I kind of put rap and hip-hop in two different categories although they are very similar and ultimately related, kind of like how there are different genres of rock music (punk, indie, grunge, etc.). Houston posted up some pretty good rap/hip-hop albums, I'm impressed, a lot of guys aren't hip to dirty south shit like UGK, 8 Ball & MJG, Three 6 mafia, etc., UGK's last major release the self-titled album is the shit, and 8 Ball and MJG's "On Top of the World" is a classic.

In order for an album to be a classic it's got to be good all the way through from start to finish, few albums live up to that, 36 Chambers and Nas Illmatic are two that definitely stand up. A lot of underground hip-hop heads hype up the album "Enta Da Stage" by Black Moon, but when I coped the album I was highly disappointed.

Next to 36 Chambers and Illmatic, you guys are leaving out one album that I feel is worth to be put into that category, "Moment of Truth" by Gang Starr, if you guys aren't hip to this album I highly recommend you purchase it.

Another few albums that I think are classics, but I wouldn't put into the same category of greatest ever are Dead Prez "Lets Get Free", Mos Def "Black On Both Sides", Pharcyde "Bizzare Ride II", and The Roots "Illadelph Half life".

Some of the most slept on and under-rated albums include: Wu-tang Clan "Iron Flag" and Hieroglyphics "Full Circle",

We are all entitled to our own opinions, but I agree that Kanye West shouldn't even be mentioned when it comes to best hip-hop album, I thought his first couple albums were pretty good, but he dropped off hard since then, and is basically another pop music sell out at this point. I've been into hip-hop for almost 15 years and have played around with mcing, graffiti, break dancing, etc., sometimes I hear young kids talking about "Lil Wayne is the greatest rapper ever" and all I can do is laugh.

Yeah, I'm the only one showing love to Down South and to the West Coast besides the stereotypical Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. I figured that's how it was gonna be though! Hell, I don't even think anyone said 2pac except me.

This guy is in the top 5 best lyricists of all time, if not the best. Of course, he won't ever get the recognition he deserves because he's from Houston and actually does it for the love of the music. Been rapping since the late 80's.

It really depends on your generation and where you grew up. As an east coast guy who grew up in the 90's, that's where my taste is rooted. In Philly we got a straight injection for all the shit that was going on up in NYC. West coast rap to me just doesn't have the same story telling as good old golden age east coast rap. Snoop and Pac were geniuses, but I think as the quality of east coast Hip Hop eroded over time (as did rock in the 80's) you saw more shitty stuff allowed rule the airwaves, a lot from out west, a lot from down south. Not to disrespect all the WC fans out there. Music is all good to me. But the shit that's constantly on rotation in my iPod are:

Nas - Illmatic (highlight "The world is yours")

Eric B and Rakim - Paid in Full (highlight "I ain't no joke")

Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane (highlights "Ain't no half steppin")

GZA - Liquid Swords (highlights THE WHOLE ALBUM)

Raekwon - Only Built for Cuban Linx a.k.a The Purple Tape (highlights "Can it be so simple" and "Guillotine")

Biggy - Ready to Die (fuck Life after Death, this will always be Biggy to me. highlight "Juicy")

Ghostface - Ironman (highlights THE WHOLE ALBUM but "The Soul Controller" is probably the best example of Ghostface and RZA's dynamic sampling)

Tribe Called Quest - ANY ALBUM (fav. line "Yeah I took you out, but sex was on my mind for the whole damn route. My mind was all frenzied in a horny state, but I couldn't drop dimes cause you couldn't relate...you couldn't relate...you couldn't relate" love it lol).


The Roots - Things fall apart (highlights "Table of Contents" "Step into the Realm" "Dynamite" "Double Trouble")

I disagree. If this were a thread about greatest rappers, then you'd be right. Kanye is a mediocre lyricist. This is about the greatest albums, the whole package. And Kanye is absolutely one of the greatest producers in hip hop history.

Not only that, but anybody out there over 30 remembers around 1991 - 1994 a little shithead that loved to get on MTV and totally go unstable mental patient on interviewers, being a moody asshole and generally being or making fun of being a famous douche, by the name of Kurt Cobain. If you ask me, Kanye is just doing the same shit KC use to do, and ironically they're talent is very parallel. Kurt was a horrible singer and a mediocre guitar player, but where he shined was his song writing and melody composition. Kanye is a mediocre lyricist, but homeboy can go HAM on an MPC or any other sampler you put in front of him. If you ask me Kanye is the new KC. He drives a wedge right in the middle of his audience the way Nirvana did with rock fans, but he also has the ability to say exactly the way young people are thinking in his songs. Just like Kurt.
