The xbox is fairly big to travel with but i can stream movies, stream any music i want on zune, i have karaoke on it, an the dance central game with the kinect is the biggest hit/icebreak with girls.

IPad and NetBook.IPad is good for long travels because of long battery.NetBook is more useful while in hotel room.

any recommendations to power adapters? I just use the generic, $3 ones since they don't take up a lot of room. anything for multiple gadgets? I usually plug my macbook into it, then use the USB ports to charge the phone.

Ok Folks this might be a stupid question, but to the Tech savvy RVF members, Can One not use the I-Phone as a Modem ? Something to the effect of Tethering the phone to your laptop, I have seen E-mech do it here in US...., Seems like if there is Dataplan on the SIM one should be able to surf the net on the I phone or use it as a modem for laptop ?

Has anyone done this to use a Jailbroken I Phone and use it Internationally as a modem for your computer ?

Yo e-mech what's the name of the App you use for Tethering ....

I use my droid as a wireless hotspot. It can be tethered but apparently mine needs to be reflashed for it to work for some reason.

I'm looking for something with better reception is why I am curious about the USB dealio.

I had an aircard, which sounds the same as the USB wireless using the SIM, in the past and it worked much better than my current setup.

yea. Just google wifi tether.
Anyone with a large or unlimited data plan can root(same as jailbreak for iphone) their android and easily use either google's open source or one of the many wifi tether apps.

It gets around having to pay for you to use your phone as a router.

I used to carry a 15" Toshiba laptop, but that one crapped out after many years of getting toted around. I scooped up a used 12" Toshiba Portege M700 laptop, which is a tablet (it has that rotating screen, and comes with a couple of styluses. I grabbed a new 17" laptop (Satellite C675D) on sale, and that one stays home. Getting a smaller lap saves some weight, as I only like to travel with a backpack and a carry-on suitcase.

I carry a couple of cameras. I take a Nikon Coolpix S70 (12MP), which is very small and thin, and can go in any pocket. It's got a 3" touch screen. My "tourist" camera is a Kodak EasyShare Z980 (12MP, 24X zoom). I'm a big picture-taker, and this camera gets great shots (I took a great shot of the top of Big Ben when I was in London, among others, as well as some great shots in Rome and Mayan Ruins in the Yucatan).

I carry an 80GB video ipod, with Bose in-ear headphones. I have some Dre Beats over-ears, but I rarely travel with them.

I use my Blackberry Bold 9000 on the road, and slip in a local SIM.

I've been thinking about getting a tablet to carry around with me when I'm out and about when traveling. The lap stays in the room connected to the free internet, but it would be nice to have something that I can use while I'm out walking around to take advantage of free wi-fi. It can also double as a reader, instead of getting a Kindle also. I've found that the biggest hassle is all of the cords, chargers and adapters you have to carry. The hotel chain that starts providing the various gadget cords, chargers and connection tips will CLEAN UP!

Wifi tether is amazing.. thanks sourcecode!

Only issue is that my kindle won't support the peer-to-peer connection, but no big deal since I have the cable.

USB Tethering wasn't working even though my phone is rooted, but I found a solution.

I downloaded PDA Net for my laptop: http://www.junefabrics.com/android/download.php

I installed the PDA Net app for my phone:

Success! Until I get a USB broadband modem, this is a great temporary solution in case I don't have internet.

It's called tether me I loaded it through Cydia. They have youtube videos on how to do all that stuff.

I have a Galaxy Nexus phone here in Korea. To turn it into a portable hotspot all I do is go into settings and click a button. It's great to not have to pay for internet in my room. I just use my phone's unlimited data plan.

If you're on AT&T you can buy a special tethering plan. That's probably easiest, but also most expensive - something like $45 / month. You call AT&T to activate it and then do Settings>General>Network>Set Up Personal Hotspot.

This app looks solid, haven't tried it myself: http://intelliborn.com/mywi.html - but you need a jailbroken phone to use it.

As for travel gadgets:

1. iPhone 4S - got unlocked version. I did the maths and with contract it would have cost me more and tied me down for two years. In the US I run off an AT&T pay and go SIM. For $50 / month I get more minutes than I need, unlimited texts and 1gb data (with a bit of tweaking to the network settings). And it lets me change out the SIM at will wherever I go.

2. Kindle touch - love this. I wish there was a service that would let me convert all my old books into kindle books. Got the wifi only version. It's pretty unstable though and will crash sometimes; I've heard the keyboard version is more solid.

3. Old Motorola flip phone - for extra SIM cards / if I'm heading somewhere that I don't want to bring my iphone to.

A discrete voice recorder can be pretty useful when traveling. You can record your tutor or approaches and review the language in your spare time.

I carry an old Nokia that works with any SIM in any country, just a basic phone that makes texts and calls. Also have a small point and click camera that is just gathering dust in my bag as it never gets used. I wish I had either bought a new netbook or got my old one fixed before coming here, it would have come in handy.

I scooped up a Motorola Motofone F3 a few years ago, and it was made just for that purpose - a basic call/text phone that will work anywhere in the world. You just slip in a SIM and it's good to go.

Also, KisMac app and USB modem for internet cracking... Very easy to use as well...Maybe try Air-Crack and Wire-Shark if you're on PC...Not sure...

I think mine is one of shit ones (Hawking HWUG1A) still works pretty well though. Programme is dead easy to use, although now I'm running Lion it's a bit buggy and crap. I really want the modem with the big antenna.... it has a piss-taking range of like 9 miles or something....You'd probably look like a terrorist if you started carrying all this stuff though. Not to mention the largest geek in the world....

You take an XBox? I'm guessing when you go abroad you spend a good period of time in one place and don't travel around because that would be a huge pain to carry around.

Yea I was using pdanet for a while also.
I dont know why wifi tether didnt work.
To get complicated anyone can go over to the XDA forums and find the sub forum for just about every smart phone

Im about to go for one of these galaxy nexus.
I just found out tmobile has a unlimited text/data +100 minute plan for 300 a month and you can make it to 5gigs of data before they throttle you.

With all the customization in googles phones and having it be GSM..Not only could i save like 400 a year from sprint and I wouldnt have to carry my CDMA phone as a music player.

itll cost some money up front..but in the long run..i see it as a way to carry less gadgets in all.

The reviews say it doesnt work on tmobile because the network cuts you from 3g to the slow edge
on the other hand,this one from them same companyZoom freedom is suppose to work

there are so many other brands and whatnot..but not lots of reviews for them
