Just a quick note:

If you are planning to come here, when you get to the trust mart, do not buy or eat the little red 'goji berries'. Had a wonderful bout of chemical poisoning today after finding out they are laced with sulfur. Apparently all chinese know this and cook them for hours before they eat them, I just threw a couple on top of my cereal this morning and within 30 seconds had projectile vomitting followed by horrible stabbing pains. Spent the entire day in the hospital getting my stomach washed, not fun. Apparently same goes for the instant oatmeal, you have to wash it for an hour or two before you eat it. I've had alot of crap luck from store bought foods... the yogurt they have here that is in the little clear glass bottle with the cow on the front: SERIOUS vomitting and dry heaving with stomach cramps for 2 days straight followed by a week of diahrea. Panda is absolutely right, there is no control over food contamination here. If you get away with just the diahrrea you are lucky. I get the runs at least once a month, so be prepared for that. Also tis the season to pick up an electrified racket, the mosquitoes are out in FORCE and for some reason whenever I wake up to mosquitoes, their friends the cockroaches are never far away. If you are going to live in Guangzhou for any length of time you must buy GLUE BOARDS. Throw these things down at night infront of your bedroom door, apartment entrance and all around your kitchen. Also throw them down in hard to reach places like under the couch or behind the fridge, I always feel like a ghostbuster, whipping these things out. If you ever find yourself chasing these little bastards, you should have several small plungers ready to go and some spray. Simply pop the plunger over the roach and lift up just a crack, then unload a second or two of spray inside. Shake and bake.

A dehumidifier is a must, they will run you about 700 rmb. My friend and his wife have been waking up to some serious black mold that nearly covered their entire apartment, not an exaggeration. They moved out last week, once its in, you gotta knock down the walls to get at it. Its also highly toxic. For this I use packing tape. Don't touch that sh1t without a mask, its VERY bad for you, get a spray bottle, fill with 1/2 bleach, 1/2 water, spray it on top and wipe away after its wet down. After you let dry for a bit, put packing tape strips over the affected area and start looking for a new apartment.
Dehumidifiers don't kill mold, they only halt the production.

If this doesn't deter you from coming here, then you must really be hard up for pvssy.

BTW the best diahrrea meds are the ones that resemble little yellow smarties and are made of charcoal... the other 'chinese medicine' spikey crunch balls don't work.

I'm going to visit Shenzhen/Guangzhou in October on tourist visa.. since I have a limited capital, plan is to look for a job in sales/marketing, and trying to start up my own biz on the side. Does any of you guys here have experience with that?

All of you guys saying you wouldn't stand by and would do something I would advise you against it in China.
I was out late one night and my friends (one foreign guy and two Chinese girls) and I decided to go to get something to eat. Outside the restaurant there were two tables of about 5 or 6 Chinese guys (each table) and they started saying all kinds of horrible things to us and especially the girls for being with us on our way in. We were only friends no relationships going on. One of the chinese girls decided it would be a good idea to argue with them. I tried to tell her to ignore them but she wouldn't let it go. I sat inside looking out through the glass doors and could see a bunch of chinese men arguing with her.
I then saw one of the men punch her in the face. With out thinking and being a little tipsy I went straight out and punched that guy in the face. I then had 10 chinese guys trying to beat me. When they couldn't get me down one of the smashed me in the head from behind with a chair. I wasn't knocked out and asked them to keep coming but they all backed away because I had a shitload of blood pouring from my head.
I went to the hospital and got 10 stitches for my trouble. I consider myself lucky. I'll never get involved with anything again. Chinese people don't know the meaning of a one on one fight. Whenever there is the possibility of a fight they call all their friends. I would advise any foreigner to stay out of these situations because chinese people will always stand together against you whether you are right or wrong doesn't matter.

Seen that happen many times, ganging up on one "angmo" (literally "red hair" for whites where I come from). To deal with them, you need to call your own bunch. And it's not really a Chinese thing. Thais, Viets, Malays, too.

Just create a credible business name. It will not need to be incorporated or anything like that.

Also recommend getting business cards printed if you want to interact or do business with any of the vendors.
Business cards and even the way you hand them over and accept them is a significant part of their business culture.

If you do that and start giving your cards to vendors, you may like to set up a specific gmail address especially for it, as you may be overwhelmed by ongoing emails from them.

It is 7 or 8 years since I was at the Canton Fair, but I can only imagine that it is an even bigger deal now, if that is possible!

