It's in biological science.
My reasons were the same. I didn't want to apply for a job and think someone was better than me right off the bat. I knew I had the potential to do it to, and I didn't want to waste it. And when you go out and a broad asks you what you do, telling them you're doing a doctorate is like shooting fish in a barrel.

The doctorate is a definite panty dropper in certain circles. I got my first notch of the year in large part because of it. Just wait until you start checking into hotels as Dr. Frontenac. Feels fucking great. I'm still a pretty young looking guy and it's turned a few hotel receptionists heads.

1989: Bachelor of Science in Computational Mathematics (basically a hybrid math/computer science degree)
2003: Master of Science in Systems Engineering

Now entering 24th year in software engineering. I cannot complain, always had decent money since I was 22 years old.

It's a big investement, Architekt. Time, money, relationships. My PhD cost me two LTR's, but this was before I switched Beta Frontenac off.
It may be the hardest thing you ever attempt. But if you can get through it, then you'll have the confidence to get through almost anything after that. A doctorate is not an education in just one field, but an education in problem solving and overcoming long odds to accomplish a goal. I think this is the most improtant thing someone can get out of it. That's why even if I met a person had a PhD in basket weaving or some BS, they will still have my respect because they got through it.

Haven't attempted a novel as of this point. I feel a lot of people make the mistake of trying to write their great novel before they're even capable of writing a solid page. A lot of them then cling to this novel because they spent so much time on it when they should really burn it and start the next turd (that should also ultimately be burned).

Personally, I've been working on short stories, which will never be as profitable as novels (even as an entire collection), but obviously I don't care that much about profits or I wouldn't be in this field. The rise of e-readers, smartphones, etc. has aided the short format as Flash Fiction and novellas have gained popularity in recent years.

The rise of online literary journals has definitely changed the landscape, whether this is positive or negative is tough to say. There are more venues for writers, but way less chance of any payment and it's often just a circle jerk of people publishing each other (almost every author publishing on the web seems to edit some other journal).

Also, the Creative Writing M.F.A. has really exploded in roughly the past decade, as new programs keep popping up and low-residency programs are gaining steam. I would love to teach writing in college while working on my own writing (pretty much the set-up everyone strives for), but with the amount of degrees growing and the slashing of tenure, it is indeed a scary future. Fortunately, I'm content just to work on my craft and grow as a writer. It's nice to do something that a lot of people wish they had the balls to try at least.

I'm open for career advice from the forum.

Currently in finance, but I'm thinking about switching to marketing. Marketing is a lot easier and has way more girls. I don't think I'll be able to sit through all the boring finance classes anyway.

I've learned much more from books, stumbleupon, and this forum than 3 years of college so far. I want to run my own business and invest in real estate so I doubt my degree will even matter anyway.
