I think that little jig is genuine. Most major athletes have some kind of routine they go through before every event. High jumpers especially are known for being OCD about every pre-jump action. It's a technique that's actually very similar to NLPs anchoring where you revisit a predefined state of mind.

This thread saddens me. When I was in martial arts (Taekwondo), one of my goals was to be in the Olympics. I was held back because the powers that be didn't want me to get injured and ruin their money for nothing that they had going on with me. My argument was always, if I make the Olympics I can put that on ads and that will bring people into class.

Well, there's always Curling. My dad wrote one of the guys that does it in the Olympics asking what kind of training they do. The guy said "smoke cigarettes and drink beer". That sounds like my kind of sport!

I think the vast majority of these world-class athletes tend to be pretty cool people. Strangely, I've met a legit Olympian (a Silver Medalist) and several people who went to Olympic trials, and I've figured out that that once they're done with the Olympics, they go back to pretty normal lives. Even immediately before, and not long after the Games, they have pretty ordinary existences. The exceptions, of course, are the one-in-ten-thousand who get exceptionally famous and rich. The absolute worst is when it's a chick who gets famous for being hot.

Here's an interview with this chick two years ago, when she was--presumably--17 years old. It kind of unwittingly (and presciently) explains the dance--an explanation that I tend to believe (@0:35).
