@Houston...for me, Sade is the definitive singer to turn on when the lights go out, even more so than Marvin Gaye, Isley Bros, Barry White, Maxwell, D'Angelo, Diana Krall etc. No one does sex music better than Sade, and its impossible to find her equivalent anywhere. That said, there are a lot of smooth, sultry Brazilian singers. I'll be posting some more videos of some of them as I have the opportunity in the next few days, but you may also want on your own to check out CeU (a couple of videos of her on this thread already, great shit), Roberta Sa, Rosalia da Souza, Maria Rita, Eliane Elias, Sabrina Malheiros, etc.

This is true. I am now a huge fan of Brazilian music, but don't be surprised if you're in a nightclub or bar and they play a lot of north american club music/hip hop. I was blaring every word to snoop dog/ Jay-z songs (like an asshole, I know), and was a signal to the local girls that I was something exotic (if my looks didn't already give it away)...Although I would never do such thing back home at a bar, don't be afraid to express your north american knowledge...it certainly payed off that night as I found myself in a sex hotel this girl took me to shortly after we left the club at 8 am.

Vinicius de Moraes was a poet, playwright, lyricist, diplomat, international playboy (spoke four languages fluently), and all-around G. He is also considered one of the founding fathers of Samba and Bossa Nova. He helped launch many music careers, including Jobim, Joao Gilberto, and Toquinho. He also wrote some of the greatest music I've ever heard... here's some:

One of the things I like about Brazilian music is how the music reflects the diversity of the country, and this means there are a lot of interpretations and re-interpretations that are completely different from the originals. Everybody adds a little something to the pot. This one is a really good example of that:

Legiao Urbana is a legendary band in Brasil. Its lead singer, Renato Russo - the Jim Morrison's brasilian version - died in 96.

Faroeste Cabloco is their absolute classic. It's my favorite brasilian rock song. It is a nine minutes powerful story about poverty, love, drugs, violence and redemption. A classic. Beautiful long legs will open if you know this song.

Pagode romantico is a style appreciated essentially by the lower classes people, but I personnaly like it much better than Axe .. it's just more .. brasilian. Raça Negra, a band from the periferia of Sao Paulo, are IMO the most representative of this musical style.

Martinho da Vila is for me the greatest samba singer.

If one day you find his last album, Connexoes, you can buy it without hesitations. It's a bomb of old school Samba. By the way, Martinho owns a small bar in Rio, in Vila Isabel (a neighborhood of Zona Norte), named "Botequim do Martinho", where he very often plays with his sambistas friends. A very cool place. You won't find the usual Copa gringo punter there.
