Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to the thread. A lot of great music here. This is sultry as hell:

Some great Samba here, just found this group a few days ago:

They did a few covers of American/English tunes. These are a couple that I'm not sure I really dig stylistically, but well worth checking out:

Love Ceu. Saw her in concert a few years ago in the States.

My all time favorite Brazilian song:

Most Brazilians have no idea who she is. Actually, most Brazilians listen to pretty awful music. Guess it's the same story everywhere; just because it's popular doesn't mean it's good.

I'll try to return to this thread when I have a bit more time and post some of my other favorites.

I've been searching the Forum for a discussion of funk clubs, but haven't seen one, so I'll drop this comment here. Anyone interested this scene needs to check out "Via Show" which hosts live funk acts in Rio. I thought this place was amazing. Huge capacity, with eager and willing girls in abundance. Bring your hard-core caveman Brazilian game, because you will need it. It's a bit of a drive from Rio but if you've got a local friend it's worth the trip. Their website is:

I'm new to the brasilian music scene, but not really as I've always had my ear in tune with the soul of the brasilian music, and embrace all genres.

I will add my input on a song I feel many will enjoy, but it will also go over well with Brasilians.

Sergio Mendes - Mas Que Nada

Also, the Black Eyed Peas did a remix to it as well. I like both versions.

Every time I've mentioned this song to a brasilian girl, they are surprised that I know and like this song, and it DHV and leads to a better interaction.

I have always liked Grupo Revelação. My first Brazilian chick fucked my brains out to them one night. Banana

Surprised this has not been mentioned but Carnaval is on right now. A week of partying all over Brasil with the show stopper being the samba school parades io Rio, which is the greatest show on earth bar none coupled with the best party on Earth. Anyone in Rio currently? Anyone else watching the parades?

Found this old clip of Marisa Monte singing jazz from 1989, when she was 21 or 22. Definitely a nice piece, and I think it captures the beauty of the language well.

Time for a bump. I started this thread over two years ago and never mentioned Ivan Lins, one of my favorite artists. This album won two Latin Grammy awards, one for album and the other for best MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) album:

Another version of Comecar de Novo:

More great harmonica playing with Lins singing:

Another seminal artist I haven't mentioned on this thread is Milton Nascimento. I've been asking Brazilians for years who their favorite Brazilian artist is and the answer I get more than any other is Milton Nascimento. His music is new to me, but is fast becoming one of my favorites with music like this:

Here's a recent rendition of Travessia featuring Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter:

Another version featuring Sarah Vaughan on vocals:

If anyone else knows of any good Nascimento clips, bring 'em on...

RE: The kick ass Brazilian music thread
There's some great stuff in this thread, I've been into Brazilian music for years but haven't heard many of the tracks posted. Well done

Nobody has mentioned Cartola yet - one of the old school masters

Secos & Molhados - psychedelic, I recommend listening to this whole album, too many great tracks to choose from and a good variety of sounds

Tropicala ou Panis et Circencis, collaboration album, essence of Tropicalia music, I recommend the whole album since each song involves different artists - Caetano, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Mutantes...
Lindoneia makes me want to dig into Nara Leao's work, I bet she recorded some sultry songs in her day

last but not least some classic Chico Buarque

A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance.

A true friend is the most precious of all possessions and the one we take the least thought about acquiring.

Love this song and video. I've probably watched this video 50 times now at least. Old remake on a classic
