angry women embracing a Marxist ideology, as the book explains - are behind campaigns for gender balance among senior executives. Why are corporations trying to placate a small band of angry Marxists? The book reviews the state of gender equality legislation in the United Kingdom where David Cameron, a Conservative prime minister and head of a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats, has enacted 90% of The Equality Bill (2010). The Bill was the crowning glory of the career of Harriet Harman, a militant feminist Labour politician.

No wonder society in the west is on the decline. Placing people into positions not because of their worth but because of their gender is wrong. I can go on about affirmative action and it will open up a can of worms. Hiring practices that discriminate should not be tolerated. Yet the beta white knights are allowing this to go on. Damn politicians appeasing the woman vote.

For those women who are reading this post, create something. A company etc. open up a corporation and voila you are a CEO! Government positions are getting less ans less as with all the downsizing. Your best bet is to be creative and open up a company. Heck, even buy a franchise if you have no good ideas. A good franchise can make you a pretty penny.

It's insane that private businesses are being told how they should be run down to that level of detail. Shit, if it's better to have more women on the board let the shareholders lobby for it. We have perfectly good mechanisms for all this, yet we're legislating and wasting more and more money on enforcing it.

Telling people what to do, what to think, how much to pay someone and who they should hire is communism. You pay the person on what and how much they produce and their worth. It's a global market now. You think they got this let's hire women or this ethnic minority for positions that they don't necessarily deserve mentality in non-western countries? With free trade and the global market, western firms will be toast.

Just look at the grassroots level. The education system ( elementary and high school) are in shambles in the states, Canada and the uk. For example, Having policies of not holding kids back another year if they failed (elementary) and having crazy rules in order to suspend a child for misbehaviour bring everyone down. Teachers nd students get held back in progress in dealing with the trouble makers. Stupid parents also bring the system down. If I got into trouble at school my parents would not even question the teacher if I was innocent, just the phone call would be enough. Today parents want to be friends with their kids and parents second. These kids lack discipline. How is this future workforce going to look like? Coupled with this glass ceiling, affirmative action, no wonder firms are moving or going out of business.

It's always fun to point out to feminists that they need the help of these laws because they can't compete in a free labor market and that's just proof that they are not our equals.

Telling them that will trigger a flood of 'reasons' why it's not a level playing field.

Higher emotional intelligence? What does that mean? That they are more likley to break down crying in the board room and falsely accuse the CEO of fathering her unborn child to get her way?
