How much is
- renting a house
- renting a cool apartment
- best place to live to be near the action (riverside/oltorf/woodland/south congress/south lamar was fine for me. I then moved North past Burnet and hated life.)

- FIOS easily available?

thanks in advance,
WIA

Yeah best place to live is South congress or South lamar they are upcoming and if you are willing to buy could make a shit load of money. You can find a lot of cool small houses behind either one there are also tons of new apartments because the market is booming in those neighborhoods. Price wise I'm not a 100% sure because I have never rented a place but I would just check craigslist for a general idea. I would say Time warner cable is the fastest and easiest unless you have a reason to be on FIOS don't mess with it.

lol if you live on south congress you better be balling out of your ass. i've never talked numbers with my friend, but he's living on south congress right now in a 1 br and his rent is around 1200+ i think.

when i was at UT i roomed with 4 of my friends on north campus. paid around 800 give or take. also had to pay for parking and electricity. austin isn't a place to be dead broke.

Yeah but you get to be in the center of the action. All of the new bars and restaurants are on South Congress or South Lamar.

oh yeah, not denying that. south congress is definitely ideal if you want to be living in austin... west campus MAYBE if you're into sorority chicks which i kind of am. but i know some dudes on this site are a bit older and wouldn't fit into that crowd.

all in all i would say north campus is the best bang for your buck honestly. you're still in proximity to all of the action but you're not paying south congress prices.

Most expensive spot in Texas thanks to out of staters. I'm still trying to figure out how all these "broke" hipsters and "struggling artists" even make it there.

^parents.

i rarely met anyone up there who came from a family with little means or even a working blue collar family.

there's definitely a lot of snobbery in austin for texas standards. a lot of kids i knew didn't get into UT cause of merit, i've met more than a handful of kids who got in because of legacy, or they came from a really wealthy family from houston (river oaks, ha) or dallas.

Also west austin is a good place to live if you want a bigger house but easy access to downtown and N lamar. I lived there and could walk to where the huge whole foods is in 10 min.

RE: Anybody currently living in Austin?
nah i have some roommates ha.

but yeah, definitely got very lucky to say the least. i know some people who signed leases in early november, live further away from campus, and have to share bathrooms and they still pay just about as much as i do.
