Would all of you guys who have graduated and been out in the work force for a while now suggest getting the PE licensure? I know its a lot of work, is the pay off worth it?

While I understand the lure of owning/running your own business, everyone cannot do that. Also, running a business takes a lot of time in addition to luck. Not everyone wants to think "network, network, network, business, business" 24/7.

Engineering pays a very good salary and work finds you if you have the skills.

Also, getting an engineering degree is not a guarantor of success, and it takes a large investment of time and money.
And if you are successful, your reward is 60 hour weeks making someone else rich, while you spend your days surrounded by socially inept and unpleasant people.

I'm not sure what you are basing all these claims on, but it's obvious that us engineers here don't recognize ourselves and our professional lives with the picture you are trying to paint.

Let's re-cap your strategy for Home-schooling entrepreneur guy:
Studies on his own the classes that would make up a degree in 1.5 years time while working. He uses this knowledge to start a business.

Put this up against Uni guy:
Studies 3-4 years (depending on field). Develops a network. Gets a degree. Will likely have to get a student loan.

What the Uni guy's path holds is fairly well known. Everything else being equal, there are however several variables for the Entrepreneur guy that you have yet to fill in. How will he have time and opportunity to develop a network when he devotes all his time to hi-intensity studies and staying afloat? How will he be able to get funding/risk capital without anything professionally tangible to back an idea with? What will he have to show for his time to an employer if 2-3 years down the line his business won't get out of the red and he has to get a regular job?

Will I don't disregard your idea there is no doubt that there's a lot of risk involved. You can't just breeze past all the question marks in this venture by insinuating it's the "alpha"-thing to do. Talking in those terms - I'm perfectly willing to take risks with girls, but applying the same logic to far-reaching decisions that might have a major impact on your financial stability? If anything dragging an alpha/beta dimension into this is just evasive rhetoric demanding a leap of faith of religious proportions.

I will give you some advice. Pay attention, because this will make your life better:

Never choose a career just because it gives you "opportunities to meet girls"

Yeah, women don't exactly populate the high paying careers. Sound advice.

There are plenty of workaholic dweebs that are excellent at their job and still can't get a date. We call them beta-providers. Jobs don't matter. Roosh would respond "I'm unemployed and live in my Dad's basement." and still pick up girls.

Everyone knows this thread is an April Fools prank pretending to be Indian Troll.

"Alpha children wear grey. They work much harder than we do, because they're so frightfully clever. I'm awfully glad I'm a Beta, because I don't work so hard. And then we are much better than the Gammas and Deltas. Gammas are stupid. They all wear green, and Delta children wear khaki. Oh no, I don't want to play with Delta children. And Epsilons are still worse. They're too stupid to be able to read or write. Besides they wear black, which is such a beastly color. I'm so glad I'm a Beta."

RE: Is engineering a good career for meeting my kind of girls
I wasted 4 years at uni taking a BA in French, the ratios were usually around 25 girls, 3-5 guys. Sure it was fun and I partied my way through a degree, but in the end, my BA got me a $12/hour job at a call centre and about $15K in student loan debt, I had to go to trade school after that to get a real job and pay off my loans.

As other posters have mentioned, don´t take a degree based on how many women are in the courses, if anything, the more women in your courses, the less likely that you`ll have a high paying job after you graduate. Trust me, four years of school is nothing after you hit the ``real world`` and start your job hunt.

If I could do it again, I probably would take mechanical or petroleum engineering. There`s definitely some pretty good engineering gigs out there, and you`re certainly not limited to just engineering, if you want to move into project management or an MBA, there`s plenty of room for growth.

God damned them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold, we'd fire no guns-shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers!

Hell no I don`t want to work 60 hours a week in the oil fields, if I`m up there with no booze, women or a life, I want to be working at least 84 hours ( 7 12s), but preferably 90-100 (the most I ever did in one week was 126 last October. Its not woth my time to go to a dump like Fort Mac for 60, I can get that in Edmonton.

A degree in Petroleum engineering doesn`t necessarily mean that you´ll be in the field anyway (although a couple of years is likely when you first start out), there´s a lot of nice cushy office jobs in downtown Edmonton and Calgary for those guys. Who knows, maybe I will go back to school in the future, I definitely don`t want to be climbing ladders and piperacks when I`m 45!

