Hmmm, let's see. Some of the largest cities make it all but impossible for you to carry a firearm - NYC, Chicago, DC. Several states are 'may issue' rather than 'shall issue'. We had a 10yr assault weapons ban (and the public was totally misled about what constitutes an 'assault weapon'), a permanent assault weapons ban in Massachusetts (thank you Mitt Romney). Confiscation of legally owned guns during aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I could go on. You are obviously not a concealed carry license holder. Go talk to a friend who carries (legally) or owns one of these so-called 'assault rifles' and ask him what he thinks.

I've become increasingly more cynical about race relations in this country as I have grown older and learned more about them. I remember growing up with the hope that my life (and those of others like me) would be considered as valuable as that of any similarly-aged caucasian in this country. For a time, I was even firmly convinced that it already was. Alas, my faith in the ability of blacks and whites within the United States to actually stamp out discrimination in that manner and build a legitimately "post-racial America" (a term I now and forever will consider an oxymoron) has declined significantly. I had a feeling that it had hit rock bottom, though I wasn't sure if it could go lower.

This thread has dropped it a bit further. As I mentioned before, I wasn't sure if that was even possible, so I'd like to thank some of the posters in here for clearing that up.

IMO, Z felt empowered to chase after T because he was strapped. He made the 911 call and should have left it up to the police to follow-up.

Those pictures are definitely not fake. The facial features match up. The picture that's been spread through most news stories doesn't look like a 17 year old to me.

I'm going to take a guess at what happened, Zimmerman confronted the kid, possibly physically, they got in to a fight, and Zimmerman shot him. That is how a lot of people end up in prison for homicide.

We have a black president and a black attorney general. If Zimmerman doesn't go to jail then the whole thing was just a media circus.

I don't think the problem has anything to do with gun laws. The problem is racist and incompetent cops -- and there are a lot of them out there. Most of these guys are one step up from thugs. Gun prohibition isn't going to get rid of racist cops.

The pictures are real, but the Miami New Times has already come out with their report stating that they aren't pictures of Trayvon.

Even if they were, what do they prove?

All these reports that are coming out to implement the blame the victim strategy are ridiculous, and are just classic examples of institutional racism.

What does being suspended from school for non-violent, non-criminal behavior have to do with being a murder victim?

If Trayvon had a past that demonstrated a propensity towards violence, it would be relevant, because then it would be consistent with Zimmerman's account of how he acted towards him.

However, it is the shooter who has a past that includes two domestic violence reports and a physical altercation with the police, but we're wasting time talking about incidents regarding weed and graffiti?

That's just insulting our intelligence.

"Hispanic scholarship fund" and "Hispanic heritage month"


Pretty interesting that a non-existent racial group gets its own scholarships and heritage months.
