Wow. It's sad that airfare has jumped up so much that is considered a bargain. In 2004, I flew from NY to London for 280 USD round trip using Hotwire.

I always see great deals on Spirit Airlines, but I have never flown with them.

Spirit is a step above Southwest, but a step below the major carriers

Do always remember that they charge for BOTH checked bag and carry-on

Tip:

I pre-paid online once for my carry-on backpack

When I got to the airport to check in, I noticed my backpack was able to fit in the bag size-check thingy and did not require the purchase so I wasted the $ (x2, round trip I believe)

Not sure if its still the same limits today, but do check your bag dimensions vs/ their limits before pre-paying carry-on (which is cheaper than paying at check in)

Also if you plan to use Spirit twice or more a year, their $9 club might be worth buying

Maxing out airline programs and then dropping them is working well for me. Some cards give 5x points points for some categories and 2X for everything else. And you can cancel after a few months without penalty.

One website I use a lot is http://adioso.com
The site is based in Australia (like me) and only in Beta but if your looking at flying around Australia and Asia (particularly SE Asia) it does an awesome job, particularly searching discount airlines that many of the big aggregators miss like AirAsia, Jetstar, etc.
They are adding more airlines and eventually I think it will be of more use to Americans and Euros. It has some powerful search options which set it apart and is incredibly

For booking hotels in Australia http://wotif.com is your best option. Occasionally you will find better prices elsewhere but it dominates regardless with ease of use, number of hotels and consistent low prices. It is however pretty hopeless for finding backpackers, look at a major backpacking destination like Cairns and they only list a couple of places and rates are usually same as the official websites.

BMI often has a sale on with flights heading out of London Heathrow to some interesting locations such as Yerevan,Tiblisi,Bishkek,Tehran etc. Due to the problems in Syria they are selling return flights to Damascus stupidly cheap. Good way to get to the Middle East. I flew with them to Bishkek when their sale was on for £325 return which is epicly cheap for a return to Central Asia from LHR.

Best travel bargain out there still has to be Ryan Air though. I flew from UK to Bratslava a while back for under £20, it cost me more to get to the airport then the flight. They have flights to the Baltics for similar prices making it the cheapest way to get to Russia when combined with a connecting train/bus.

Skyscanner is always my first port of call when checking flight prices. Planning a week in Russia for early July and am finding decent deals from London to Abakan and Novokuznetsk in South Siberia with Aeroflot/S7. Thinking of taking advantage for some Tannu Tuva escapades.

Another thing that might help people is when you find out that your flight has a layover somewhere.
instead of just getting the ticket...do two separate searches between the cities.
Example..I wanna fly from Hamburg to Atlanta. but the layovers stop in places like london or NYC

If book an individually ticket from Hamburg to NYC and then buy another ticket from NYC to ATL it came out to be almost 400 dollars cheaper.

Fly into a Airline hub and its always cheaper than flying to random airports.

Wikipedia the airport and find a list of the airlines that use that airport.
Those airlines are usually gonna have cheaper tickets
