LORAIN, Ohio — Marriage has lost its luster in Lorain, Ohio.


Sixty-three percent of all births to women under 30 in Lorain County occur outside marriage, according to Child Trends, a research center in Washington. That figure has risen by more than two-thirds over the past two decades, and now surpasses the national figure of 53 percent.

The change has transformed life in Lorain, a ragged industrial town on Lake Erie. Churches perform fewer weddings. Applications for marriage licenses are down by a third. Just a tenth of the students at the local community college are married, but its campus has a bustling day care center.

The New York Times interviewed several dozen people in Lorain about marriage here. What follows are their stories.

Young parents spoke of an economy that was fundamentally different from in their parents’ time, and that required more than a high school education for fathers to be stable breadwinners. They talked of how little they trusted each other to be reliable mates, and of how the government safety net encourages poor parents to stay single.

Tony Cruz, a father of two, has felt the effects of Lorain’s economic decline first hand. His father, a high school graduate, worked at a steel plant and provided middle-class trappings like a house and a car for his family. Mr. Cruz, 31, with the same level of education, has done mostly seasonal work in construction and repair, as factory jobs, far fewer than in his father’s day, have been hard to come by.

Now unemployed, he is taking a class at Lorain County Community College, whose main campus is in nearby Elyria. Mr. Cruz, who has never married, got custody of his children after their mother developed a drug habit. He spends his days driving them to school and his girlfriend — who is not their mother — to her job at a flower shop.

“You feel really low when you can’t help your family out,” Mr. Cruz said. He said he would not consider working in a fast food restaurant or a store because the wages are much lower than in construction.

Joblessness and run-ins with the law are so prevalent among young men in Lorain that many women interviewed said they had given up on finding a suitable mate. Angel Ives, a nursing student at the community college, said she did not want to bring another man into her family after her daughter’s father, a groundskeeper for sports fields, was jailed on assault charges. Ms. Ives, 32, works in a nursing home while attending college, and said she was too tired to date. She jokes that her idea of a perfect suitor is someone who will come to her house to baby-sit while she naps.

“A baby makes a woman grow up, but not a man,” she said. “I can’t imagine ever depending on a man. I don’t trust them.”

Older residents blamed the decline in marriage on government aid. Mary Grasso, a retired sweet shop owner, said men had stopped taking responsibility for their children because the state had stepped in with safety net programs. Ms. Grasso, 70, experienced the decline in weddings directly: Wedding cake orders fell by half during the 30-plus years she was in business.

“It’s too easy for them,” she said of young people. “There are no restrictions anymore. And we are taking care of all of these children.”

Many women described a lifestyle of dating in which relationships sometimes resulted in children, but less often in fathers deeply involved in their families. Judge David Basinski of Lorain County Domestic Relations Court, in Elyria, said he recently had a case in which a man who had nine children by six women owed $55,000 in back child support. Child support cases have become so common among unmarried parents that the court now gives seminars on parental responsibilities.

“For a long time I believed it was happening among people who didn’t have that much money,” he said of the trend toward births outside marriage. “But now we are moving to a much broader category.”

Several married people who were interviewed said they had wed later in life, often after having children. Pamela Noble-Garner, a nursing home worker who is taking stenography classes at the community college, said she married for the first time at age 37, years after having two children by two men. Her husband, a prison guard, is involved in the lives of his own previous children, a quality that drew her to him. Ms. Noble-Garner, who grew up as one of six siblings in a household run by a single mother, said her father was rarely in her life, an absence she regrets

“We can all stick our chests out and say, ‘We don’t need no man to raise our babies,’ ” Ms. Noble-Garner said. “I would honestly tell them, ‘Honey, yes you do. You might not need him financially, but your baby needs a father.’ ”

The tone of this article is astonishing. Apparently all men are unemployed criminals, and unworthy of overweight single mothers.

What's even more noteworthy is that the NYTimes is one of the only (relatively) serious news sources left in American media and they're printing garbage like this.

You guys are completely missing the great news of this article.

A lot of us travel to third world countries to bang women there because of our higher status as Americans. Well CONGRATULATIONS! The US just carved a third world country WITHIN America.

Let me illustrate my point. With the rate of unemployment and low wage jobs, there is a HUGE section of the male population that are making under $20K, or even under $16K. So what happens when this chick runs into even a moderately successful guy? If this chick, who is surrounded by uneducated dudes making $16K a year at a minimum wage job (when they are not unemployed) and runs into a college guy pulling as little as $60K, that dude jumps to the top of the food chain. That "I don't need a man" bullshit will fly right out of the fucking window, and she will be EXTREMELY open to Mr. $60K's advances. In fact, don't be surprised if she tries to run game on HIM. Making 4 times as much money as most of the dudes a chick encounters is one hell of a DHV.

How do I know this? Because this EXACT SAME PHENOMENA has been going on in the African-American community for over 30 FUCKING YEARS. I exploit this RIGHT NOW with chicks in poorer communities. Not all of them pick up on success, some are just stupid (it explains why they spread their legs for a convicted felon), but a significant number of them do respond EXTREMELY POSITIVELY to even the most basic game from a successful guy.