It used to be programmed in 2 halves, so you would need to be there over 2 different weeks to see everything.

If you are business minded, I think you would be overwhelmed with ideas

I can personally vouch for L&K Tailor in the Tsim Sha Tsui area. They have multiple locations mainly in and around CK Mansion. They sell mid-high range bespoke suits. Once they have your measurements, in future you can simply customize your suit on their website; LKTAILOR.COM, place an order and they'll ship it to you at a reasonable price.

The price depends on how I am feeling.

If a particular fabric catches me than I might pay upwards of $2000. I would prefer to stay in the $1000 range otherwise I am paying Canadian prices.

Ningxia Goji that is good must be from the North and certainly not the South. They are obtained from very high up lateral to the Manchurian mountainous region. First off you should have known before entering that China has severe problems with quality in regards to almost everything. You should only drink bottled water from imported brands if possible and ask locals what brands they consume. There are a million brands in China (including those imported here to the States) and only half are of quality fit for human (or even animal) consumption.

I learned the hard way when going abroad, never ever eat anything that you haven't had before unless you ask a local how it is prepared. Don't eat any fish without properly researching it. Some tropical fish have protozoans that can cause diseases that last decades, and there is no cure. You can get things like Bartonella and all kinds of disgusting shit. Keep your immune system high and practice extremely high discretion in what you eat. Do not eat anything without asking what it is beforehand. If they joke around and don't tell you - DO NOT FUCKING EAT IT. Get up, walk away and leave.

Pure goji berries can be eaten raw. I sometimes buy them on bulk online dehydrated and rehydrate them with hot water. No side effects, no problems. Sulfur should not be a concern, it was probably laced with some sort of heavy metal which would yield an acute herxheimer reaction of that sort.

Certain groups of Guangzhou people are incredibly filthy and dirty. I grew up around them in Flushing Queens and believe me many are in a poor state of health and lack the education to improve their standard of living. Hong Kong is not much better. There are a large amount of immigrants there who are buying property and become slum lords. Enter and stay at your own risk. If you have the budget, only buy brands labeled for export as they are much safer because they fear backlash from any foreign governments and don't want any trade bans or restrictions.

All depend on your salary and living style.

If you are earning like mainland salaries, Guangzhou is gonna be like slave house. Everything in mainland these days cost as much if not more than the us, except for maybe housing, but even then your apartment is not gonna be as good or you have to share with other foreign students etc.

HK on the other hand is a first world city, even if you are on local salary you can still get by, although housing is gonna take a large portion of your expenses. Aside from housing you don't really spend much on other stuff, provided that you don't go to lkf everyday. Food is cheap.

Again it all depend on your salary in mainland, if you are competing with the local Chinese, it's not gonna be good lifestyle, they can save better than you, they have family there who maybe support them etc. however if you land a great middle to senior management position with a foreign multinational in Guangzhou, your lifestyle is gonna be ok, although even these are now taken up by local Chinese nowadays, especially sales type positions. Bear in mind local Chinese earn like 6000 RMB a month in cities like Guangzhou.That probably won't be enough to pay rent for a decent pad in dust tier cities on the mainland. If you can leverage your foreigner status to get a decent gig in mainland (I'm talking about earning at around 13000 RMB a month in first tier cities, I know a lot of people live ok with 10,000rmb) I would say go for it, but beware of the costs there if you want western standard living.

If you are thinking about a short bang trip, still HK would be better as the girls As the girls in lkf are more dtf compared to the more traditional ones on mainland.

I don't know why people keep perpetuating this myth that all HK women are ass-faced ugly. Must be people venting their frustrations because it's not as easy as the Philippines/Thailand or some shit. Anyway, it's an international city; there are women from all over East Asia coming in and out every day. Personally I don't think most of the local women look bad at all, either.

Walking around the streets day or night, and in the MTR during rush hour, you can spot plenty of hot sluts.

The last time I was there my Tinder was blowing up with matches and activity, but I didn't have time to capitalize on it. I'm no male model. I doubt it's a hard place to get your cock wet if you're there for more than a week.

I just got back from HKG yesterday and I concur with comments ref Tinder. Every other swipe right ended in a match and managed to bang a very nice 7 from Indo. I love the variety there. Do agree about HKG night game not being great. Tinders been a godsend for me. I travel to HKG most months with work.
