Aside from the politics in the article, retirement can be simple and quite affordable outside of the United States when planned properly. There is a whole world to look at. Also, if done right you don't have to wait for your golden years.

I have been to san juan del sur and there are nicaraguans living there who make $100 a month cramped eight to a two room house who eat rice twice a day a maybe can afford one new pair of shoes a year. Then foreigners come and plop down a million dollars for a house on the hill overlooking all the poor nicaraguans and they claim that they like the way of life down there and they "needed to get out of the rat race."" Hypocrites. These people keep their money overseas and buy hotels and houses and make themselves out to be "unmaterialistic" and only need "simple things in life" yet not one of them would ever come to central amwrica with nothing and expect to live and earn like a local

San Juan del Sur is where that American dude was before Nicaraguan officials arrested him and have kept him in jail now for some time. There was just a special recently on Anderson Cooper about his case and how the international community has been requesting the UN to put pressure on Nicaragua's government to set this man free. It's a fucked up story and has made me think twice about setting up long-term prospects in a foreign country.

You never know when some new government or any type of hater could just set you up and run your business and life into the ground. Foreigners are often easy targets for populist politicians. I know of two people personally who had their lives destroyed this way: one man in Panama during the Noriega era where his property was straight up confiscated, and another guy more recently when Hugo Chavez took over Venezuela. This dude's restaurant in Isla Margarita completely collapsed as did most tourism on the island.

This story was discussed in another thread. One or more forum members actually know the guy who was accused personally. I have studied his case a fair amount and it is clear to me that he could not have committed the offense and that the appellate court was correct in reversing his conviction and setting him free. That being said, I have read a great deal of information pointing to the fact that he seriously pissed off countless people in and around San Juan Del Sur way before Doris was killed. Many Nicaraguan people strongly disliked this guy and I believe they were merely looking for an excuse to screw him over. The lesson to be learned is when travelling abroad, always conduct yourself with dignity and respect and don't piss anyone off ever (except for maybe the women you are juggling). If you do that, you should reap the benifits of your conduct. If you disrespect people, act like a baffoon, and piss people off, you may end up being sentenced to twenty-two years in prison or worse.

I was commenting on the wrong guy's case. I was commenting on Eric Volz's case and Hencredible was referring to Jason Puracal's case. It wouldn't surprise me if the root of Jason Puracal's problem was the same as the root of Eric Volz's problem.
