This entire post is theoretical. It's contents may or may not be true. Should you attempt this hypothetical situation and get yourself into legal trouble you only have yourself to blame for listening to my hypothetical advice.

I've only just found out this tip. An underage friend may or may not have used it a couple weeks in a row to go to bars in the city.

I'm not sure how it works in other cities, but where I live bouncers don't arrive at bars till between 9 to 10. So hypothetically you could go to a popular bar (so it will be busy earlier than most bars) from 6 or so until the bouncers start showing up and checking people's ID's. Hypothetically you shouldn't run into any problems unless you go up to the bar itself to hypothetically order a drink and the bartender gets suspicious, so if you want to get drinks have an older friend buy them for you.

Remember, the first rule of being a venue that you may or may not be legally allowed to enter is that you do not tell anybody inside that you may or may not be of legal age.

Now a couple disclaimers, the local Lair in my city has a regular meet up on Thursday nights, so both times he hypothetically has done it, it was on Thursdays evenings and he was with 2-3 older guys each time.
Also, my friend can be described as a very young looking man of Ethiopian descent. There is no way he could pass for being of legal age with a legitimate ID.

Suffice to say, the two of us HYPOTHETICALY will be going at this over the next few weeks, especially because I have a term break coming up.

The secrets from my experience (in Australia over the last 10 year):
Good ID's - don't go fake, instead get a friend or family member who looks like you and isn't far off in age (if your 17 and your card is for a 25 year old it wont fly). Get them to give you there card and pay the money to have theirs replaced. It should go without saying, using that card when you go out with them is a risky move.
Your best bet is average bars and clubs eager for any business and willing to take the risk on being fined if they are busted by police for serving minors. Ask around, there is always a bunch of bars and a club or two in each city with no standards (though the clubs in particular rarely last more than a year or two).
Also head out of the city, suburban and country venues are a lot more relaxed.
As you mentioned have older friends and walk in as a group. Last year we were sneaking 2 underage girls and a guy into a club, they had shit ID's and despite best efforts one of the girls and guy got made by bouncers. I picked the bouncer who seemed to be calling the shots, had a calm word saying 'hey there is 12 of us here - the place is dead, were going to have a great night, drop plenty of cash and not cause any problems for you. Are you sure your boss would want you to send us and all that money away? Because we aren't leaving our two friends." He let us in, we delivered as promised, spent money, did not get sloppy drunk or cause any other problems.
Even better than having older friends, bring hot girls with you. Hot girls are good for business - although being turned away at the door can be a mood killer for the girls.
Be friendly and confident with bouncers - your instinct sneaking in is to clam up, not say a word, avoid eye contact, etc. Do the opposite. Look them in the eye, say hi, if they are chatty ask how there night is going. When they start checking your ID, say something dumb or a bit funny to distract them ("shit bit loud in there, glad I left my hearing aid at home" / "whats the deal with you guys not drinking on the job - must suck having to deal with drunk wankers all the time while sober?"). Be polite, especially on the way out. Next time you go back, might be the same guy on the door, he may just remember you and let you slide straight in.

Admittedly I'm 26 now, 18 is the drinking age here in Australia and I started sneaking in at 16, however I have snuck quite a few underagers in over the years so the skills aren't entirely rusty. Not sure how these tips will translate to America or elsewhere, but I'm sure the principals are the same.

This was a pretty common tactic when I was in college. Go there for a late dinner and stay in there. Dont try to order drinks at dinner or you might get carded by the waitress. Keep an eye on the bouncers and if they start checking IDs when they show up, then bounce to the bathroom for a nice long deucer.

did this one last night, rolled up to this bar there was only the one dude at the door and I smiled walked straight past. he asked me if i was with the dj haha (DJ was my friend)
