I see a lot of hate towards DJs. Years back I never really appreciated the skill that a good DJ must possess, and probably would have agreed with most of you. Sure, a lot of modern "DJs" will just sit there with iTunes running a playlist, while sipping at a beer. These days, however, I have mad respect for those that worked their asses off learning to scratch and making a living out of it - there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.

Yeah. I've also noticed that girls really like DJing themselves, even if there aren't many professional ones – they love the chance to be in the booth, co-organise a night, just spin records at a party, etc. In some ways it's similar to photography which is another classic chick creative form (and also great for impressing them) – low effort, often somehow parasitic on other people's efforts, revolving around 'taste'. At least in the devolved sense most people practise it. I used to believe that smart and genuinely creative girls would see through the bullshit, but experience has taught me otherwise – if anything they fall for it harder. I actually can't think of any occasion when a girl wasn't impressed by DJing, or photography.

P Dog, most people seem to just use CD decks these days, particularly for small scale things. You can probably kit yourself out for a few hundred bucks + a weekend spent burning discs.

In St. Louis, about 20 girls came back to his hotel suite. I banged a solid 8 on the bathroom sink. Little brunnette about 18 or 19. I figured that would be the highlight of the weekend.

In Indy the next night. My friend and I ran the merchandise area when the DJ played. I started off slow, because I felt a little guilty giving this dude's shit away. Things like wiggle your ass, shake your tits back and forth. By later in the evening, after I said, "fuck it, when will this happen for me again." I was saying, "Let me put my hand down your shorts and see if your wet enough to deserve a CD." Or "Oh, you want a shirt. OK, let me finger your pussy behind the table." Boom. They didn't hesitate.

Back in the suite, it was incredible watching about a dozen 9s all trying to compete and outdo each other. They all wanted to screw the DJ, but they had no idea he was in another suite on the phone with his wife and soon fast asleep. Two were in skirts. I said, "I bet you won't take your panties off and leave them for the DJ." It was like they raced to slide them off. Later, one was sitting on the bed and I was on a chair halfway across the room. I motioned for her to spread her legs a little. She did. I gave her a thumbs up.

By this time I was as bold as ever. I motioned the hottest girl on to the balcony, asked if she wanted to meet the DJ. Of course, she is almost giddy with delight over the prospect. I simply said, "He likes me to see what's up with a girl before he meets her. She took my hand, we went into the kitchenette area and she blew me with gusto. Then she let me do pretty much anything I wanted. I pulled some things out of the porn playbook that I never tried on "regualr hookups."

My friend was having a three-some, while five or six other girls watched. It was surreal.

All for the chance to meet a fucking DJ.

The next night in Columbus, same stuff. It was incredible having that much power (none of earned either) over seriously desirable chicks.

It was a little tricky when we had to kick them out and they never got to meet or do the DJ. Lots of, "Sorry, he has an early flight. He was about to come over too. I guess his set really tired him out."

It was one of my best weekends. Oh yeah, and the DJ gave me $2,000 for helping out in Indy and Columbus. I gave away at least 50 CDS's and shirts, but I didn't give any of the money back. I felt bad for a moment, but he made over $100K for the weekend. I doubt he missed it.

Great story. Wish I knew who this DJ was. What kind of music was it? I'm sure you can tell at least that. If I could live any type of lifestyle tomorrow, I'd be an international house DJ. I couldn't imagine any better lifestyle.

It's been almost 10 years since that happened, but I'm not sure if I should release his name. I mean, he didn't do anything wrong. But my friend is still his personal trainer and I don't know if he ever knew what went down.
I will say he's a house DJ (some progressive house) and was part of collobarative that had a No. 1 dance hit in the early 90's.

If you live in a city with a hipster enclave, this will make sense to you. DJ-ing well isn't easy--and requires, if not musical talent, some technical skills and musical intuition--but 9 out of 10 of those cats aren't doing shit. That's why everyone claims to be a "DJ" these days.

guess what , you can dj with just a laptop these days with a program called ableton live (that's what most modern guys are doing, with a few added machines, that aren't really necessary).

get that (it can be downloaded easily), a solid pair of studio monitoring headphones (for 200 bucks), and a midi keyboard (for about 150 bucks) and you can teach yourself with free tutorials on youtube, produce music, and learn how to create, mix, perform, etc. music live.

The reason the guys at the top made the money is because they have been in the game for longer, and in particular, before the age of downloading, when ACTUAL money was being made.

If skrillex came out before 1999, he would be probably the highest on the list. Skrillex is like the jimi hendrix of electronic dance music right now. He just has a ridiculous over-the-top sound. His breakdowns are just more sick than anyone else's.

I never really got into that whole rave thing. I went to one once when I was a teen and thought it was stupid. But that's probably because I'm not into drugs and just couldn't enjoy it the way everyone does.

It's just weird that you have tens of thousands of people going nuts in the audience over a guy on stage with a sound board and mixer. It looks perfectly normal when there's a rock band on stage and there's an actual performance of some sort. But it's just a guy up there spinning and everyone is acting like it's the Beatles on that stage. I just don't get that whole thing about the rave culture. More power to Tiesto though. He's living the life. Shit, wish that was me up there!

