I've always wondered how non Midwestern states handle fall events such as Halloween and thanksgiving. Not having the leaves change I'm sure has an effect. guavaween might also be worth checking out. One thing I like about gasparilla is its in January so it gives me an excuse to get the hell out of here for a weekend. 20 degree weekend vs 70 degree weekend.

This Oct might be hard since I plan on doing
ACL Oct 12-14th
and either Charleston or NOLA following weekend.

i don't know about a special trip centered around either gasparilla or guavaween, unless you were in a krewe, which are the people on the official parade floats and boats, and if you were, you wouldn't be asking us about it. its ain't exactly mardi gras. if you are coming to Florida around Halloween, while I have never been, Fantasy Fest in Key West is the bigger party than guavaween.

When I was an FSU undergrad I went to Gasparilla for the weekend. EVERYBODY who lived in Tampa was hyping it up like CRAZY. I thought it was pretty stupid. It's just a drunk parade where people dress up as pirates. THere were a lot of hot university students from all of the FL universities, but be prepared to deal with large groups & social circles. I stayed at a friends house so I can't tell you about good places to stay. I don't see a reason to go unless you're into pirates and getting drunk at parades.
