Its best to say it with a playful, flirty, yet strong masculine frame.

Too serious = creppy

Too playful = immature

"The weather is great today" is to matter of fact and boring. Say it went more of a seductive tone and a smile on your face. Smile wide when she looks at you, this will make you appear friendly and playful and counter balance any suspicions that she might have.

Went to the law library to get some research done, they have a good AmJur2d collection.

I had a meeting 30 minutes later, and speaking from experience, its not wise to try and organize dates/activities with 1Ls during final exams.

Last night was my first night out at the bars in Miami after returning from the DR...

Approach 1:

Your approaches seem goood, try statements and more open ended questions, it's hard at first but once you know a few it get's easier. Sometimes if I'm stuck I just use a stock 'What are you up to today in London?' (she'll ask you the same so have an answer ready!)