I was there on Fri and Sun. On Fri I was with a bunch of guys who had serious wealth. We flew to EDC in a helicopter to be driven to the table section and left in a limo (wish we did the reverse, the ride home took forever). These guys had the most expensive "table" in the place (Paris Hilton tried to come and hang out, one guy told her to get lost). Most of the people in the table section were dressed a little neon but were mainly just people seeing another event. I just looked into the crowd and thought "Jesus, I'd hate to have to take a piss out there"

Sunday was a different animal. I had a "vip" card but that just really meant a much shorter line right next to the main entrance. I was fucking disgusted with these people, I really felt like I was in a zombie apocalypse (I'm getting sick of that term bu that's what it was like). All of these drugged out degenerates dressed like morons, fucked up out of their minds stumbling along trying to fuck each other over as they cut in and out of line. When I finally made it to the table I was so relieved because I had to literally navigate through a sea of these people once I was inside.

If I could go back to HS I would tell my guidence counselor to fuck off. Being a DJ and pressing "play" must be the easiest fucking job in the world and you get a cult following of minions.

This is what I have been attempting to do. I don't have the midi controller yet, and I use FL Studio. It's amazing how girls' faces light up when you tell them "I make electronic music in my free time".

With the technology today, spinning will just get you jobs working weddings, bar/batmitzvahs, private parties, and small scale clubs. You really need to learn composition and production in order to make it now. Everyone and their sister tries their hand at electronic music today.

I am offended that you put Skirllex in the same class as Jimi Hendrix.

I've always found it weird that DJing in and of itself is a massive DHV.

I know one guy who is a DJ, and he gets top girls all the time from picking up at his 'gigs,' even though he only plays in pubs/nightclubs to about 50-100 people.

The thing is, he is over 30 and has absolutely nothing going for him whatsoever outside of that. If he had any other semi-pro hobby, the fact that he lived with his parents and had no money, car or career wouldn't be worth the novelty for these girls. But because of the nature of DJing (somehow, I have no idea why) he gets ONS's and LTR's at a click of a finger.

And he has no game whatsoever. It is one of those cases which occasionally baffles me.

A DJ is a center of attention. Women want to be with the man everyone is looking at. Women are attention whores and if a man is getting attention, then that's who the woman wants to be with.

I have nothing with the DJ scene but why hate on guys who are living the dream? Guys who travel around the world, have a 5 star luxury life, girls want them and guys want to be them, they make big bank and gain respect.

I don't see anything wrong with that. I mean who the hell here has groupies in the 8 or 9 range waiting for them ? I sure as hell ain't.

I'm not familiar with the scene but i bet the DJ world is just as much cutthroat, survival of the fittest and most talented as any other business. Other wise every one could be doing the same.

People tend to think being a DJ is just some passive thing where you're playing a list of songs on iTunes. For smaller crowds maybe so, but if you're the type of DJ packing megaclubs, you are being way more interactive. Look at this clip of David Guetta. He's also creating sounds on the fly as well as knowing how to build up and release in his interaction with the crowd to keep the party happy. DJs have to be in tune with the crowd vibe. They are like puppet masters up there tugging the strings of the revelers.

Seems we have a different perspective on this... I don't see it as hate against DJs so much as against questioning the idiots who think just being a DJ is somehow amazing. I think the generalizations are in reference to the majority, not the top DJs who are showing some serious talent.

A lot of these guys are producers. That means that they make their own tracks. There's a huge difference between a guy who is DJ'ing in a popular night club vs. a GOOD DJ. Nightclub DJ's just take top 40 hits and make an itunes playlist out of them, whereas good DJ knows how to play his own stuff as well as other DJ's stuff- they turn this into a playlist that that particular crowd will enjoy (for example, a crowd in Miami is typically into different stuff than a crowd in NYC, vs a crowd in Berlin). Armin Van Buuren, for example, is a GREAT dj because he knows how to play exactly what the crowd wants to hear no matter where he is. That, and the tracks he produces are awesome too.

Gareth Emery is a great DJ/producer. I recently saw him at EDC in NYC, and in August I'm seeing an all day performance by him.

One of the things that I love about the EDM scene is the positive atmosphere- the music is awesome, people tend to be laid back/friendly, there are plenty of hot/slutty girls, and Molly is nice too. I used to be a huge death metal/black metal fan (I still am), but recently my taste has switched over to trance music. I was recently at an Alcest show (they are a French heavy metal band). The music was INCREDIBLE, but after the show I wanted to take shots of cyanide, pass out and die slowly in my sleep. That, and the audience consisted of 99% dudes. This as opposed to an EDM show, where I'm pumped up after the show, ready to fuck something, and there are lots of Asian & white girls wearing slutty outfits.

Precisely. Most people are willing to just trust what they see there, but in reality there a) isn't a lot of verification for these numbers (calculating net worth isn't simple-it is more than income) and b) there is quite a bit of inflation/guesswork.

Take those numbers with a truckload of salt.

The highest status male (or one of the top few) in a club or music venue is the performer, not the dude spitting pickup lines in their ear.
