What are your thoughts about online bullying?
What are your thoughts about online bullying or even just regular bullying? News stories left and right about kids today killing themselves over being bullied. Do you think it's a problem? Or do you think kids today are just more sensitive than in years past?

RE: What are your thoughts about online bullying?
Its because kids don't self-respect. If you have *real* pride and respect for yourself you will project it to others. The net and digital culture manufactures this and it really becomes a non-issue since if somebody is trolling or mocking you online and sitting around taking it your just as much of a tool as the person on the other side.

Yo when I was a kid and when dudes gave me shit we fought. Even as a shy kid I still didn't let kats punk me. I had self-respect for myself and respected others but if somebody crossed that line we settled it. Didn't matter if it was a upper-year, some punk big kid or even my friends. If there was beef we settled it and 90% of the time after things cooled off and it was cool.

Kids and especially boys are nowadays taught to stand down and not express yourselves. Back in the day morals we're taught but also the notion that you have to stand up for yourself when faced with difficulties. Also kids don't play rank sports anymore in Gym. Its a liability now for schools I remember every second Friday climbing up those death apparatuses and ropes in the gym... playing kickball and getting in scraps during gym class. Kids need to have that outlet of release.

Bullying rises as culture becomes more selfish and individualized. Both sides are insecure and seek validation. This in my mind is what breeds bullying and is the reasons it keeps becoming more and more of an issue in today's youth.

RE: What are your thoughts about online bullying?
Watch the Southpark episode on bullying, it's hilarious. "Butterballs" season 16.

As for my opinion, I think it's important to focus on bullying. It can seriously fuck people up even if they do not kill themselves, and contributes to a much higher incidence of mental illness and anti social behavior among its victims down the road. My intellect tells me that violence is a blunt instrument.

Although, in my personal experience, I am forced to admit violence worked very well. I have a couple sisters just a bit younger than me who both have developmental problems, but were just well enough to have gone to a regular school. Some people were making fun of them. One of the ringleaders was the younger brother of one of my classmates. I confronted my classmate about it, and he said something back about my sisters, so I beat him senseless in a rage. No one bothered my sisters after that.

In my first year of boarding school, I preferred to keep to myself as all my time was consumed by studying and swimming. At first one guy took this as weakness, and began to tease me. I ignored him. Then one day I was taking a shit and he kept knocking on the door. I calmly told him that if he knocked one more time, that when I was done I would find him and kick his ass. He laughed, did it again, and walked off. A couple minutes later after I had finished a really nice shit, I went looking for him. He was in the hallway on a stairwell, with a mixed group of 6 guys/girls. Without saying anything I went up to him, slapped him in the face, and then tackled him and punched him a few times in side. I put him in a headlock and leaned hard into the ground, pushing his face onto the floor. I asked him if he was done, and made him give up. No one ever bothered me again after that.

RE: What are your thoughts about online bullying?
For kids, it's shitty and a horrible problem. How to handle it is a problem, since most bullying is done offline. Should we trust school officials with the power to monitor and punish students for out-of-school behavior?

The government is already in our lives, so the cure may be worse than the sickness.

It's a tough issue and one I'm open-minded about.

OTOH, any adult who has ever reported post for "offending" or "bullying" is pathetic beyond words.

RE: What are your thoughts about online bullying?
bullying is terrible an needs to stop. specially kids who get bullied about having a big nose or something they cant help. when you are that young you are very impressionable and sure you may not kill yourself but it can leave you a complex that will hinder you for years an years. i used to bully the shit out of kids, i also was bullied by older bigger kids, i just think/thought its part of growing up. maybe it is but i seriously think it needs to change.

i was in gamestop a year ago an saw a kid i used to bully the shit out of when i was in school for his speech impediment. now that im a grown man an realize what a shitty thing it was for me to have done that, i seriously almost cried... i felt like such a peice of shit, hes a person with feeling just like anyone else an i used to fuck with him all the time about something he had no control over... it was a sickening feeling

im all for some new awareness programs or things that promote not bullying in school. or even young white knights taking up for kids who get bullied...

RE: What are your thoughts about online bullying?
Internet bullying is real and shitty.

It is like regular bullying but worse because cowards will do things online that they never could do 'in real life.'

A family member of mine was bullied online - and not only that; the bullies were creating fake profiles for them and messaging random hate messages to other people so they thought it was coming from the person in my family. It got to the point we had angry people knocking on our door and causing trouble.

Bloody nightmare.

Of course, I was a victim of regular bullying, and that wasn't exactly a picnic either. that said, it is my major source of inspiration for being better than everyone else.

Agreed. Online bullying should stop. On the same coin, next time I play xbox live, and get shot playing COD4, I'm calling the cops to file an assault charge.

RE: What are your thoughts about online bullying?
The online bullying is an extension of the offline bullying, except online can in many ways be worse because it allows for MORE kids to participate. You know...the ones that are scared to fuck with a kid to his face get to do it online.

The worst case scenarios are obviously a kid being so traumatized that they won't return to school, or they decide to kill themselves. The flip of that is the Columbine-type reaction, where they decide to strike back at everyone that they feel hurt them, or someone they feel represents the group that hurt them. Bullying needs to be taken seriously, and I think we see that in many of these incidents, there was plenty of warning and knowledge of the bullying, and nothing was done about it.

More sensitive, kids establish pecking orders like adults.

Me and my friends in grade school picked on the gay and ethnic kids, not b/c they were gay/Asian per se but b/c they didn't fight back. Telling teacher isn't good enough, you gotta hit him or say something back...I see a generation of non-confrontational, taciturn adults in the making. Perfect for blue pill life.