All you have to do is make a little bit of small talk with them and show a little interest in their lives. Don't tell them what you do until they ask (they will ALWAYS ask fairly soon). But when he pulls some of these chicks out of these lower income communities in the South Suburbs/Northwest Indiana and they see the view of downtown Chicago from his condo at night the panties drop almost instantly. He told me that one chick actually started crying when she saw the view.

As long as you aren't condescending to the women (displaying a "I'm better than you because I have money, you are trash" attitude) and emphasize that they are different from the other girls in their neighborhood (they all secretly hope that this is true) you've got them. Act like you see their potential and they will happily let you see their pussy.

For any form members on the wrong side of the great American income/education divide GET ON THE BALL. This forum is filled with guys that are willing to help a brother out with advice and info regarding school and career choices. You don't have to make $100K to run this kind of game on these chicks, but minimum wage ain't going to cut it. Make no mistake, the income/education divide, as well as the social consequences stemming from it, will only get worse.

Again, interesting, but completely outside of my control. We could debate whether the turns of events is a good thing or bad thing, we could debate whether the US will slip into Latin American style levels of poverty and its effect on crime, we could debate whether the root of the problem is Feminism, the rise of the welfare state, corporate greed, or technology and globalization (my personal choice). But at the end of the day, our debates are COMPLETELY FUCKING IRRELEVANT. NOTHING we post on this forum will have any effect on the future of the global economy or whether the US becomes a third world country.

Too much time is spent by individuals complaining about how things SHOULD be, instead of adapting and profiting from HOW THINGS ARE. The black community hasn't been destroyed. It has just been split with an ax into two almost COMPLETELY separate groups that have increasing LITTLE contact with each other. On one end, you have poor folks without an education dealing with large amounts of poverty and crime. On the other end you have folks who are educated that are actually doing pretty well for themselves. In fact, income inequality WITHIN the African American community is worse than the US as a whole.

I would have much preferred that this had not occurred and that economic growth within the African American community had been more holistic and broad reaching over the past 50-60 years since the end of segregation/Jim Crow. Maybe I'm the one that is wrong, but I didn't think that this was a "I hate all American women" forum. While I love my foreign women, I still get a fair share of pussy that is made in the good ole' U.S. of A.

Thank you. Your post reminded me that I was falling into the very same trap that I railed against in my post above. I was all set to write a post concerning whether it was feminism or birth control that led to sluttier women, and/or did we need feminism to break the super strong religion inspired sexual repression in this country, until I realized something. IT DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER. Feminism, good thing, bad thing? Who gives a fuck? It's here, ADAPT TO IT.

That's what players do. We adapt. For some brothers, adapting means going to different countries to game the women there. For other brothers adapting means gaming a different segment of the population that is more receptive to their style. Still others switch their game up to adjust to the women around them. Then there are those that do a combination of all of the above.

So, at the end of the day, here is the situation. We have growing income inequality and lack of jobs for the lower classes creating situations where women are rejecting the men in their own social class at an astonishingly high rate. Essentially, because their economic opportunities are dwindling, the social status of men in this class IS DROPPING.

Yet we know, no matter how much they say "I don't need a man", the genetically encoded hypergamous nature of women compels them to respond positively to men of higher status. The higher the status, the more they are compelled to respond. The DROP in status of lower income men has effectively RAISED the status (and subsequently the value) of middle and upper income men.

So, the real issue isn't how devastating this is (which we have ZERO control over), but rather, how do we take advantage of this situation?

Without significant changes in the alimony structure, as well as solid job opportunities for the lower class? Nope. Not for the majority of folks. Of course you will still have some people getting married. The marriage rates for upper income people are not dropping nearly as quickly, and there is still a large Ultra religious portion of our population who will continue to get married.

However, I fully expect to see a future where 85%+ of children are born out of wedlock, and the few marriages that do happen last an average of 5 years or less. The article in the OP explains all of the problems with marriage in the lower end. Here is the most recent "fucked up marriage" story that I heard about. A dude in California marries this reformed druggie who has now become ultra religious (first mistake). After over 10 years of marriage she gets back on drugs and starts physically abusing him. Dumbass doesn't leave her until she finally beats him IN FRONT OF THEIR SONS (I can't even imagine watching my dad get his ass beat by my mom).

Guy finally leaves and moves into the basement of the police station he works at (yeah, HE IS A COP). The woman tries to hire one of the bikers that she gets high with to kill her husband for his life insurance money. The biker warns the cop about his wife. They set up a sting, she gets arrested and convicted, but only gets TWO FUCKING YEARS. While she is in jail, they finalize the divorce.

And the fucked up part is...
She was awarded half of his assets INCLUDING his pension as the divorce settlement.

The guy got so fucking pissed that he went to his state senator and EVENTUALLY they got the law changed, but not before he handed over $70K to the woman who tried to murder him.

I don't think it's a big deal that marriage will die. People will have kids and raise families without marriage just fine.