Engineering gives you the means to score, basically some free time and enough money to cover logistics and then some. I'm majoring in it so I can work in the oil fields for two or three years, pay my (relatively small) debt, and travel the world as a jerk-off beatnik until I run out of money.

RE: Is engineering a good career for meeting my kind of girls
I am also an engeneer, altrough without a diploma yet, but working in engeneering design. The job is somewhat nerdy and interesting to the degree of your nerdyness - that means girls will find it boring to listen about. But it is not stressful or time-consuming leaving a plenty of time and energy to pursue other interests - in my case game, dancing, weightlifting, foreign languages and solving existential questions. So as an engeneer by proffesion I find it easy to attract women just that I have switch topics soon is she asks about work.

There are almost only men in engenering work. This is actually a good thing as it gives some time to relax from women so they do not become a chore.

Another good aspect is that it allows to stay in touch with your technical side that comes handy in impressing women when some household appliance or car brakes and it is convenient for you too.

In overall this is an average choice in terms of swooping women. Much better than kindergarden teacher or construction worker or a regular office clerk, much worse than a top lawyer or fitness trainer.

When I was a kid, a train engineer allowed me to ride in the cab.

I was in charge of the horns. There were many goats and cows that I had to warn.

That was probably one of my most treasured memories. I can still remember it. Nothing like being in the cab of a powerful train.

RE: Is engineering a good career for meeting my kind of girls
When you make money in North America, the girls will come. It's easier to have money and get girls than to have no money and get girls.

With money you can buy nice threads, have a nice crib, a decent whip and buy good protein (steak, chicken and fowl) to lift weights and get your body right.

With money, you can travel to different places where even as a drooling moron, you will still get your dyck wet more times than you can fashion.
And even a mountain goat that resides long enough in foreign countries will pick up enough cultural nuances to be naturally cool just by reeling off countries that they have been to.

As some of the older posters have mentioned, this is crucial as you get older. This is the foundation that you create for yourself. When one is younger, it doesn't seem like it matters. The type of lizards that you attract and go for, don't appreciate travel nor culture (in North America).
They get wowed by basic shyt such as your own car and a place where you both can fcuk.

Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga is the only culture that has them tickled pink.

But these 8's and 9's that you guys seek will have higher expectations than Jennifer from college. They will be accustomed to higher rollers and you will need to have your game on a higher level in order to tap that.

I don't give a fcuk who you are but the type of girls you will even have access to WILL be limited if you are 38 years old and you are making 16k per annum.

If you have game and you meet them in a club or on the street, LIE to them if your job seems boring. Why should they care what you do? Even if you collect rubbish from the streets, as long as you get fat coin, what should they care?

When you go to a nice restaraunt, when you pay off your car loan, do people sneer because the cash came from so and so job?

As long as the cash is there, what the fcuk do people care?

To quote Athlone, you won't lose women chasing money.

I'm sure some girls would care Moma if you got your money from working with your hands versus a white collar job. Who gives a fuck about those lizards though? Hell, I see girls online who say they'll only talk to guys with a degree. Would they turn down an oil worker who has a $200, 000 loft and new luxury car outside just because of no degree?

Scotian - you make enough to take some time off and go back to school. Do you want to though? Not many careers give you the freedom that you have man. That's the main reason I'm going to stop taking classes (or at least put them on hold). I don't want to be out there when I'm getting up in age either like you said...it would be pretty easy to start something up with all that money though.

From what I understand engineers are somewhat looked down upon in the US whereas in Europe or Asia they make up most of the corporate infrastructure all the way to the executive suite. I have a theory on this but its for another thread.

And speaking of hours, that's a 40h work week. Not a soul crushing 12h-work, 8h-sleep cycle.

Hey,
Where did you get that from. I get a M.S. in Mechanical and Aerospace engineering in week, what do you mean by looked down upon?

In the US there's this prevailing attitude that engineers are bookish, social outcasts. It's actually somewhat perplexing to see.

I can see that... But its generally true thought, compared to other majors. My department is much more, nerdy than others. I think all (STEM) majors are like that. Here I am in the library, and havent slept yet.... but I know that there is a global job market for me, starting in two weeks. Big Grin

I was talking to a cougar on a flight and she told me I don't fit the traditional description of an engineer because I came across as a charming, well-versed, and outgoing person.

Sure, a lot of engineers are pretty introverted, but not every single one is like that.