The issue isn't what the person said, it's the victim's horribly fragile self-esteem. If you can't hack it in 6th grade how are you supposed to get through adult life???? Insecure individuals killing themselves because of teasing and/or physical intimidation is just proof positive of the existence of Natural Selection.

I think kids today should be more confident in themselves or try to seek help from parents and other adults when they are being bullied. Bullying has being there since the beginning of the world. It is up to the victims to change how they feel about it and try all they can to stop people who bully them.

RE: What are your thoughts about online bullying?
I was reading an online book someone posted here about how the school system sucks (don't remember the link atm but it was some dude who was a teacher for a long time and eventually quit because he thought the system was designed to turn kids into conformist brain-dead sheep), but his perspective was that since teachers are prevented from coming down hard on kids that are being little shits (i.e. no sound beatings about the buttocks and thighs with a willow switch), and that kids know that's the case, they get away with picking on each other mercilessly. This makes the school environment extremely anxiety-inducing, much more so than in the past, and is meant to instill a basic fear and defensiveness into kids, making sure that as adults they have stunted relationships and are more dependent on a paternalistic government to control everything.

Of course this could have just been an insane libertarian rant, but it was an interesting argument.

RE: What are your thoughts about online bullying?
Bortimus, you're probably talking about John Taylor Gatto.

And I agree fullheartedly with what you're saying.

I'm still undoing years of mental shit in my head because of secondary school, and to keep it relevant to the forum, my game is years behind what it should be. I attribute it almost solely to the fact I was locked in a prison with a bunch of animals for my adolescent years, and not only did it give me social anxiety problems, but I still feel negative about the world at times; most kids do whatever they want and get away with it, most adults are spineless and won't stick up for what is right even when they have no personal fear.

That and I was years ahead of the curve in terms of intelligence so I learned next to fuck all. I could have skipped ages 10-16 and stayed in bed and i'd have been better psychologically.

RE: What are your thoughts about online bullying?
Survival of the fittest.

I was bullied pretty bad in grade school and middle school (my high school was pretty big so I was just not really noticed). It made me extremely self-conscious, but it also made me a much stronger person in the end. I view it as a necessary evil and I say that knowing it goes against the PC grain. If some kid kills himself because he can't handle the pressure, maybe he's not cut out for this world anyway. It would be one thing if the kid is being physically or mentally tortured (and I don't mean daily teasing and pranks), or they were mentally handicapped to begin with.

Online bullying is no where near as cruel as what my generation went through. Kids today are pussies.

RE: What are your thoughts about online bullying?
A kid getting bullied before social media could go home and at least escape into whatever hobbies he has, but with kids these days so reliant on social media they are always connected so they have no real escape. Of course they could turn the shit off, or nut up and deck someone in the face, but there is real difficulty in doing this.

Kids these days face so much pressure when it comes to getting into college that they got to try and maintain perfect disciplinary records, so when a situation arises that since the beginning of time would have resulted in an ass-whooping they've got to shove that shit down and try and forget it. Humans weren't designed for that.

You block someone or in extreme circumstances, report them. I get it and I'm sure these kids don't want to be known as the "tattle tale", but let's face it online bullying is nothing compared to real life bullying.

No one is forcing these kids to use any social media either, but that's part of a larger problem. It's not rocket surgery and I stand by my point, kids today are pussies. And it's not nearly as competitive or difficult to get into college as people think.

I agree about the solutions you mentioned if someone is being bullied. I partially agree that kids are more pussified, while I do think they are, I also think that every generation has thought that their successors were sissies.

I disagree about college though. Sure, it's easy to get into a 'college', but to get into a top school in your state it actually is getting more and more difficult. As the number of diploma factories increases, the more competitive it becomes to get a degree from a respected name.

I know that comparing my stats from when I applied to colleges to those of the freshman 4 years later I wouldn't have made it to either of my top 2 schools and maybe would have just barely made it into my safety school. The margin for error is a lot slimmer in H.S. these days.

After some of the violence at universities in recent years they are also becoming very strict about obtaining arrest records from before and during college. If they find out about something they can revoke your acceptance or kick you out of school right quick.

The shit that you used to be able to get away with is slowly disappearing as the sterilized-PC-HR culture filters its way down from the office.

If you 'report' a bully, nothing will happen.
Especially now, in the days of internet bullying, where everything can be deleted/is circumstantial, and the PC brigade are all over everything.

When I was being bullied at school, I had a bully slash me with scissors - to the point where I have a permanent scar. Obviously, I reported it. The official answer of the school was that the kid was not responsible because of 'anger issues and a stressful home life.' This was years ago, before the ADHD/Aspergers/PersonalityandIdentity Disorders popped up on the regular.

I imagine nothing can be done now if you're being bullied. As far as younger generations being weaker, I think if you honestly asked people of yesterday whether they'd rather go to prison for five years or relive school, a lot would take prison.

I couldn't handle having to go through schol again. jesus.

RE: What are your thoughts about online bullying?
I don't know about you guys but I wasn't ever bullied online but in person. It was my own fault since my dad told me never to fight back just ignore them. So I became the biggest push over ever and they always had a field day doing shit to me. You can ignore an e-mail but you can't ignore someone burning your arm with a hot nail like what happened to me. Kids just need to stand up for themselves if they get into a fight and get hurt then that's that, it's either fight and get your ass kicked or just stand their and get your ass kicked. Most of the insults I got was saying that I had man tits which was very rough at the time but after losing 80 lbs it's not an issue and now the bullies are fatter than me from the fb pics I saw.

Personally it's something rough we all have to go through, alot of people who were mean to me in school are nice now their adults. I don't think their needs to be any laws against it. It's part of growing up. Best advice we can give is to stand up for yourself, bruises heal but dignity takes a lot longer time to heal.
