This brings me to my current dilemma, either get a service apartment where I know they will have a guard out front reducing the chance of thief and unsuspecting guests, however I lose a lot of privacy and may potentially be cockblocked or should I risk it and get a place without any guards out front having a bit more peace of mind that theft will be greatly reduced.

How much of a cockblock did you guys find it? I think I will most likely go with a service apartment as the bigger luxury apartments like masteri, vinhomes central park, etc are quite pricey and abit out of the way to d1.

If you go for places that are advertised as having "security" or "guards", don't take that at face value either. I stayed in an Airbnb apartment in D1 before which was "guarded", meaning that 90% of the time the guard was asleep. He was blocking the front door, but I'd literally climb over him and he still wouldn't wake up. A thief could easily do the same.

Having said that though, all 4 of the Airbnb's I've stayed in in Saigon had guards, cleaners and other regular people living there / hanging around, and not once have I been cockblocked by any of them even if they saw me with different girls. In fact one of the guards was the opposite, high fiving me and giving the thumbs up to me with a big grin on his face, behind girls' backs when they weren't looking.

YMMV though, I don't have experience staying in any one apartment for longer than 2 weeks so if you stay long term, cockblocks may start happening.

RE: The lowdown on Ho Chi Minh/Vietnam - datasheet
I've spent about 2 years in Vietnam and never experienced any theft and i have mostly lived in normal big apartment buildings with "passive guards", meaning there are guards on the bottom floor but they do not check guests entering, they are just there.

Imo the Vietnamese people view privacy in another way and i think it is difficult to get the kind of privacy you are used to in serviced apartments.
I don't have alot of experience from serviced apartments though so i could be wrong.

I would add to the above that even serviced apartments, you still maintain the privacy you want. It's very unlikely that someone's going to get all up into your business -- they just don't care. As long as the maid and the guards are getting paid for their jobs, they're happy and will keep to themselves.

Theft is overblown here. Nobody is going to steal your shit as long as you're aware of your surroundings and are reasonably cautious as you would be in any major city in the world. Just don't go waving your phone on a street or wear expensive shit. That's just careless and that's when theft happens.

I'm main concern with the cockblock is asking for the girl's id card or the guard mentioning to my dates that I'm bringing different girl's back to my place. However, it seems from what you guys are saying it wouldn't be much of an issue, which gives me more peace of mind then. I got cockblocked a few times when I was staying at hotels in d1 in the past where the receptionist dude asked for the girl's id card and looked pissed.

Yeah, its pretty much a non issue outside of the high end hotels with overzealous receptionists.

I wouldn't say that exactly. The guard in the front lobby of one of my D1 apartments was a moron, and my (now) wife managed to weasel out of him exactly how many other women I had visiting regularly. This despite the fact that he was explicitly ordered by the owner of the building to shut his mouth about my "guests."

She did the ole "huh, what do you think about all those other women he's seeing?"

You will have to do some research and do short-stays until you find a lobby that does not do this, or a cool receptionist / guard.

Do you guy's also mention casually when your first checking the place out that if it is ok to have "guests or your gf over" to the agent or owner? I'm wondering if I should bring this up and even get them to put it down on the contract but I'm worried they will think I'm gonna be bringing hookers back to my place or something.

You don't need a guard. They dont do their job anyway. That's what a locked front door is for. If your plate comes uninvited, she's desperate and will say some shit in order to gain access anyway.

Serviced apartments make a big deal out of locking the door. They will fine people who leave it open. Most have security cameras. Therefore theft isn't an issue.

Why wouldn't you be able to bring guests? It's your house.

Avoid the ones with receptionists. They can meddle when they see you bringing lots of girls home. They did this to me before.

I always ask this on Airbnb when I make a booking and I have never had problems with it. Could always bring girls, no questions asked.

As has been said in this thread before, its the high end 4-5 star hotels and resorts that will cockblock you. I have personally experienced this fairly recently where I asked a luxury hotel beforehand if I could take my Vietnamese girlfriend, and they said "only if you're married".

That's ridiculous. Do they even make you pay twice the price if 2 people sleep in the same room ?

I’ll be in HCMC end of November for an indefinite amount of time. It will be my first time in SEA.

Why do I need a different SIM card?

Thanks!

You might not need a different SIM card if you have tmobile. However, you might want a different card anyway so you can have a local phone # and keep your real # private.

Thank you my friend. I have Sprint with an international plan. It works poorly in every country I’ve been too and poorly in the state of Texas, but it works. I’ve never been to SEA and I want to be prepared.

Hey Duke, if you keep using your American SIM card, won't girls get charged more when they message you from their local phones?

That's what I thought, it's one of the reasons I bought another phone and will buy a SIM when I get abroad. Also to not mix contacts from home/abroad, and to not carry the phone I actually need for various things when I'm walking around.

Are girls who are using Zalo instead of Whatsapp more flakey?

I've noticed that my conversations die on Zalo very frequently as compared to girls who speak good english and use whatsapp.

Anyone can relate?

Virtually every girl I've talked to online uses Zalo. Only one asked for whatsapp. English ability has varied a lot. Vietnamese girls are often very shy about speaking in English, so if you mix in some Việt, you might find them more open to carrying the conversation.

Mix in a bit of Viet sure.. The sense I'm getting recently is a big inferiority complex that these girls compensate for in different ways. A little bit of Viet can make them feel that you're not just another foreigner indifferent to them beyond their skin, low body fat and their body.

Supposedly Zalo has a code which means that girls can hide or reveal 'deniable' conversations as and when its convenient, boyfriends or husbands can't access those messages even with a phone password.

meant to perfectly suit the culture of infidelity amongst young couples.

That MAY be a reason for Zalo flakes, their boyfriend is around too much for her to keep anything going..

RE: The lowdown on Ho Chi Minh/Vietnam - datasheet
I've spent about 2 days now so far looking for a reasonably priced apartment in d3 that is close to d1 to no avail. Its been quite frustrating as the price and pics don't even match up when I show up to the place. Like there was one apartment in d3 that had a listed price and pic with a balcony then when I showed to view the place, there was no balcony plus they tacked on an extra 200,000k for some BS management, internet, washing machine fee + 100k for water and your electricity. I've seen almost 99% of places usually only charging for electricity which usually runs between 3500 to 4000 dongs a kWh and some places charging you an extra 100k for water. Also the place ended up being further away too by an extra block or two. How much are you guys paying for an apartment? Is a budget around 400-500 USD a reasonable amount? There are plenty of small rooms in d3 for around 7.5-8.5 million dongs but they are only like 20-25 sqm with a tiny ass kitchen. Do your dates mind such a small place? I was hoping to get a place with at least 40 sqm but those seem none existent unless I'm willing to move far away or pay upwards of 600-700USD, even in d3!

I'm currently staying at some rundown old hotel inside of a tiny room directly in front of my relatives house. Bringing girls back is a big no no, as most of the people recognize me now plus I have been flirting with one of the girls at the reception desk. Its saving me a good amount of money because I get free meals from my relatives house plus eating outside is dirt cheap and this hotel is only charging me like $400 CAD but I can't get laid here.
