Has anyone seen this show? It's about a family of 7 named the Browns who live off the grid in Alaska. They build their own cabins, hunt for their own food, build their own bush inventions, and do odd jobs to make ends meets. In the latest season, they build their own wind generator to provide electricity for their island. The show is almost like a modern day version of Robinson-Crusoe. Although, there is some reports that say that the show is manufactured.

I knew that shit was fake the second I saw the trailer for when it was brand new. I was watching Mountain Men at the time, thought about how those guys looked, took another look at them and thought to myself, bullshit.

I spent a season working in SE Alaska a few years back I remember talking about this show. A lot of the locals hated these guys. They make real Alaskans look bad. The ones that actually enjoyed the shit considered it entertainment and nothing more. There were a surprising amount of trashy local kids who felt some sort of weird pride about the area being featured on tv, but still I got the impression the Browns weren't very well liked.

Everyone was well aware it was fake too. I'm pretty sure the family actually owns a house just outside of downtown Ketchikan. I used to see some of these little fuckers shopping at Safeway every once and while. So much for off the grid.

Watching that video did nothing to convince me that the Brown's lifestyle is fake. Of course TV shows exaggerate certain aspects of the family but that video was silly and proved nothing.

Of course its fake.

The older brother is an alcoholic who walks to town to drink. The camera angles make it seem like they are in the wilderness, but they are walking distance to the bars.

Still, the show is commendable for portraying in a positive way a group of people with tremendous family love for each other and with a non-mainstream culture view on life. They are considerable anti-materialistic, don't watch TV, etc.

On the other hand, they are a bit wierd and not the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Alaskan state troopers was probably the craziest shit I have ever seen on TV. It had deranged arctic crack heads, bears on the lose wreaking havoc, the elements. Shit was 100% real and crazy as fuck.
